Pretty sure you're all fully aware of the heat warnings. It's scorching in the UK today and our dogs and us aren't used to it, so please take precautions.🌞🌞
Cool mats
Shelter
Water
Early/late walks
Suncream on white/pink bits (especially dilute colours)
Frozzies
Fans at dach height.
And look after yourselves too.
I refuse to be stuck inside again on the laptop like I was last year. I planned for this year for once!
I popped the frame from a gazebo up in the corner of the patio area, trained mum's rose to climb over it.....got attacked by 2000 thorns, roses are savage! 🌹🥀🩹But now we have a beautiful natural shelter. I can crack on with my thesis, Dynamic Dog assessments and behavioural plans in the warmth whilst making sure the dogs are kept cool.
Try to enjoy some air if you work from home, its easy to forget to enjoy these moments when you are home more. 🕊☮️
I even plug the fan in so we can enjoy the air without over heating. 🥵😎
Here's a vid of mine yesterday whilst I was writing up reports.
Have a lovely weekend everyone.

My week went a little bit like this:😵💫
Stupidly took Kieron to a new bike park last Friday.🚴♂️💨
In the middle of GCSE's.📚
Yep you guessed it. He crashed. 🚴♂️💥
He has no recollection of how.
Several hours on several days spent in A&E.
Fractured collar bone (yup, his writing arm) and fractured eye socket.🤕 (Yes, he was wearing a full face helmet....don't start!)
Kieron is rendered useless......but aside from being exceptionally irritating, he's fine.
My parents are away so am looking after their fluffy mob......and now down a helper!
So, I'm sorting my dogs out, their dogs out, running braticus back and forth to school for exams, cutting up his food like he's 2 years old again, and even putting on his socks!
Obviously I'm working too.🐔😵💫💨🤯
And then guilt kicks in. 😬 🥺😓 🙏
The dogs aren't getting enough interactive time with me like normal.🐶🐕🦴🐾🎾
🐶💙🐾😊Thankfully they are very patient and are happy to just have me around, but is that enough?
I've spoken to a few people recently who feel the same, or maybe didn't realise that they were just co-existing with their dogs. And so, this blog was born....in the time where I haven't got much freely available because Braticus just rolled out of his pit!
Huge thanks to my Barking Course grads for contributing with their awesome pictures! You guys rock.
Back to being a super slave....catch you all later!
Today's world is just so busy! I barely get a chance to sit down sometimes, and when I do I'm exhausted! So how do we fit in time for our dogs?We often take for granted that they will just fit into our schedules, and we easily prioritise everyone else while our dog’s needs slip down the list. This...

When it's dark and gloomy, and wet and cold its hard to see beyond that.
But remember we all need those darker days to help us grow. We'd not appreciate the good without the bad
Today the sky's are dark, its cold and wet. Im feeling a bit meh as I just want to enjoy the sun.
But.... without the rain, i'd never get to enjoy the beauty it brings.
I can't take the credit for the roses, they're the rewards of my mums hard work.
See beyond....and grow.

I'm seeing quite a number of posts where people are getting bitten by their pooches - often hand and face bites which suggests it's happening when they are handled or when they are crowded.
Often in situations like this chronic pain (long term, maybe ongoing aches rather than ouch i stepped on lego type pain) is often a factor. Many people will disregard this as they were playing fetch earlier or they don't limp. Dachshunds are very stoic, and as hunters do have a high tolerance of pain (unless they step on baby nettles), they often show their discomfort through being grumpy or moody, or unpredictable.
If this goes on for a long time it is likely to become a learned behaviour so it is important to address it asap!
In the first instance you should discuss things with your vets. However remember vets only get to see them for a short period of time in a stressful environment where they are likely to be very tense - meaning they won't show discomfort. Vets also spend very little time of their very intense degree exploring behaviour unless they do additional courses and may not be aware of the research.
I wrote this blog a while ago, I hope it helps:
It certainly can, and at the least it can exacerbate them! Before we start, I want to say a HUGE thank you to those who have shared videos and pictures for this blog. I really hope seeing things in action helps you understand what to look for. And yea, its a long one.....but I hope its not boring and...

Feeling very reflective at the minute and thinking about all the dogs I've shared my heart with. All have been a key part in shaping me into who I am today.
Here's a vid of some of my favourite pics. Some don't appear, showing my age, but no phones back then.
Truly blessed to have experienced so much love.
I hope you don't mind me sharing.

Kami update.
In the world of dogs its not much.
Only ivdd pawrents will really understand how huge this is.
In the world of Kami, this is significant. Her neuro issues already affect her balance, and she needs 4 paws to stand on. She'd never adapt to wheels. (She has a congenital brain abnormality where 1/3 of her brain has not developed).
However every tiny step (literally) gives us time to get her there.
It is also a HUGE reminder to all of us to celebrate the steps towards progress rather than the daunting overall goal.
So whether you are learning a new skill, or like Kami, relearning an old one (standing & walking), celebrate each and every attempt at progress.
A few weeks ago she was in a lot of pain and couldn't move.
She's had to learn again how to sit upright with only 2 legs.
Had to learn how to eat from a bowl (again)
She's now incredibly mobile butt shuffling.
And started becoming increasingly continent again.
Deep pain sensation has returned.
Her tail wag has also returned.
And, multiple times a day, we practice standing.
Just standing.....BUT.
Today, she can hold her weight with just support for balance, and is trying very hard to take steps.🥳🥳🥂
That's a win!
Celebrate with me and keep the ❤️& 🙏 coming her way (please).
Little vid of small miracles.
Thank you all for your love and support. I hope this post gives other warrior mums hope.
(Sorry, Indie keeps photostrutting to show how its done!)

What do we do?
Firstly, who am I? I am currently a dachshund servant to 9 dachshunds, 1 doberman and a crossbreed.
Seriously, a very brief outline - I grew up with a mini long, then 2 mini smooths. I rebelled and took on several border collies and a great dane. At 19 I took my unruly collies to training classes and found my passion and love for training and behaviour. I studied various trainers, attended various courses until I found Pet Dog Training Instructors who really embraced who I am as a trainer, focusing on our bond and our relationships with our dogs in addition to being a good instructor. Having gained my advanced award with them and my diploma in Canine training and behaviour management with Harper Adams University I am proud to be a tutor on their yearly instructors course and a professional member of the organisation.
Eventually I came back to my beloved breed, they are in my blood after all, even my grandfather had them. I was interested in showing and searched for the right dachshund and was very lucky in finding the perfect dog for me. A beautiful standard smooth, my princess. From here I eventually bred my own beautiful litter and have several generations. I am very proud of my dogs and of their achievements. However, mostly, we all enjoying exploring the Norfolk countryside and snuggling on the sofa. I have taken them tracking, done scent work, fun agility and lots of fun training. I am not competitive by nature, I just enjoy spending time with my pups.
So why did I set up Perfectly Polite Dachshunds?
Having watched social media dachshund forums for some time and been an active contributor and admin on several of the groups I noticed there were common issues being raised across the country in relation to our lovely breed. As a dog trainer, dachshund breeder and owner of several of this wonderful yet stubborn breed I felt I was in an incredible position to help so many of these people face to face. How wonderful would it be to arrange bespoke workshops across the country addressing the real problem behaviours people are having and offering techniques and training which will genuinely help people and their dachshunds? They are a specialist breed after all! To put my love for training and behaviour and my love and passion for dachshunds together - dream come true!
After talking to some members of the Dachshund Breed Council I am thrilled to say I have their support in running these workshops along with Dachshund Health UK and Pet Dog Training instructors (PDTI). The workshops will run at various locations around the country and cover a range of issues including barking, socialising, recalls, on lead issues, scavenging and more.
What else??
I am thrilled to add I am now working with The Red Foundation Emergency Dachshund Rescue as their behaviour advisor. I admire the work they do, it isn’t easy and they do fantastic work. It is wonderful to be able to help so many dogs either stay in their homes or help them in their new homes.
I am always studying to ensure I am the best I can possibly be for our wonderful breed, I am mid-way through a law degree with the intention to focus on canine law once it is completed. I am also midway through another diploma in Applied behaviour. The journey just doesn’t stop! Covid-19 put a halt to my plans, however I am awaiting assessment as a Kennel Club Accredited Instructor which will be carried out at some point after restrictions have been lifted. I am also a Dog Training College Approved Instructor.
I hope this sums up my plans and gives you a bit of background into who I am. If you would like to arrange a workshop or 121 in your area, please contact me. Otherwise, watch the page for updates. Exciting times ahead. I am now also running 121’s in different areas, some are on a fixed date, however some can be arranged at any time depending on location. Events and 121 days will be listed on events and on www.bookwhen.com/perfectly-polite-dachshunds.
I do want to say a huge thank you to the team of people that have helped me put everything together to ensure this meets peoples needs. Their support is invaluable and I am very privileged to have them on board. My journey is constantly evolving and I am always learning. Its a wonderful experience and I am truly grateful to those involved. A very humble thank you.
