The word koala (English koala) comes from the Darak[en] word gulawan or its shortened form gula. The original transcription of cullawine was gradually superseded by the variant koola. Although the vowel /u/ was originally spelled "oo" in English orthography, it was changed to "oa"[2] perhaps by mistake. It was erroneously believed that this word meant "does not drink" [
