Reactive dogs. Clover is reactive to joggers and cyclists. Maisy is reactive to other dogs. Runa is reactive to joggers, cyclists, and other dogs. Ms. Frizzle is reactive to larger dogs and strangers. Brooklyn is reactive to neighbors and trucks. Maple is reactive to other people that continuously look at her because she's so pretty..
None of these dogs are aggressive. None of these dogs want to hurt anyone because that's what they want to do. They all require clear and consistent leadership to prevent and manage reactivity, and a bite history from being established if not already.
Will a reactive dog bite? Absolutely! Dogs have 3 ways to deal with a situation. Fight, flight, or indifference. Fight looks like lunging, charging, snarling, snapping...etc "aggressive" looking behaviors being projected TOWARDS a perceived threat. Flight looks like the dog cowering, avoiding, trying to escape, jumping around wildly, redirecting on the handler, hitting the end of the leash in the opposite direction in attempts to move AWAY from a perceived threat. Indifference can either manifest as neutrality, where the dog has no feelings either positive or negative about a situation and simply carries on; or a learned helplessness that manifests in a stressed dog that feels a lack of options and resorts to just shutting down disassociating.
