Animal Resource Foundation We Fix and Feed Animals in Need Through our SNIP program we sometimes find an animal in need of medical care but with no one to provide it.
(38)

Animal Resource Foundation supports animal welfare in our state by offering programs to the public and rescue groups.

--SNIP (Spay/Neuter Incentive Plan) Program
This program offers low-cost spay and neuter options for low-income pets. An application is required to determine eligibility.

--Apollo's Fund
Apollo's Fund is reserved for homeless animals in great need. We contact our rescue partners

to find out if any are able to take in the animal if we provide veterinary care. We pay the medical and they get the animal into their shelter or foster home. We do not take possession of the animal nor are we involved in the adoption process. We have helped a number of animals through this program.

--Rescue/Shelter Veterinary Assistance
We often provide financial assistance to rescue groups that have taken in an animal requiring extra care. Many of these animals require surgery or other treatments that can be very expensive and overwhelming for a small group with limited resources. While we offer all these programs we can only do so if we have funding. If you would like to help with any of these programs, please send a tax-deductible contribution to our physical address above or you can donate via PayPal by using [email protected]

This video is of a colony project we're working on with caretakers. They trap and transport the cats to IHA for spay or neuter surgery and vaccinations. They also provide food and water daily, as well as shelter.

Unfortunately, as is often the case, the caretakers don't have much extra money and need help feeding the cats. If you could help with a monetary donation or use our Chewy wish list to shop for dry cat food, the cats would appreciate it.

The caretakers found a sale on some dry food at the local Theisen's (51st St NE, Cedar Rapids) today. This sale would stretch your dollars further and help feed the cats throughout the upcoming cold weather. I will post photos of the food in the comments section. If you prefer to purchase the food and donate it, contact us to arrange to get the food to the caretakers.

Thanks in advance for your generosity.

We understand that this news may be disappointing, but we've decided to temporarily halt spay and neuter applications. We are not sure when we will open up the applications again. We need to ensure that all applications already approved have their animals spayed or neutered before we extend subsidies to new applicants. We appreciate your understanding and patience during this time.

We are asking for your support for our spay and neuter program. Unfortunately, due to limited funding, we have had to temporarily halt new applications until we can raise the necessary funds. Your contribution can make a real difference in our ability to continue providing this vital service to our community.

If you believe in the importance of controlling the pet population and promoting responsible pet ownership, please consider donating to our cause. Your support will help us cover the costs of spaying and neutering procedures for animals in need.

You can contribute to this fund using several different methods.

We want to thank the generous donor who sent three bags of cat food to help feed a large colony of cats. We are so appreciative, as are the caretakers, cats, and kittens they feed.

In their daily efforts, the caretakers provide food and water, and we, as an organization, support them with additional food when possible. We are working with the caretakers to ensure all cats are spayed or neutered and vaccinated.

We never release the colonies' locations or the caretakers' names. This is to keep both the cats and caretakers safe and to try and avoid conflict and harassment. Additionally, the caretakers often feed in the dark for extra protection.

We need your help. We are helping feed some cats and kittens in a colony managed by someone in the neighborhood. We are funding spay or neuter surgeries and vaccinations for these cats, but we need help with dry food. Unfortunately, those feeding the cats and kittens are not in a financial position to afford all the food they need. At this time, all of their extra money is used for transportation expenses to and from the spay and neuter clinic.

If you can help, here is a link to our Chewy list to help provide food in these cases.

Domino Update. A photo with Domino and a foster friend. This was before he was able to remove his bandage and splint. :)

Dr. Ayers contacted us last week regarding the x-rays of Domino's leg. Dr. Reimer mentioned that an arthrodesis (fusing of bones) could be an option as Domino continues to gain strength and conditioning but had reservations about it being a smooth recovery for Domino. Dr. Reimer did mention that an amputation would be a more direct fix, which often is an easier recovery than trying to mend an injury. However, we want Domino to be able to keep his leg. At this point, they feel it is too early to make this decision. We will focus on his eye and teeth and give his leg some more time.

Yesterday, Domino went in for a wound check, bandage change, and splinting. Somehow, Domino was able to remove his bandage and splint overnight. The appointment was GOOD NEWS! His injury has healed, and he is using his foot. Both Dr. Kingus and Dr. Ayers felt his leg had improved enough that it no longer needed to be bandaged or splinted. It seems all his recent free time has helped stabilize and strengthen his foot a bit.

Domino gained even more weight and is at eight pounds. He is doing well enough to move forward with the eye surgery. We received the estimate and timeline, and we will call next week to schedule the surgery.

The funds we have raised to date will likely cover the eye surgery, but we will need to raise more for the dental and any surgery that needs to be done on his leg. We hope that as he continues to use his leg, it gets stronger, making surgery unnecessary.

If you would like to donate to Domino's continuing care, you can use any of the options below.

Update on Domino

Domino has a lot going on. He went to Frey last week and saw Dr Ayers.

Domino presents as an 8-10 year old kitty that should easily weigh 11-12 lbs. When found, he was at 5.9 lbs. He is up to a little over 7 lbs.

He has an open wound on his leg, exposing his tibia. He had some injury that tore all his ligaments in the area of the damage, resulting in too much movement in his paw. Frey sent the x-rays to Dr. Reimer for his opinion on treatment options.

His left eye is non-functional and likely painful. They don't know if it is due to an injury or if he was born with the condition.

Domino has lots of purple tumors in his ears that produce wax. Cats can live well with these. Monitoring the tumors to make sure they don't cause problems is recommended.

He has a heart murmur and is anemic. However, as anemia can cause a heart murmur, controlling the anemia may resolve the murmur.

He had x-rays of his injured leg and chest. The chest x-ray was good, and there don't appear to be any broken bones in the injured leg. They are waiting for confirmation from Dr Reimer.

Domino has very few teeth and may need a dental once he is more stable and some of his other issues improve.

Dr Ayers cleaned and bandaged his leg wound. He also put a splint on the leg, and Domino will require regular bandage changes. He received oral antibiotics and is on pain meds as well. Domino needs to gain more weight and hopefully resolve the heart murmur before any surgery.

We will set up additional fundraisers once we have an estimate for all necessary treatments. We know that we have not raised enough for everything that needs to be done.

If you would like to make a donation, you can use any of the following methods.

Iowa Humane Alliance (IHA) is hiring veterinarians. Please share this far and wide. We cannot lose this valuable resource in our community.

Without IHA, we would not be able to offer spay and neuter subsidies to hundreds of animals every year. It would be extremely difficult for us to makes a difference in animal welfare without this affordable spay and neuter resource.

You can find out more about the positions available at IHA here.

Our local spay and neuter clinic needs Veterinarians in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Working in a low-cost spay and neuter clinic is the best way for veterinarians who want to make a difference in animal welfare and pet overpopulation.

We can't remedy pet overpopulation solely through adoption programs. Affordable spay and neutering are crucial in reducing unwanted companion animals' needless deaths and suffering. With a well-staffed clinic like Iowa Humane Alliance, we can make a significant dent through prevention.

We've subsidized spay and neuter surgeries through Iowa Humane Alliance since 2010. They are a great group of people providing essential veterinary services. Other programs also offer additional services to countless animals in our community.

IHA has spayed and neutered over 93,000 animals since opening in 2013.
We have Dr Jennifer Doll to thank for performing the majority of those surgeries
and for providing superb care for all of our patients.

Dr Doll would like to retire towards the end of this year and would love to mentor new graduates or familiarize other skilled surgeons on IHA's protocols.

IHA would like to hire two to three veterinarians, either full or part-time, to help us continue to make a tremendous impact in the lives of thousands of animals.
A detailed job description is available on our website,
iowahumanealliance.org/employment.

We need to get the word out so please share this opportunity with everyone you know.

To help spay and neuter more community cats, we have partnered with Good Shepherd Pet Alliance of Madison County.

As there is no low-cost spay/neuter clinic in their area, we each have decided to subsidize surgeries to bring the costs down where caretakers can afford to spay and neuter. In addition, we will require that cats receive vaccines to provide them with the most protection possible.

Our program will start small due to staffing issues at veterinary clinics and program funding. Animal Resource Foundation and Good Shepherd Pet Alliance of Madison County are all volunteer-run organizations. Initially, we will target three small towns that Good Shepherd Pet Alliance in Madison County serves. If we can gather support and people are interested, we will look at expanding the service area.

Our current project involves a colony of 14 cats in a small town in Madison County. Traps have been deployed and are wired open. Caretakers are feeding the cats in the traps until Saturday. Feeding in the traps allows the cats to become accustomed to the situation and willingly enter the traps. The actual trapping will start on Saturday.

We've included photos of the prepping process for trapping.

If you want to reduce the number of community cats, please consider a tax-deductible donation. Please put "Good Shepherd" in the memo to earmark these funds for this program.

Please consider a donation. We have the following donation options available. You can also use our QR code in the photo which allows more options.

As 2022 is coming to an end, we want to share our spay and neuter statistics. Our goal for 2023 is 500 animals spayed and neutered. But unfortunately, we can only offer financial assistance for surgeries and vaccinations with the financial help of our supporters.

Please consider us for your year-end giving contributions. Our program helps animals that would only receive surgeries or vaccinations with our financial support. By working together, we can reduce pet overpopulation and the suffering of companion animals.

While we have approved far more surgeries than were performed, the rest will carry over into 2023. Unfortunately, staffing issues and the nationwide shortage of veterinarians have limited the number of surgeries the spay and neuter clinic can perform daily. As a result, they have to restrict the numbers to preserve their staff's health and well-being. But, not to worry, they will get to everyone in time.

In other exciting news, we have had more dog applications this year than ever before. We plan to continue this trend by promoting more dog spay and neuters and raising awareness about our program.
