Train the dog in front of you.
•
Ronin and his owner have been working hard over the last month working on reactivity with other dogs using positive reinforcement, and he is showing amazing progress!
•
Other trainers had used e collars with him which caused him to shut down and made his reactivity worse. Don’t get me wrong, training tools absolutely have their place, but this is why training the dog in front of you is so important. Not every dog needs an e collar or prong. Sometimes all it takes is patience, understanding body language, to get to the root cause along with building a relationship with appropriate boundaries and rewards in order to see a difference in your dog’s behavior.

Great job Ronin, keep up the good work.

Goose has been making amazing progress in our private training program! Over the last few weeks we have been building up a solid ‘place’ command. Today, we added ringing the doorbell, knocking on the door and her owner opening the door to that ‘place’ command. This helps eliminate reactivity when there’s a knock or ring at the door, prevents your dog from running out the door, and helps prevent your pups from getting overly excited and jumping up on your guests, which is all part of having good manners in the house. Good job Goose!

Haimi is a dog that really challenged me the last couple of weeks. He was an incredibly anxious dog when he first arrived for his board and train, so anxious in fact that he would not settle, refused to go in a kennel, refused to do much of anything even with high value treats, and I almost sent him home. However after a few days, he started to settle in nicely, and I was able to work with him more. From a dog that had no confidence and wouldn’t even step foot in a kennel, to a dog that now willingly goes to his kennel when told, no longer rushes out of his crate or through doors, focuses nicely and is so much more confident, I am so incredibly proud of how far he has come. It’s taken alot of work but seeing him as a totally different and confident dog is so worth it. I can’t wait to see him thrive at home!!

Mango has been with us for the last two weeks for board and train. She has been making some amazing progress and has been working hard on her home manners as well as starting on some service dog tasks. Here, we’re working on a solid place command, and learning that even though we’re talking to her, she’s not allowed to get off until I tell her “free”. Good girl @mangodiggs
Zodiac is our new resident dog and he is my own personal service dog in training. Over the weekend he learned a new trick! So this week’s trick of the week is ‘orbit’.

Ryker update!!
•
It’s been a while since I made a progress update on Ryker. We have been working hard to build a good loose leash heal and focus when there are lots of distractions, especially in tight spaces. We really tested him today, working in the busiest section of Home Depot and he rocked it!
•
Next step is getting his CGC test done at our next session!

As a dog trainer it’s important to constantly be learning new skills and new methods of dog training. Even the best trainers can benefit by going back to basics and taking classes with another trainer. There’s always something new to learn. The last six weeks I’ve been taking basic agility ground work classes with Ember. Together we have drastically improved our connection with one another and I have improved my skills both as a dog trainer and as a handler, and I am so proud of our improvements. I will be continuing to take agility classes for the next few months in order to continue to improve upon my current abilities in order to help me develop into a better trainer. There’s always room for improvement!

I am so proud of Ryker and his handler’s progress over the last few months. Last night Ryker did his first real alert for his handler, so here are some clips of him training with positive and negative samples to celebrate! Our next challenge is working on public access and earning his CGCs while maintaining consistent alerts!

Ryker had his first public access training session today at Home Depot. We’re working on loose leash walking with distractions, focus, and settling in a public setting. We still have a ways to go but I’m so proud of his and his handler’s progress and watching them grow as a team. Keep up the good work!

I can’t believe it’s been a month since Bronn first arrived and he will be going home tomorrow. He has made huge progress in the time he’s been with us. When he was dropped off on the first day, he literally dragged me into the house. Well those days are long over for him. We spent a lot of time working on leash pressure and proper heeling on both sides. The hardest thing for him was trying not to run everywhere, especially going in and out doors, but he mastered that too along with ‘place’. I’m super proud of him, but I’m sad to see him go, I enjoyed having a golden in the house. His owner will be continuing private sessions with me, so you’ll definitely see more of him again in the future.
