Spring has sprung and the boys are getting fiesty establishing dominance. Thankfully we take the time and effort to breed for temperament and egg production. Freezer camp is always open for bullies. None of my hens will have missing feathers around their necks from overly aggressive roos either.

Peafowl and turkey poults coming soon. Second pic is peacock eggs and 3rd is turkey eggs.

So i am making another batch of pickled quail eggs and someone recommended soaking in vinegar for a few hours. I decided to only soak for an half hour. The chemical reaction is crazy. It sizzles the dye and calcuim awayand your left with just the membrane to remove. Alot easier to peel.

No. These are not pickled eggs. These are homegrown, unwashed eggs stored in lime water. The lime water fills in all the pores of the egg and encases them in a shell of "glass". Water glassed eggs can last stored at room temperature like this for up to 2 years. This method of preserving raw eggs has been used since the 1800s and was common even into the 1940s and 50s. When refrigerators became a standard kitchen appliance, water glassing almost became a lost art.
You cannot use commercial eggs for this because they have all had the protective coating (bloom) washed off the shell and will quickly go bad. I recently scrambled up 18 eggs that had been stored in lime water for 7 months on an unrefrigerated cupboard shelf and they tasted perfectly fresh (although the yoke seemed a bit thinner than fresh eggs).
Anyhow, if you have an abundance of fresh, unwashed eggs, you might want to try putting some away for later. The ratio is one ounce (by weight) of lime (calcium hydroxide) to one quart of water. Calcium hydroxide is a completely natural, organic ingredient and harmless, although the powder is very fine and may irritate your lungs if you breathe it in. The lime water also quickly dried out the skin on my hands and I had to apply lotion to get them back to normal. When you do use the eggs, be sure to rinse them thoroughly before you crack them or they will taste like lime.
FYI: a gallon size container will store about 40 eggs. Lime is also known as calcium hydroxide. You can buy it in 50 pound bags in the masonry section of the hardware store, or in 1 pound bags in the canning section of the grocery store....often labeled as "pickling lime”. Thank you Jess Jassop NOTE: This is not my post, was worth sharing.

The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission has adopted a Notice of Intent (NOI) to change the red drum harvest regulations in the following ways:

✅ Change the red drum size limit from a 16-inch minimum size limit and a 27-inch maximum size limit to an 18-inch minimum size limit total length and a 24-inch maximum size limit total length.

✅Red drum's daily take and possession limit will be reduced from five fish per day to three fish per day

✅ The retention of any red drum above the maximum size limit of 24 inches total length will be prohibited

✅ The retention of red drum by captain and crew on charter or head boats will be prohibited. Charter guides and crew will still be allowed to engage in fishing on charter trips to demonstrate how to catch red drum, but will not be allowed to retain red drum toward any limit on the vessel.

The proposed changes result from biological data that indicate the red drum stock is experiencing overfishing resulting in an escapement rate below the 30 percent minimum limit, leading to a declining biomass. To increase the escapement rate and avoid the stock biomass declining to an overfished condition, management changes are necessary.

The Commission’s adoption of an NOI is the first of many steps in promulgating a final Rule, which can take between 90 days and one year.

Comments relative to the proposed rule can be submitted prior to noon on Thursday, October 5, 2023.

They are 2 weeks old today and enjoying some dried meal worms. I've handfed these treats for the last week and have more work to do but I believe I've curved the aggression a bit and on track of breeding docile mild temperate birds.
