In tonight's edition of "What's down the microscope", we bring you the mast cell. These cells are part of your immune system and are very pretty with their distinctive purple granules.

Sometimes these cells form lumps or tumours in the skin. They can have a varied appearance, from a smooth pink raised mass to a rough surfaced lump and just about anything in between. The one thing they have in common is that when we take a needle sample and check it under the microscope, we see these characteristic round cells with purple granules.

Mast cell tumours can range from "we surgically remove this lump and it's gone" to " yeah this is a bit more serious" and we need a pathologist to make that call based on examining microscopic slices of the lump.

Any unusual, growing or changing lump or bump on your dog or cat should be checked by your vet.

The divine Miss Tansey is in the building!!!
Tansey came in to see us with a sore eye. She dazzled us with her array of tricks (and of course she was rewarded with lots of treats).
I must say I was quite tempted to sneak Tansey home with me tonight.

The very stylish Bear came in to see us with a sore paw. His gorgeous teal coloured tail (non toxic, pet safe colour), matched
Dr. Audrey’s colourful locks. Bear showed us his tricks and beautiful manners to score lots of treats tonight. (Yes, we are suckers for good manners & cuteness overload here).

The medical technology we have for our pets these days rivals that of human medicine. From MRI to chemotherapy to very technical surgical procedures, our dogs and cats can have some amazing care

This technology extends to reproductive care. This charming boy, Jamie, is a 10 week old purebred Lowchen puppy. His mum Lana lives here in Brisbane. His dad, however, is currently sunning himself in California. He had semen collected, health checked and frozen before being flown by FedEx to Melbourne. There it cleared Australian biosecurity and, still frozen, was flown to QLD. When the time was right, his sample was thawed and Lana was artificially inseminated. The result was a litter of 4 beautiful babies.

It's just remarkable to think that this is even possible! It means that good genetic material can be used to improve the health of animals worldwide.

Jamie's siblings are living in Brisbane and Cairns, but he is still looking for his forever home. If interested, please message and we can put you in touch with his breeder.

This beautiful tawny frogmouth was bought in tonight after an altercation with a car. You can see his right pupil is more dilated than the left, and he also has some damage to his wing. This rather cranky lil bird (probably has a headache from hell, so no wonder he was so cross), now has some pain relief on board, and will be sent to Australia zoo wildlife hospital for a thorough check over. We’re hoping that there is no major damage and that he can be back to his nocturnal adventures once again.
Thanks to the wonderful gentleman who bought him in.

Little Miss Rosie came to visit us last night, feeling rather poorly after surgery a few days ago. Her mum sent us this beautiful photo and has been keeping us updated on her progress. We are happy to hear that Rosie is feeling much more like her usual self today, and her tail is wagging again.
Look at that beautiful face!!!

The fabulous Ollie came in with some sore and itchy ears. (Not that that stopped him enjoying all the treats offered, and showing us his amazing tricks). Hopefully his ear meds will make him feel back to his best really soon.

Final update. Owners have been found and are on the way to collect their little adventurer. Thank you everyone for sharing.

Update - upon closer examination under all the matting, this little one is a boy!

This little boy was bought into us tonight. She is very thin and weak. There is a possibility that he may have been missing for a while. Is very matted. Microchip details not found. He was found in North Harbour estate, Burpengary East. Our lovely Good Samaritan has taken him to North Lakes pet emergency for some overnight care. Please share and let’s try and reunite this little lost soul with his owners

The beautiful Missie visited us with a swelling just below her eye. She was diagnosed with a carnassial tooth root abscess.
These abscesses involve an infection at the base of the tooth. The symptoms may include swelling under the eye, which may be painful to touch. Your pet may be reluctant to eat, especially hard foods such as kibble, and sometimes we see drooling and smell a bad odour coming from your pet’s mouth.
A veterinary visit is needed to treat a tooth root abscess.
Treatment usually includes pain relief and then removal of the affected tooth asap.

Spunky little Diego came in to visit us again tonight so we could see how well he is doing now. This little man was very sick when we first saw him. It’s lovely to see him back to his usual cheeky self, with a spring in his step and an appetite for treats.

In this issue of "What's Down The Microscope"

These little organisms are Malassezia, a common cause of itchy painful ears. They look a bit like little snowmen.

They're present on all dogs, but in some cases they multiply and cause those familiar symptoms of an ear infection - shaking and scratching the ears. We can usually clear them up with appropriate drops but if we don't address the primary problem, eg allergies, ear conformation, they recur - and that can be so frustrating for an owner!
