This is what a “soft introduction” to dog camp looks like. When I bring in a new dog to the pack, there’s always a period of adjustment for both, the new dog, and the pack. There is a change in the dynamics of the pack that will occur and some dogs are more sensitive to that. This is why we have to be compassionate and responsible handlers to ensure the safety of every pack member. Walking together as a pack is how dogs bond, how they migrate. So when I introduce a new dog, there is no playtime, just walking. I have a very limited amount of time to get them to bond until they meet again, so it’s important they get comfortable with each other quickly. When training a dog, they have to master the basics before adding any one of the 3D’s (distraction, duration, distance). Today, we started our walk on a sidewalk in a quiet neighborhood, which has minimal distractions, to set them up for success. When the dogs were walking nicely behind me on the sidewalk, we moved on to grass, which has significantly more distractions in the form of smells. Only when they had successfully mastered this, I moved on to the trails, with lots of smells and stinky stuff they love. The pack the two new pups are joining will be “full” until everyone is 100% comfortable. I only add new dogs to the pack when the new dogs have integrated fully, showing no signs of stress and are having a good time. Pack walk ➡️Playtime ➡️Relaxation This is how our days with the pups are structured. It is important to start with a group walk so everyone can relax and be in a good mindset to go into playtime. During playtime, the pups are allowed to go on long leads or off leash to run around, sniff and engage in games with each other. At the end of the day, we always do a 10 minute relaxation exercise to bring the energy down and teach the pups some important skills they can use in their daily lives. #packwalk #packwalkadventures #dogtraining #sandiegodogs

We had a really high energy ⚡️ group yesterday so I opted for a long Pack Walk and straight into relaxation 🧘 . No playtime on high energy 🙅🏻‍♀️. This is why dog parks with unfamiliar dogs are a bad idea 🚫. There is no structure and dogs are running around without any behavioral boundaries creating a high arousal environment. This is a perfect storm ⛈️ for the pups to develop bad habits, reactivity and dog fights. Even though the dogs in my packs all know each other, often play together and have formed friendships, if they are showing signs of stress, high energy, anxiety or anything other than a calmed and relax demeanor, we stay structured and I guide them to down regulate their emotions. This helps them feel safe, builds their confidence and ensures everyone has a good day!
