When working with aggression, I like to think of it as working with a zoo animal—meaning I operate on the principle that I should be able to maneuver the dog with minimal contact. This reduces stress for both the handler and the animal.
Some days she is nice to me, other days she's not😅

Here's why you should tether-train your dog:
• Teaches them to self-regulate their emotions and impulses without needing constant instructions from the owner.
• Desensitizes them to movement and activity around them.
• Reinforces the STAY command.
• Encourages independence, which can help prevent separation anxiety

In this video, I’m keeping this dog's mind engaged so he doesn’t entertain the demon inside his head.
As most trainers know, food or play is incompatible with fear. If he accepts food or engages in play in a stressful situation, it means he’s able to override fear. This is where counter-conditioning happens.
Will he ever be a normal, happy dog? Probably not. The goal is simply to help him function in this stressful world.

This dog's resource guarding is so severe that it has carried over to aggression during leash removal. We’ve reached a point where we can’t even remove his leash near his crate. He has already bitten one trainer, with several near misses involving other staff members.
One thing to note: I’m not focusing on fixing his crate aggression yet. My priority is to make it safe for us to take him out for his daily walk.

(2014) Another one from the archives. It's been a month since I started working at the shelter, and one thing I've noticed is that a lot of these dogs have 'stranger danger' issues. Most protection dog trainers know exactly how to deal with this since we actually teach our protection dogs a version of the 'stranger danger' exercise.
If you have a reactive dog, the first step is to change your mindset about dog encounters. Instead of avoiding them, actively seek them out. Each encounter brings you one step closer to achieving that 10,000 repetitions.
