THE REAL DEFINITION OF HUMILITY

Society will try to convince you that "humility" is about living small...

Thinking small...

Acting small...
..and concealing your wins to avoid hurting someone else's feelings.

Nonsense.

This is a false interpretation of humility that's been weaponized to keep you from going out and taking massive action to become who you were meant to become.

Understand that real humility has nothing to do with sacrificing your potential to live within the boundaries and limitations of the people around you.

Real humility is knowing that no matter how great you become...

You will always have more to learn and improve on.

Real humility is knowing that no matter how many people you beat...

You will never be "better" than anybody else.

Real humility is knowing that the results you've produced are a reflection of the actions you've taken…

Not because you have some special talent or skill that nobody else has.

How other people choose to react to your wins and success is irrelevant.

Real humility is knowing that other people are just as good as you if not better.

They just haven’t taken action.

You have.

You do.

Every day.

Like your life depends on it.

Because it does.

Learn what it actually means to be humble...

Then go out and build the biggest, most successful life you possibly can.

I asked a friend in the hunter-jumper world why he thought there was so much reliance on draw reins, restrictive rigs, strong bits, etc and he had a one word answer---“FEAR.”

“Fear of what?” I asked.

“Mainly fear of loss of control,” was his answer. He went on to say that many of the riders that he watched were basically either unfit, or green, or over-mounted, and that they didn’t want a very high level of risk, and that one way to lower risk was to have sort of “automaton” horses.

Horses can be gotten to a state, he said, of what we call “learned helplessness.”
I Googled “learned helplessness” and here’s what I read---

“What is learned helplessness in simple terms?
In psychology, learned helplessness is a state that occurs after a person has experienced a stressful situation repeatedly. They believe that they are unable to control or change the situation, so they do not try, even when opportunities for change are available.”

While this definition pertains to humans, we can see how it can also apply to a horse which has been repeatedly forced into submission.

A great explanation above 👆 (from Talmark farm) the other thing is feel, so many people can’t get a feel for a horse or the horse to feel back because they don’t know when to release so to make them softer or get the “upper hand” as it’s usually a quicker way to accomplish the look they are after.

When working with horses, it is important to understand that they learn best when they are in the right mindset. This typically happens when they are below or at their learning threshold. While a horse can still process and learn when slightly above threshold, the most conducive learning environment is when they are comfortable and below threshold. In this state, horses are calm, engaged, and open to new experiences.

During our clinics at Fortis Ridge Stock and Quarter Horses, we explore this concept in depth during our theory sessions, teaching participants how to recognise and work within this learning space to ensure effective training and positive outcomes for the horse resulting in a happy calm horse overall whether in the saddle or on the ground.

I am not gifted, I am not special, I am not a whisperer.......

(In a world full of fake social media I'm posting the ugly, the truth, the version no one wants you to see or hear)

People ask me where the horses started, where my "gift" came from ..... My grandfather rode horses in the war, my mother loved horses and owned them every chance she had, my father rode horses in his earlier years to get a job done but other than that I didn't come from a big competition home I wasn't handed down skills on training horses.

But for whatever reason I was always drawn to horses, the smell, the dirt, the wild ways, the ways they touch your soul when you need it most....

This didn't make me special or gifted but what it did do was make me work very hard every second of every waking moment was horses from the time I could remember. Every sleeping moment every dream was horses.

There are many naturally talented horse people or people that had the background and the family/genetics behind them to be brilliant but they didn't have the want or the drive!

I am not special but I sure as hell have the want and the drive and work every day bloody hard to make the best life for the horses I am around !

"You've got to be awake and alert every minute, every stride, because you're working with something alive that thinks and feels. He makes decisions. If we're not there to help him, he may make a decision we don't want him to make. Then we blame it on the horse. But, I grant you, it's not the horse's fault." - Ray Hunt
