Keep your pets safe this holiday season with these six tips. 🐈🐕❄️

1. Avoid Hazardous Foods - Keep chocolate, alcohol, grapes, raisins, and other holiday treats out of reach. Limit table scraps and stick to pet-friendly treats.
2. Secure Decorations - Use pet-safe ornaments and secure trees to prevent tipping. Avoid tinsel, which can be harmful if swallowed. Hide electrical cords and never leave lit candles unattended around curious pets.
3. Mindful with Plants - Keep poinsettias, holly, and mistletoe away from pets—they’re toxic.
4. Provide a Safe Space - With guests and noise, ensure pets have a quiet area to retreat and relax. Keep pets indoors during New Year's Eve fireworks or other loud events.
5. Secure Fencing and Gates - To prevent accidental escapes, check doors, fences, and gates to be sure they are secure.
6. ID is Key - Make sure your pet is wearing an ID tag and their microchip registration is up to date.

Lost dogs often survive by finding natural food sources, scavenging, and relying on their instincts. They may eat small animals, insects, plants, and garbage if available. Many lost dogs also find regular sources of food, like outdoor pet food left on porches or barns, farms with scraps, or areas where people leave food out for wildlife.

If you are in the path of dangerous storms, be sure you and your animal companions are ready to act. Here are some tips to help you prepare:

1. Create an Emergency Kit – Include food, water, medications, first aid supplies, medical history, vaccination records, toys and bedding.

2. ID and Microchip – Ensure your pet’s ID tags are up to date and their microchip registration is current.

3. Have an Evacuation Plan – Identify pet-friendly shelters and hotels in advance. Have carriers, leashes, collars ready. Create a backup plan in case you're not home during an emergency.

4. Use the Buddy System – Arrange with a trusted neighbor or friend to take care of your pets if you’re not home.

5. Stay Informed – Sign up for emergency alerts and follow local news for updates.

Did Your Dog Get Scared By Fireworks? Don’t Panic!
If your dog went missing from the sound of fireworks – don’t panic. Immediately put out your dog’s favorite blanket, some food and water, and something that smells like you (a dirty sock or pillowcase). Then file a report from this link: https://.petfbi.org
You will be able to create a free flyer and social media links to share. Your flyer will be automatically shared on our sister pages in the appropriate state.
Tell EVERYONE – to not call or chase or whistle to your dog. Let him relax and he may very likely come home on his own when it is quiet. Do NOT let people congregate in your yard or driveway. Your dog is frightened and will stay in hiding until everything calms down.

A sad reminder of why you should never take your dog to a fireworks event.
"Russell said Hudson was trained to hunt ducks and was accustomed to the sound of gunshots, but the fireworks proved to be a different beast for the golden retriever's senses. We had [Hudson] … leashed up. When the fireworks started, he got spooked and he took off towards the water, and never to be seen again."
"I didn't realize the flight mode that an animal would go into, so before we reached out to everyone, we were just yelling his name frantically, trying to bring him back," Russell said. "He had such great recall and we just thought once he got far enough away from the sound that as long as he heard our voice he'd come back to us.
"The brain just doesn't work like that in a dog. It needs to calm down, it needs to feel safe and it doesn't even realize that you're calling its name."

The last time Kelly Russell and her family saw their golden retriever, Hudson, was at a campground on P.E.I.'s North Shore on Canada Day in 2023.Russell, who's from Miramichi, N.B., had just settled in at Twin Shores Campground with her daughter, her partner, and Hudson, who was nine months old at t...
