It is with great sadness that the Dog Expo team has to announce the end of our beloved expo. After all the unknown of covid for the last 2 years, the team took a forced break and in doing so many of us found new time consuming passions. We are so proud of everyone and their new adventures; and we will miss our beloved education expo. But it is time to wrap up this chapter in our lives, and want to sincerely thank everyone in the community that came out to support us.
We do have some happy news to end on 😉 With closing our bank account, we have donated $350 to each of the following local rescues ❤ :
APARC - Medicine Hat
Bunny Run Rabbit Rescue
Cleo's Karma Canine Rescue - Adoptable Dogs
DWW Mulder & Medicine Hat Paws For Strength Foundation
Persian Dreams and Canine Themes Rescue Society
Medicine Hat SPCA

Sorry for the silence. We the board have been waiting to see how things panned out coming into 2021. And due to this being a large event and all the planning that has to happen well in advance; and along with all the unknowns of restrictions, we have waited as long as we can to make a decision to run or not.

For everyone safety and well being we will not be running the event in the park as we have before but instead We the Board have decided to try something a little different this year! We are going to adjust and adapt this year and try doing a virtual event.

Please bare with us while we sort out the finer details! More announcements coming soon!

Desert Blume Home Owners Association

Bobcats are common in Southern Alberta and have been recently spotted near Desert Blume. Bobcats in the wild are naturally shy of humans and are normally most active at sunrise and sunset. Bobcats are opportunistic hunters. If bobcats are known to be in the area, keep cats indoors and supervise small dogs when they are in the yard, as they may be vulnerable. More info can be found here: https://www.alberta.ca/bobcats.aspx

APARC - Medicine Hat

This icon will only be used if we expect to euthanize for space within 48 hours. In order to prevent this occurrence, we require adopters or transfers. The past 3 days have been overwhelming with the amount of kittens, cats, new mama's and babies being brought into the APARC facility.

We have reached out to many partner rescues, but there are capacity issues province-wide and do not expect to be able to transfer enough cats to remedy our capacity emergency.

We currently are in the process of vetting dozens of cats to be adopted, and have dozens more ready to go to their forever homes.

Our barn buddy program is bursting at the seams, and we are not currently able to take in any more feral cats until we are able to successfully place the ones we have currently adoptable and waiting for a home. We ask that the public leave feral cats for the time being so we can make space available to them before the coming cold weather, and consider closing their traps temporarily.

If you cannot adopt and still wish to help, please consider assisting in other ways. We are in need of supplies, fosters, donations etc. as well as letting all of your friends, and family know that APARC is looking for permanent homes for many animals if they may be looking to add to their families.

We update our wishlist often, www.aparc.ca/wishlist, and if you're willing and able to donate we would greatly appreciate the assistance! Every dollar we save on supplies is another dollar we can use to help a furry friend!

We urge owners to please be responsible pet owners by keeping your animals inside/on your property, and spaying/neutering.

For more information on our Catpacity Reporting System, please visit www.aparc.ca/catpacity.

Let’s stand up for our furry friends in Calgary!

Hold on to your cowboy hats Calgary, it's about to get wild around here. In a recent call for public feedback regarding a new animal control bylaw, they have proposed a number of restrictions on "pit bull" type dogs.

We have a lot to say about this and will be publishing posts over the next week. Please make sure you take the survey, email your council representative with a short and polite message indicating your support for breed-neutral legislation, join the Justice for Bullies Calgary FB page for updates and calls to action and make sure your notifications are "ON" so you do not miss our upcoming posts.

We decided to start our series by taking a BITE out of myth we have all heard numerous times. A recurring myth about “pit bull” type dogs is that they have some kind of extraordinary bite potential. An otherworldly bite strength! A special bite technique that causes more damage than other breeds! GASP!

This myth has reared its blocky head this summer in the City of Calgary – Your Local Government, which made the following comment:

“while pit bulls are not involved in more bite incidents than other dog breeds, the reason they are listed here is because a pitbull’s [sic] strength allows the potential for a more severe bite”

This is plain wrong. It’s based on urban legend and decades of sensationalistic reporting, not science.

First, there’s no good way to measure bite potential in dogs. You cannot put a device in their mouth and direct them to bite as hard as they can.

There have been some studies using dry skull measurements, by using electrical stimulation in anesthesized dogs, and by using calculations based on muscles and anatomy. None have given a satisfactory answer to the question, and the results vary from study to study.

In one very interesting Canadian study, 40 skulls were sorted by size (small, medium and large) and by shape: brachycephalic (flat-faced), mesocephalic (medium proportions) and dolichocephalic (elongated). It was determined that bite force was strongly correlated with the overall size of dog. For medium and large dogs, the shorter skull shape was associated with a somewhat stronger bite, perhaps because longer skulls have less leverage. This difference was not seen in small dogs.

So what does this mean in laymen’s terms? Breeds that fall under “pit bull” restrictions: the American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier and American Pit Bull Terrier, are all medium sized dogs classified as brachycephalic type. That means that they may have a slightly stronger bite than a similarly sized breed with a long nose. But there’s no reason to presume their bite would different from other brachycephalic breeds of the same size, e.g, the Chinese Shar-Pei, Chow Chow, or Boxer.

This also means that as a medium-sized dog, their bite strength would pale in consideration to breeds that are larger. There are dozens of breeds that are larger in size and, according to this study, would have the potential to do more damage with a bite.

Once again, science tells us that assessing an individual dog’s behaviour and looking at proven risk factors for dog aggression is the key to protecting community safety. Neither breed nor anomalous bite strength, are among these factors.
