I am a WCVM graduate and this is a very similar situation in the US other than the subsidized education. The US has far more veterinary schools and far more graduates but each graduate also has a lot more debt. Many US veterinarians I know will retire with student debt.

The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association estimates that 30 per cent of Canadian veterinarians and 50 per cent of veterinary technicians are in the advanced stages of burnout.

A good read. My heart drops every time I see a post asking if anyone knows of a cheap vet. The last paragraph sums it up perfectly.

They give their all to our pets, despite mental health struggles in the the field. But vets get shockingly little in return.

Horse tests positive for rabies in Ravalli county... this is big stuff, follks..... here is the release:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
September 10, 2021
CONTACT:
Dr. Anna Forseth, MT Dept. of Livestock, (406) 444-2939, [email protected]
Dr. Tahnee Szymanski, MT Dept. of Livestock, (406) 444-5214, [email protected]
Horse Tests Positive for Rabies in Ravalli County
Helena, Mont. – On Wednesday, September 8th, the Montana Department of Livestock (MDOL)
received confirmation that a horse in Ravalli County was diagnosed with rabies. This is the 12th
case of rabies in the state in 2021, and the fifth in a terrestrial (non-bat) species. As a result,
Ravalli County has been placed under a 60-day quarantine. The purpose of the quarantine is to
reduce the risk of further disease spread in the county if there are other exposed animals that
have not been identified.
The 60-day county quarantine applies to dogs, cats and ferrets in Ravalli County that are not
currently vaccinated for rabies (MCA Title 81, Chapters 2 and 20). The quarantine is in effect
from Wednesday, September 8th, to Sunday, October 31st. Animals past-due for a rabies
booster, animals that are not 28 days past their first rabies vaccine, and animalsthat have never
been vaccinated are subject to the quarantine.
As a result of the diagnosis, four individuals are seeking post exposure rabies treatment and 15
horses are being monitored for potential exposure. Rabies is a fatal viral disease that is spread
through the saliva of an infected animal. The virus can infect any mammal, including people.
However, it is virtually 100% preventable in domestic animals through the administration of
the rabies vaccine.
“While rabies diagnoses involving horses are not common in Montana, this case is a reminder
that they can occur, especially in unvaccinated animals”, says Dr. Anna Forseth with the
Department of Livestock. “The rabies vaccine is a core vaccine for horses, as defined by the
American Association of Equine Practitioners. Horse owners should work with their
veterinarians to ensure their animals are appropriately vaccinated.”
To protect yourself, your family, and pets against rabies:
• Consider vaccinating horses and high value livestock.
• Keep all animals up to date on rabies vaccination.
• Keep garbage in tight containers to avoid attracting animals such as skunks, raccoons, and
foxes.
• Avoid night animals, like raccoons and bats, that are active during the day.
• Stay away from domestic animals that act aggressive and wild animals that seem
unafraid.
• Contact your local animal control agency if you see an animal behaving suspiciously.
• Contact your veterinarian if any of your animals are behaving abnormally. Animals can
present with a variety of clinical signs, ranging from lethargy to aggression.
If you or someone you know is bitten by an animal, wash the wound immediately with soap and
water, consult a doctor right away, and call your local public health department to report the
bite.
The mission of the Montana Department of Livestock is to control and eradicate animal
diseases, prevent the transmission of animal diseases to humans, and to protect the livestock
industry from theft and predatory animals. For more information on the MDOL, visit

This is pretty special!

Sprinkles’ homeless owner, who had been living in her car with the 6-year-old cat, reluctantly signed Sprinkles over to Anne Arundel County Animal Care & Control on March 6, saying she didn’t feel life in a car was fair to the cat.

To say Sprinkles was unhappy at the shelter is a huge understatement. Her behavior was so fractious that staff did not feel safe handling her, let alone allowing potential adopters to meet her. After several days they reached out to her owner, gently telling her that Sprinkles might not adoptable and might have to be humanely euthanized unless she had some alternative place to take her.

“As hard as this is, I don’t have anywhere else for her to go,” said the woman, who was working even while living in her car. “The shelter was a last resort. I am so sorry.” She asked if she could come say goodbye before Sprinkles was euthanized.

Staff responded that they had been able to sedate Sprinkles and move her to a quieter, larger cage and would give her more time to relax. She later was moved to a staff person’s relatively quiet office, where Sprinkles spent most of her time high on a shelf glowering at anyone who came into the room (although she did come down occasionally to accept bits of cheese). But then she stopped eating entirely, never a good sign in a cat. Staff needed to medicate her, but it was going to be very traumatic for Sprinkles, who still was all but untouchable. Staff debated if it was time to release Sprinkles from her unrelenting anxiety and stress. They reached out again to her owner, who came to the shelter Friday.

Now, most of the shelter’s staff members have many, many years of experience and have watched countless animals being reunited with their owners. But they were uniformly agog when they witnessed Sprinkles’ amazing turnaround and poignant reaction to seeing her mistress again, which is summarized in the photo below of the two of them on Friday.

And there was a ray of hope: Sprinkles’ owner now was living in a friend’s basement. She said she would ask if perhaps Sprinkles could please stay there, too, and would let the shelter staff know the answer.

The friend said yes. Sprinkles left the shelter today with her owner and all the supplies she arrived with, plus more piled on by shelter staff. And Sprinkles’ fees for her stay at the shelter? A staff member dug into her own pocket to pay those.

May you have a great and long life together with your beloved owner, Sprinkles.

Just finished a light but interesting and relevant webinar on Derm versus Behavioral issues in dogs and cats. Thanks to Ceva Animal Health and Sport (for keeping my lap warm). If your dog hates his paws touched, Google “cooperative care”. The behaviorist says there are a bunch of excellent videos there for you! Any behavioral modifications always take time so always be patient with your pets!

First day back in a busy clinic with a full team... shelter girl came in with a hugely distended abdomen and not eating for 24 hours. Ultrasound showed a very populated abdomen... while I’m not doing surgery these few days in Deer Lodge where I’m providing relief coverage, I was part of the rescussi-pup team. 6/7 pups survived! Mamma is doing well.
