Is Arthramid the Key to Preventing Joint-Related Lameness in Racing and Sport Horses?

Osteoarthritis is a progressive and degenerative condition that often leaves veterinarians revisiting the same horse for recurring lameness. This cycle continues as the temporary effects of traditional treatments—like corticosteroids and hyaluronic acid—wear off, until these options are no longer an effective or viable option for the horse.

Arthramid offers longer-lasting relief from lameness in comparison with traditional treatments due to its unique mode of action. Big news! We are proud to announce that we now offer shockwave services for clients and their horses. Extracorporeal shockwave therapy is a common, non-invasive therapy that uses high-energy acoustic waves to stimulate healing in ligaments, tendons, and bone structures. It is also beneficial to use routinely prior to and after long rodeo/show weekends to help the horses recover from any soreness from being in heavy work. What’s that Wednesday? Can you tell us what this lameness is called, what causes this condition, and course of treatment?

IRAP is one of the several types of regenerative therapies that we offer at Sandhill Equine. It is used to treat osteoarthritis and alleviate lameness by using your horse’s own blood to help repair the damaged joint. We collect the horses blood, incubate and spin it down to isolate the IRAP serum, then inject it directly into the problem joint. We freeze leftover samples for up to a year so that we can have maintenance doses on hand whenever needed. IRAP prolongs your horses althetic career by maintaining healthy joint function, helps repair damage rather than masking a problem, and is safe to use in horses where steroid use is contraindicated (cushings or laminitis).
