I'm part of this dressage discussion group on facebook. I found it a few months ago and joined because my goal with Spike is to start dressage and I thought I could learn something from the members.
Turns out the only thing I learnt is how incredibly judgemental people can be.
This morning members in the group were "discussing" how poorly an Olympic level rider was riding based off of a photograph.
Don't get me wrong, I think that discussion about riding skill and technique (both good and bad) is an excellent learning opportunity, but I don't think using a photo as the basis for that discussion is fair.
This person is obviously a good rider. They competed at the Olympics. To judge their skill based off of the worst photo one could find on the internet is in poor taste.
No one is 100% perfect all of the time. The very premise of dressage is to test our skill to see how close to perfect we can be. But the truth is everyone makes mistakes, because were humans not robots.
This kind of behaviour, this readiness and even eagerness to point out someone's flaws, doesn't help anyone grow as a rider.
It certainly didn't teach me anything. It just made me realise how judgemental this world is and made me wonder if it's even something I want to be a part of.
Ps. Here are my snapshot, second, in time photos. Together, maybe, they tell a story but separately, well I'm sure you could come up with 1001 different explanations.
