Where does non-anesthetic dental cleaning benefit your pet’s dental health? I will tell you what I believe. It does not replace anesthetic dentals. It does fill a void that I also believe gets overlooked or just ignored because we don’t want to anesthetize our pets regularly due to risk and because of the cost of anesthesic dentals. Those are just the reality of anethesic procedures. It also gives us another chance to look in your dog or cat’s mouth and find any obvious concerns that would give reason to get an anesthetic dental done that you may not have otherwise known about. Many small breed dogs need more frequent dental cleanings, dental prophys we call them, because they build up tarter and calculus more quickly. Most need a cleaning every 6 months to a year, on average, or more frequently for some older dogs or cats, and it is not practical for the before mentioned reasons to do anthestic dentals every time they need their teeth cleaned. This is where non-anesthetic dentals (and home care!) fits in. We can use the non-anesthetic procedure to help with maintaining oral health without needing to anesthetize each time they get tarter build up. Some say we still can’t see if there are problems without x-rays. That is why non-anesthetic dentals do not replace dentals with anesthesia. At any time an anesthesic dental is good even if we aren’t seeing problems and will set your dog or cat up for better oral health long-term. We talk about the gold standard for dental care being anesthesic dentals, but I believe when used properly the two together make up the gold standard. I appreciate those who are open to referring to us and am happy to refer those needing further diagnostics/deep cleaning to their regular veterinarian.
