All the hard work Miss Delilah has been putting in is really paying off as she matures into an adult dog.

Today on a visit to Tractor Supply she:

✔️ calmly observed as a group of male workers approached near us and started using equipment

✔️ watched a squirrel bounce through the parking lot

✔️ cruised around the store walking politely on leash

✔️ cooperated with sit, stay and leave it cues

✔️ asked friendly strangers for pets while staying calm and comfortable

✔️ checked in behind the register to say hi and politely took the treat offered to her and quietly spit it out when she realized it was a mere hard biscuit 😝

"What would you have done?" A dog trainer colleague recently asked me when describing the situation of meeting a fear aggressive big dog at the client's front door.

"I felt like the owner couldn't safely handle the dog and I was trying put a muzzle on the dog but couldn't get close" she described.

I paused for a second and told my fellow trainer, "it's really simple actually, I wouldn't be in that situation."

You see, working with dogs who struggle with big feelings is all about putting them in situations where they can collect wins. Where they learn I can be trusted. Where they reduce their stress and fear. And where they come to value cooperating with me (and their family).

So when I meet a dog, I stack the odds in my favor that they are going to quickly learn, Trainer Erin is safe. She doesn't force interactions with me, she shows body language that's calm and non confrontational and she sets things up to make sure I'm feeling good.

For puppy Mabel who arrived nervous about where she was and who I was, these little steps have made all the difference. Half way into her behavior evaluation, and she has a new human and several new dog best friends ❤️

And for a pup who needs to feel more confident away from home, this is the best lesson she could be learning right now.

Welcome Mabel! We can't wait to share with your family about how to bring out your best ❤️🐾

You certainly make a difference in the life of your dog! We are a huge part of their world. The choices we make for them, the space we create to hear them, the energy we bring to our relationship with them all dramatically influence the quality of their life.

Like many Belgian Malinois, Miss Clara can be suspicious of strangers and protective of her people. These are qualities bred into this guard dog breed.

And while Clara's family got help from their previous trainer about obedience and living with Clara, they didn't make headway on her aggression towards people and pups.

From her initial evaluation, we took a very different approach with Clara. Instead of trying to control her with commands when Clara was feeling protective, we decided instead to prove to Clara that in the vast majority of cases, there's no need to assume humans are dangerous.

Trying to supress Clara's DNA and big emotions just doesn't work very well and certainly doesn't foster a sense of trust and partnership with her family.

Within just a few sessions into their Ultimate Program, Clara is showing major improvement. She's seeing people on walks while not reacting. She's passing by people on the trail without feeling the need to guard. And she's been role playing holiday meal time where she'll be around new people while staying calm and comfortable.

When dealing with big emotions like fear, aggression and anxiety it can be tempting to try and just supress the symptoms we see by commands dogs to change what their body us doing.

But the most smart, kind and effective training actually gets a dog to change the point of view so they don't need to act up anymore.

Miss Clara is well on her way to being the happiest and beat behaved girl she can be. Good job!

Rey and Logan playing right by me without including me in the fun is NO FAIR! I'm really good at bitey face too!

-Rebel

Part of growing up is learning you don't always get what you want right when you want it. This is crucial for beings who live in social groups. Rebel learning how to cope with feelings of disappointment and frustration isn't just cute, it's also important in her social development!

Don't worry, Mattie quickly invited her to a boxing match 😜

Puppy Toby the chocolate lab is growing up into a teenager right before our eyes! He and his family are making their way through our Premium Program and making big improvements in calm cooperation.

Like many party puppy labs, Toby was over excited to greet, easily distracted, had selective hearing, pulled on leash and was convinced every dog he saw was his new best friend.

But with practice, this young man is excelling in making better choices that make it downright fun to take him into busy spaces as he passes by people and pups with ease.

Keep up the great work Team Toby!

To say Benjie has made a lot of progress during his Ultimate Program is quite the understatement!

This handsome dude was anxious around people and dogs and just didn't feel comfortable to let loose.

But with practice and dedication, Benjie has transformed into a playful, silly, more socially confident dog who is no longer reactive when encountering people and pups and even has been playing with his adopted sister.

Best of all, Benjie just seems a whole lot happier. He is often grinning ear to ear and is always ready for a fun roll in the grass.

What a joy to see Benj believe the world is safe and fun so he can adventure better with his family ❤️🐾

With a lot of carefully controlled experiences under her belt, Miss Rebel has gone from being unsure and overwhelmed in public spaces to handling them with ease.

Kids running up, a male jogger appearing behind us, a guy using loud tools nearby, and noises of all kind are no cause for concern.

The rest of this lady's training stay will be devoted to her reaction to seeing strange dogs while on leash.

Keep up the good work Rebel!

"When we she get over it? She's met 5 friendly dogs but still reacts to dogs she doesn't know."

Every being is different. How they see things. How they respond to things. How quickly they can change. How much help they need.

The best thing we can do is watch how our dogs behave so that we can meet them where they are at and guide them to the next step at the pace they can handle. They aren't choosing to be bad, they're trying to cope with their big feelings.

One of my favorite parts of this job is watching a dog parent change their perspective from:

➡️ my dog needs to do this/stop doing this

to:

➡️ I see my dog is struggling with this and now I know how to help them

What a gift for both dog and human ❤️🐾
