Secret (not so secret) ways to train your Historic Graves Dog!

Build a strong bond through positive reinforcement training methods.

Focus on foundation training by teaching your dog to alert when they detect target odor. Use your positive reinforcement techniques to reward.

Train your dog to discriminate between different odors, such as human remains and animal remains. Gradually increase the difficulty.

Still wrapping my head around this!

Umwelt. “The part of those surroundings that an animal can sense and experience - its perceptual world.” From Ed Young’s Introduction of his amazing book An Immense World.

Do you think about your dog’s umwelt? How do they actually sense and experience their world, and their work? How does your dog understand you?

An Immense World - a great read.

Don’t make this mistake!

Training in too many disciplines.

What is too many? If you don’t have enough training time to be excellent in the field, then you’re making a big mistake.

Remember focus works. Specialize in those disciplines you have several hours each week to train and learn.

16-20 excellent training hours a month, per discipline. That's what "they" say.

We focus only on Archaeo Dog work.

It’s all about the Umwelt.

Olfactory Umwelt: Dogs have an exceptional sense of smell, which is far more developed than that of humans. Working dogs with a strong olfactory umwelt are often used in tasks like archaeology surveys, drug detection, and explosives detection. They can perceive scents and odors that humans cannot, making them invaluable.

Archaeo Dogs have a remarkable ability to use their keen sense of smell to locate specific odors.

The way a detection dog alerts can vary depending on training, but we like the “passive alert.”

In a passive alert, the dog indicates the presence of target odor using a non-intrusive and non-destructive behavior. Examples include sitting, lying down, or freezing.

In dog training, combining classical and operant training methods can be highly effective.

For example, you can use classical conditioning to teach a dog that the sound of a clicker means a reward is coming (operant conditioning), and then use the clicker as a marker to mark and reward desired behaviors.
