A beautiful afternoon of trailing in the sun ๐ŸŒž then into the sunset ๐ŸŒ…, with a fabulous mix of coastal, woodland, quiet lanes, residential and urban areas to trail in.

We trailed into the pub๐Ÿบ, dodged several friendly cats ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿˆโ€โฌ›๐Ÿˆ, did a car pick up ๐Ÿš˜, trailed along the tidal coast road, explored far alerts, and worked several tricky road junctions.

The locals were incredibly friendly, twice checking on our trail layers to make sure they were OK, and offering them lifts!!!!

The dogs were all on fabulous form, and the hot chocolate โ˜• from the pub - plus the pub grub afterwards ๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿฅ˜๐Ÿ˜‹ - both come highly recommended.

Another venue to return to soon ๐Ÿฅฐ!!!!!

Very proud of my girl for this successful GAK9 assessment trail ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฅฐ.

We don't get much chance to practise aged trails in urban and semi-urban environments, so I was extra impressed with how she problem-solved this trail. Double blind, 37 minutes aged, 430m, lots of surface changes, road crossings, buildings plus open spaces (tarmac and grass) to negotiate, dog walkers, vehicles, and - I found out afterwards - a coach load of people emptying out over the top of her trail!!!!

Very good girl Roxy - you did it without any help from me. 12 years old but the nose is still young ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ•โ€๐Ÿฆบ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ•โ€๐Ÿฆบ๐Ÿฅฐ.

A huge thank you to Anna from Follow Dogs for all of the amazing training, and to Sandra for laying the trail ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ‘ฃ.

A stunning night at a stunning venue ๐ŸŒ•๐Ÿฐโญ.

With the very chilly air ๐Ÿฅถ, the developing frost โ„, and the beautiful mix of clouds ๐ŸŒฅ and moonlight ๐ŸŒ•, it was fascinating to see just how far the scent was travelling, even though it felt so still.

Early proximity, sweeping flowing negatives, and some beautiful tracking of footprints ๐Ÿ‘ฃ in the frosty grass โ„, all meant that we could see some fantastic examples of trailing behaviours.

Fabulous resilience, decision making and problem solving from all of the dogs ๐Ÿ•โ€๐Ÿฆบ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ•โ€๐Ÿฆบ, including trails around the castle ๐Ÿฐ, down to the lake ๐Ÿž, onto a boat jetty๐Ÿ›ฅ, through the woodland ๐ŸŒณ, and into the toilets ๐Ÿšป๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ™ˆ.

I take no credit for the photos - they are all courtesy of my fabulous clients and their superior phone cameras ๐Ÿ“ฑ๐Ÿ“ท๐Ÿฅฐ (I deleted all of mine, they were rubbish ๐Ÿ™ˆ!!!!).

Two lovely days of trailing in the warm November sunshine ๐Ÿฅฐ๐ŸŒž๐Ÿฅฐ.

One day with my trailing gang at Arnside - always a stunning location on a sunny day with the benefit of a fabulous cafe ๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿฐโ˜•๐Ÿฅช๐Ÿ˜.

A few of the trail layers encountered navigational errors ๐Ÿ™ˆ, partly due to leaves obscuring the woodland paths, and partly due to gate discombobulation ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ!!!! But all of this led to some unplanned but superb extra problem solving from the dogs and handlers, as well as a couple of double blind endings. As ever, a great learning curve for all, including another reminder for me of the benefits of taking a note pad and drawing the planned route out for avoidance of any doubt!!!!!

The second day was a trip over to North Yorkshire so that I could focus on trailing with Rox ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฅฐ. A fabulous day of aged and longer trails with Catterick K9 Mantrailing.

A twisty, aged trail that started around the buildings proved tricky when I messed up the first junction, and then I got the line wrapped round a post at a gate that the trail hadn't gone through. I ended up pushing her through this gate for a second time despite the fact that she'd already given a very clear negative on the other side - overthinking made me question whether she'd turned around because of the bridge, but she actually wasn't worried about it at all ๐Ÿ™ˆ. Ultimately I called this trail, as despite an excellent start and a good recovery after my first mistake, when I did actually cast her in the field where the final leg was, she couldn't pick the trail back up. Sometimes a mistake too far will end the trail for the dog, and on this trail, the vast majority of mistakes were mine!!!!

Mantrailing is a mindgame and more often than not, it's not the dog's fault when it goes wrong - not having the courage of my convictions is usually my mistake, and if I'd cast her in the field before pushing her into an area where she'd already made a correct decision she would probably have solved it!!!!!

Her second trail was one of those that puts you on cloud nine - 620m of stunning single blind awesomeness. Nose down, focused, supremely confident, never missed a beat, the perfect tracking-style trail with a perfect trailing app overlay ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿฅฐ.

It was also lovely to be on the hiding end of the trail for some of the other fabulous dogs on the session - always a good reminder of how much fun it is to hide as well as handle ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ™‚๐Ÿ•โ€๐Ÿฆบ๐Ÿ˜.

Thank you all for the trailing and the weather โ˜€๏ธ๐ŸŒคโ˜€๏ธ. Rox and I both had a blast.

Some of the trail layers survived the hills at today's venue by doing a lot of lying down on the job!!!!! ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ™ˆ๐Ÿคฃ

A fabulous collection of successful walking trails - both walking away ๐Ÿšถโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿงโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿง and walking back towards. Plus a brilliant collection of complex trailing decisions - including split starts, a casting start, contaminated starts, contamination from familiar odours along the trail, duck ๐Ÿฆ†๐Ÿฆ†๐Ÿฆ† distractions, and some AMAZING age vs fresh decisions from our host's dogs.

We spent the afternoon having some fun with catnip toy searches - such a fun nosework game for dogs and handlers ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ˜!!!!!

Plus of course, the obligatory consumption of cake ๐Ÿฐ๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿฐ.

A huge thank you to our hosts for allowing us to use your beautiful home!!!!! Until the next time ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜.

Three days of trailing up in north Cumbria, and we're now back home for some R&R (well actually a day of admin and report writing, but at least less clocking up of steps ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ™ˆ๐Ÿคฃ!!!!).

Thursday evening's Howloween Hiding at Oak Tree Animals' Charity was full of spooky fun and themed trails. The dogs were on amazing form and they all rose to the challenges that we threw at them, clearly demonstrating their problem-solving abilities ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿคก๐ŸงŸ๐Ÿ€๐Ÿง›โ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿง™โ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ˜.

In contrast, Friday evening at Watchtree Nature Reserve proved to be surprisingly challenging for some of the dogs. Residual contamination from the many daytime half-term visitors, plus something else in the air that night meant that trailing conditions were quite tricky. We explored the degree of confidence with which dogs both give and act on their negatives, as well as how contamination, distraction scents and blown odour will impact the distance that it takes before they know that they've lost the trail. For the handlers, the challenge is reading and responding to those negatives, which is even more difficult in the dark!!!! ๐ŸŒ™๐Ÿ”ฆ๐ŸŒ™

Saturday was spent at one of our lovely, private, rural venues in the middle of nowhere. Big fields, minimal contamination and quiet country lanes allowed us to focus on longer/aged trails for two of the dogs. We also explored setting up trails that enable the dogs' to maintain contact with the trail and recover it after they've lost it without any help from us. This is a great way of developing accuracy, independence and resilience - but it also takes a lot of thinking about how and where to set up the trails so that we don't make it too difficult, or reinforce too much searching.

Knowledge of each dog's capabilities, and awareness of the wind direction are fundamental when setting up these trails. I'm never sure whether it's the physical steps๐Ÿšถโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ‘ฃ๐Ÿšถโ€โ™€๏ธor the mental ones ๐Ÿคฏ that are more tiring when running trailing sessions, but I think on balance it's the thinking ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿค”๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿคฏ!!!!

We then spent the rest of the afternoon playing with scentwork in a few different areas. The focus was on difficult finds for some, and bringing back the joy of searching for the others. It was great to collaborate with fellow instructor Caz as our approaches to scentwork are so similar, and she also brings with her a vast wealth of operational experience ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿฅฐ. My personal highlight???? Seeing a wolf ๐Ÿบ searching a scent wall with her trusty hound ๐Ÿ•.....

Eight sessions of trailing and scentwork this week ๐Ÿฅฐ - brilliant fun, great company, spooky silliness and LOTS of cake ๐Ÿฐ๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿฅฎ. Thank you to all of my fabulous clients and fellow instructors for helping me LOVE what I do!!!

R&R day for Rox, admin day for me, then back for more sniffing fun tomorrow!!!!

My attempt to slow this big, powerful Boxer down was using the O of SLOW as the scent article ๐Ÿ˜.

The pictures aren't brilliant, and the handler couldn't see how well her boy took scent as she was behind him, but he did the most beautiful sniff around the curve of the O. And he trailed soooooooo steadily throughout the whole trail!!!!

I love using transfer scent/contact odour on a fixed object as a scent article, as you can really see how the dog seeks out, locates and then details the human odour on the object. It's often particularly useful for the more drivey and/or gung-ho dogs as it encourages them to think a bit more before they start.

We headed to a new venue yesterday and made the most of the opportunity to test some interesting components. As we were surrounded by cycle paths we could have a play with bike ๐Ÿšดโ€โ™€๏ธ trails - a different scent picture for the dogs as there is less in the way of ground disturbance, and the trail-layer's odour will disperse in a different than if they were walking๐Ÿšถโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿšด๐Ÿšถโ€โ™€๏ธ.

We also did two more walking back towards trails, gates, decoy gates, lots of distractions (especially for Merlin, he was jinxed by distractions!!!!), planned cross-contamination to test scent discrimination with familiar odours, bench seat starts, bridges, trailing into the toilets, trailing through a tunnel, and some superb problem-solving from all of the dogs ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฅฐ.

Fabulous work from teams Flook, Bonnie, Merlin, Keeva and Roxy ๐Ÿคฉ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿคฉ. We'll definitely be heading back here again ๐Ÿ™‚.

Another amazing five days of trailing geekery and development with Anna of Follow Dogs this month.

I sooooooo look forward to her spring and autumn trips up north. They are such an excellent opportunity to continue fuelling my mission to learn as much as possible about developing my skills as both an instructor and a handler, as well as to gauge the progress that Rox and I are making as a team.

We're always joined by a dedicated group, made up of a mix of clients and fellow instructors. The geekery cup overflows, and the challenges that are set by Anna push us to test our skills, identify the gaps and - always - continue to learn more.

This time round we spent 2 days in Scotland and 3 in Cumbria/Lancashire. With a mix of semi-urban, urban, big open spaces, and (soggy โ˜”๐Ÿ™ˆ) lakeside parkland, we tested and learned in a great range of spaces.

Roxy may be getting older, but her nose is as sharp as ever ๐Ÿฅฐ. She blew me away with her urban and semi-urban skills, including two successful aged double blinds ๐Ÿคฉ (one of which involved the intervention of a leafblower leading to a bit of a shortcut on air scent...), and three other fabulous single blinds - she was AWESOME!!!!

Birkrigg Common remained our nemesis venue ๐Ÿ™ˆ - every time we go there with Anna we see just how difficult it is for dogs to complete aged trails at this complex location. The winds come from every direction and the scent travels so far, that even the strongest of dogs can get confused. On the other hand, an aged trail at Fell Foot was a walk in the park in comparison!!!!!

The ins and outs of scent pictures, being careful about how we set up trails to ensure that we know what the dog is (and isn't!!!) learning, and tailoring the trails for the experience and capabilities of the different dogs, are all topics that are much discussed on these sessions.

Alongside the trails themselves, there's always so much to take away to ponder on and implement!!!!

Thank you Anna as always for your tireless enthusiasm, your passion and your willingness to share the contents of your brain with us - six months is too long to wait until the next one!!!!

We had fun yesterday having a go at walking trails, but this time where the trail-layer is walking back towards the dog instead of walking away๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿšถโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿšถโ€โ™€๏ธ. Essentially the trail-layer lays a trail, but when the dog is getting close, they turn around and head back towards the dog โžก๏ธโ†ฉโฌ…๏ธ.

Commonly used by criminals, this evasion tactic is the nonchalant strategy of 'I'll stop running and fool them by casually walking back in the other direction'. Yesterday we did it as Zombie ๐ŸงŸโ€โ™‚๏ธ trails - after all Zombies are rarely seen running away ๐ŸงŸ๐Ÿคฃ๐ŸงŸ!!!!

This is a fantastic problem for the dogs to solve as it's a totally different presentation of the trail-layer, even if they've done walking finds successfully already. Often the dog will bypass the trail-layer and follow the trail to the point where the trail originally stopped. This is exactly what Roxy did the first time we gave it a go, so today was a good opportunity to try it again alongside teams Charlie and Gilly.

The dogs demonstrated three totally different ways of solving the problem, but they all did it brilliantly. Charlie totally went in on proximity and air scent - zero hesitation!!!!! Gilly initially alerted from a distance on the person walking towards him, but then resumed trailing. He went a very short way past her, stopped dead and quickly worked out that she was the person he was looking for. Roxy trailed with her nose down pretty much all the way up to her person - I fully expected her to go straight past and carry on trailing, but she blew me away by giving the most perfect indication with no hesitation!!!!

Awesome work from Charlie, Gilly and Roxy ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿคฉ๐Ÿฅฐ. Score three to the dogs, zero to the Zombies ๐ŸงŸ๐Ÿคฃ๐ŸงŸ๐Ÿคฃ๐ŸงŸ!!!

Fabulous fun on the first of this year's Howloween Hiding sessions ๐Ÿ‘น๐Ÿคก๐Ÿ‘ปโ˜ ๐Ÿ‘บ!!! Alongside the many novel scent articles (rats ๐Ÿ€, spiders๐Ÿ•ท, body parts ๐Ÿฆถ๐Ÿ–๐Ÿง’, weapons ๐Ÿช“ and bones โ˜ ), we did a whole mix of fabulous themed trails.

A scentwork search for the murder weapon, zombie trails ๐ŸงŸโ€โ™‚๏ธ where the zombie was walking back towards us, a handshake start ๐Ÿคš, a trailing dog dressed as a pumpkin ๐ŸŽƒ, a black cat ๐Ÿˆโ€โฌ› tracking down her lost witch ๐Ÿง™โ€โ™€๏ธ with the aid of her trusty hound ๐Ÿ•โ€๐Ÿฆบ, a whole variety of Grim Reaper trails including taking scent from the victim and a contaminated scent article so both the Grim Reaper and his victim had to be found from just one scent article ๐Ÿช“.

Plus - of course - far too much cake ๐Ÿฐ๐Ÿ˜‹๐ŸŽƒ!!

Thank you to my dedicated trailers for a lovely afternoon - the dogs were all pawesome!!!!
