The second Saturday of every month is a special one at the sanctuary, as we welcome our Future Compassionate Leaders in partnership with Working together with this incredible program fills us with joy and hope for a kinder tomorrow.

Today, our students:
🩺 Learned about chicken anatomy and participated in health checks with caregiver Matt.

🌱 Explored the concept of humane washing, the practice of sharing false or misleading treatment of farmed animals, and spent meaningful time with their animal partners.

🍽 Took part in a fun blind taste test of vegan chicken nuggets and enjoyed a beautiful garden salad together!

A huge thank you to our lead LEAP instructor, Amanda, for creating such an engaging and meaningful learning space. Through hands-on experiences and thoughtful discussions, we’re elevating conversations that truly matter. 🙏

These young leaders inspire us every day to dream of a more compassionate future.

Thank you for all the kind words for Duke. He was a special boy who lived a long and beautiful life surrounded in love and safety. A life we wish for all animals, regardless of species. 🙏

I also want to thank those who have reached out with worry regarding the fires in LA County. Thank you. We are 2 hours away from LA and very safe. We did experience insanely strong winds a couple of days ago, which required a bit of clean, but that's it. Thank goodness.

We continue to lift up everyone who has been affected by the fires. It's hard to wrap our heads around the devistation and our hearts break for all the animals, both wild and domestic.

Thank you for your kindness. We appreciate you all very much.

How cute are twins, Oak and Amber? One of the very special things about sanctuary is the ability to keep families together forever 💛

Yesterday, we said goodbye to the OG Ranch pup, Duke, after a long and joyful life lived. At 14 years, he was ready to rest and join his heavenly pack and run free again.

He had lost his vision and most of his hearing, but you could still find him every evening watching over his herd before heading inside the house to his warm bed.

Each afternoon, he would make his way down the porch and take his place in front of the gate.

Before kindness found him Duke was a street dog in Mexico. He was hit and drug by a car, and that is what saved his life. We welcomed him into our ranch family back in 2012.

This sweet boy has been a loyal friend since day one. Always by my side, he used to run the ranch, keeping an eye on everyone, ensuring their safety.

The arthritis in his hips recently became so severe that his medications could not keep him comfortable. In keeping our promise to never let him suffer, Dr. Martin helped us walk him to his eternal home.

Duke was such a special boy, and his presence will be missed but knowing how much he loved his life brings us comfort and a reminder of the joy and purpose that comes with making a difference for those who need us most.

Swipe to see his favorite "look out" place to watch over his people each afternoon.

Twice a year, Mike, our bovine hoof trimmer, comes out to the ranch to trim and help make sure everyone's tootsies are happy.

Hoof health is critical for overall health, so we take it very seriously. All of our residents, regardless of species, receive routine hoof exams and care. In fact, we spend over $7,000 a year on hoof trims for our equine and bovine residents alone!

This morning, all of our cow friends got their exams and trims done. This is Walnut in the chute receiving his pedicure. As Mike works, I help provide reassurance. The chute doesn't hurt at all, and i's safe for both our residents and those working on them.

The entire process is super fast, too! Just a few minutes in and out, and of course, everyone did great and was looking for their cookie treats afterward.

Faith had a medical procedure done this morning that I'll be chatting about on Patreon later this afternoon. 💛

We'd sure be grateful if you'd consider joining us with a monthly gift of $1 or more. It's folks like you who enable us to provide consistent and high level care for our rescued friends.

You can join us at www.saleranch.org/superhero

Thank you for supporting Walnut and his friends, we appreciate you.

🌼 Calendula Reveal Time! 🌼

Yesterday, we shared our gorgeous calendula harvest and posed the question: Was Thug Muffin Thelma the calendula connoisseur?

Well, here's what went down:

Oak thought they smelled lovely, but that was it.

Louise, much like Thug Muffin, was curious but decided calendula wasn’t her thing.

Amber? Oh, Amber! She had us cracking up—her reaction was equal parts confusion and comedy. 😂

But the real calendula enthusiast? Our most senior goat girl, Ellie! She wasted no time savoring every petal. 🌸✨

We’d be honored if you’d consider joining us as a monthly Goat Guardian. Your support directly impacts the lives of our rescued residents and makes moments like these possible. 💛 www.saleranch.org/superhero

Beautiful calendula flowers for Thug Muffin.

This afternoon, I harvested greens for the animals and were bursting with calendula. A medicinal herb that's been grown for centuries for its anti-inflammatory and skin soothing properties. Folks consume it in tea or make salves. I recently read goats love them too, so I harvested some for our goat residents.

I offered a beautiful calendula boutique to several of them, and only one loved it. I'll share the results tomorrow.

The question is: Do you think Thug Muffin Thelma was the calendula connoisseur? 🤔👇

Drop your guesses below, and I’ll share the results tomorrow!

Before his rescue, he worked in a horse rental string here in wine country, used to carry children on trail rides. But when he began tripping and stumbling, his owner dropped him off at an unalive auction where he was destined to be shipped to Mexico and destroyed.

Thankfully, kindness intervened just in time. Instead of meeting a tragic end, Toby found safety and love here at the ranch.

Toby had severely neglected hooves and has a neurological disorder that sometimes causes him to lose awareness of where his feet are. His tongue often hangs out of his mouth, giving him the most endearing, goofy personality. Despite everything he’s been through, Toby is a HUGE cuddle bug who loves everyone he meets, and we’re so blessed to love and protect him.

While we may be different, we are the same in all things that matter. Toby and all animals seek the same things we do: love, safety, kindness, and shelter. This is why we believe petting zoos, horse rental strings, and any activity that profits off animals are never truly kind and often end in tragedy.

Toby has been safe for years with us, but so many animals still need kindness to find them. Together, with your help, we will continue to rewrite stories like his.

Thanks for supporting our life changing work 🙏💛

We kicked off the new year doing what we love, meeting the needs of our animal residents.

Today was hoof trims for both our small pig friends and half our equine herd. Foot soaks for Mr Handsome and his feathered friends, too. Our volunteers and Brenda arrived early to get morning chores done and we even managed to harvest more tomatoes for the animals fridges. So much goodness!

🌟Holy smokes, YOU did it! 🌟
Thanks to your generosity, we met our match and raised over $50,000 over the last month!

2024 was a challenging year with goodness weaved in. We said goodbye to some of our beloved residents and welcomed new one's into our ranch family. We hosted over 700 visitors this year to experience the magic of sanctuary. Cow hugs, goat cuddles, and incredible plant-based meals, all while elevating important conversations about the food industry. Our animal residents joyfully helped us spread compassion, and inspire hope for a kinder world through their stories.

This work isn’t easy. It’s a daily dedication to challenge norms, shift perspectives, and soften hearts. But because of YOU, our amazing community, lifelong care for our rescued residents is possible. Your support makes sanctuary possible, and we are so very grateful for your kindness.

The last sunset of 2024 was a beauty and a perfect way to close out the year. As we step into 2025, we’re full of hope and excitement for all the good we’ll continue to do together. New rescue stories, new connections, and new chances to elevate safety, care, and compassion for farmed animals.

Thank you for being a part of our community. Here’s to another year of hope, change, and progress towards a kinder world.

Happy New Year, friends! 🎉

2024 Impact Report: Celebrating a Year of Compassion and Transformation.

As 2024 comes to a close, we at Sale Ranch Animal Sanctuary are honored to reflect on the year’s milestones. Through the unwavering support of our community, we’ve continued to extend kindness, care, and hope to farm animals and people in need.

This year we welcomed Ruthie Bee, Boots, CeCe and Sully into our ranch family.

We had our hearts ripped out having to say goodbye to CeCe and Sully, a pain that will never go away.

We helped walk Mama Joy, Chancie, Kid Rock, Alvin, Dorothy, Fiona and Mick to their eternal home.

Cultivating Sustainability and Feeding Our Community.

Nearly 3,000+ pounds of organic produce were grown in our regenerative gardens, nourishing our residents and the planet.

500+ pounds of produce were donated to food-insecure families, our volunteers, and local vendors who support the sanctuary.

More than 300 plant-based meals were served at farm-to-table events, open ranch days, and our annual gala, inspiring compassionate choices in our community.

Facilities.

We completed our new big pig medical area, built CBs new mini barn and pasture, replaced old fencing and built 2 additional medical stalls in our equine paddocks to accommodate diet changes in our aging herd.

We partnered with Leap4animals,
Hosting 6 students each month as we work with future generations to protect animals and the planet.

Your steady support makes all this possible. Thank you for believing that farmed animals are worthy of medical care, safety and love. Together we will continue to shift perspectives and soften hearts.

Today is the last day to make a tax deductible donation for 2024. We are still hoping to reach our year end goal and meet our donation match opportunity.

We'd be grateful for your consideration. Donations can he made on this post or at www.saleranch.org/donate.

Thank you for your support our life changing work. We appreciate you and are honored to have your generosity.

Ruby Rae is loving her new cozy bed, and seeing her so content fills our hearts with joy 💓

We rescued Ruby Rae 22 months ago from a heartbreaking situation on a farm unsafe for both animals and humans. At just days old, Ruby and her twin sister were left without food or care. Tragically, her sister passed from starvation before help arrived.

Ruby was born with a degenerative neurological disease and became caught in a rusted fence, leading to a life-threatening tetanus infection. While she survived tetanus, her condition left her with severely contracted joints. For 18 months, she lived as a house lamb before graduating to our special needs barn, where she now thrives alongside friends with similar challenges.

Many would have given up on Ruby, but we are so grateful to be a place where individuals like her can live happily. Ruby enjoys coming out of her wheelchair during lunch and midday naps, and her new comfy bed has made this time even sweeter.

Caring for special needs residents like Ruby Rae is a privilege and a joy. Your support makes this possible, giving individuals like Ruby the love and care they deserve.

If you’d like to help or make a year-end donation, we’re still working toward our $2,500 donation-matching fundraiser goal. Every bit helps us continue creating these joyful moments. Thank you for believing in lives like Ruby Rae’s. ❤️

Our Story

We believe animals are living, breathing, beautiful beings who are someone not "something". Our mission is to rescue, rehabilitate and educate on their behalf while promoting a cruelty free lifestyle. We are a non profit farm animal rescue and sanctuary offering medical care and refuge to babies discarded by our food industry, hospice to senior horses and those with medical needs. Many of the sweet souls here at SRAS were rescued within hours of either being euthanized or sent to slaughter. Once healed and healthy we connect our animals and their stories to help the foster children in our community to heal. We believe bringing awareness to the plight of factory farmed animals will help create a more compassionate and kinder future for all beings on the planet.
