WHY I FEED MY DOGS SEPARATELY
I never used to, there always seemed to be this invisible badge of honour if you had multiple dogs and you could feed them all together but then I started to watch how my dogs felt in this type of situation and that’s when I started to separate them for feed times.
None of my permanent 3 dogs has food aggression with each other or humans so there is no negative behavioural issue as to why I feed separately.
It’s important to me that my dogs are calm when they’re eating and that there is no anxiety. Having a Bloat breed in the family really hammered this home for me. Stress affects gut health and bloat is a digestive disease so I wanted my Dane and the rest of the pack to be as chilled as possible at mealtimes so I separate. 1 dog I separate with a door from the others simply because that seems to make him the most comfortable whereas the other 2 are happy to be around each other at what they feel is an appropriate distance.
The new member to the pack (foster puppy Shane) came from a starvation background so he will be fed in a crate to make him feel as safe as possible around food and no dog is allowed near his crate whilst he is eating. We are also doing some other training with him to help him feel safe and that food is no longer something you have to be nervous about if other dogs are around.
I absolutely see the value in feeding dogs together and I think it would be necessary at one point or another in their life for that to happen, I know a trainer who back ties the dogs to ensure safety is maintained whilst they are learning their eating together skills.
Whilst badges of honour can feed our egos and make us feel valued and accepted by our peers, our dogs physical and mental health IMO is paramount.
If your dog has food aggression issues please seek the help of a behaviourist and in the meantime feed separate, feeding behind a closed-door can often bring them the calmest.
Even if your dog simply eats fast in the presence of another dog I would recommend separating because that dog is showing you that they’re not entirely comfortable.
