What an incredible session we had with Max today!! 🙌

Max used to be incredibly fearful and reactive for nail trims and even just reaching under him or touching his legs would make him jump and panic. Although he has come so far and is now able to be just about completely calm, comfortable, and cooperative for every step of the way, he does still typically take off after he's done and doesn't come back to see me. 🐾

Today for the first time Max made a choice to come back to see me today and in fact ended up laying in my lap for several minutes while I gave him gentle pats. 💚🖤🩶

Do you know what "forced comfort" is? 🤔🧐

Oftentimes as dog owners and pet professionals we have an idea of what comfort is in our minds and try to "force" that comfort on the dogs. An example of this is a dog that pushes the blankets aside in the crate because they like the hard cold surface but we insist on putting the blankets in there because it must be more comfortable, right?! 🤷

In dog grooming a common tool that is often forced comfort is the Happy Hoodie. Many dogs tolerate it very well and we want their hearing to be protected and for them to be calm and comfortable but some dogs don't like the hoodie on their head.

Charlie here tends to have a freeze response to fear, so it's very possible she wasn't comfortable communicating to us for a while that she didn't like the hoodie. The last two or so times however she has randomly tried to take the hoodie off. So we tried it without this time and used cotton balls in her ears instead.

Charlie didn't have any issues this time and in fact for the first time in 3 years Charlie took treats on the table during the grooming process!! A clear sign that she felt more comfortable today without the hoodie.

It's important for us to remember every dog is an individual and not every dog is going to find the same things to be as comfortable as other dogs. 💚🖤🩶🐾

Reinforcers aren't always in the form of food... Sometimes they are hugs!! 🐾💚🖤🩶

Sheeva the Shih Tzu had her first visit with Canine Cosmuttology today and she was a brave girl who found comfort in hugs!

Sheeva typically has trazadone for grooming as her anxiety gets so high through the process but we had a very successful first session without it today! We were able to keep her calm and build trust today by listening to her individual needs and comforting her how she needed it. Cooperative Care can do so much for these sweet little souls! 🐾💚🖤🩶

Sammy used to go to the vet to have his toenails trimmed and would be held down by 4... that's correct, 4 vet technicians to get his nails cut. 😱

Sometimes if we as pet professionals don't understand or consider canine behavior or take time to help dogs understand and get through a process, we can actually cause problems that aren't necessary. We have to be open to doing things differently if we want a different result.

Sammy LOVES treats, but he does NOT LIKE being held firmly or against his will when he is uncomfortable or afraid. We take our time with Sammy, giving him treats for toes, making sure he feels comfortable every step of the way. Sammy deserves a Fear Free experience, and that's all he'll ever have with Canine Cosmuttology. 💚🩶🖤
