Lost dogs being hit by a train is our third most common cause of death ( #1 - Hit by a car, #2 - Drowning). Why do so many dogs get hit by a train? Although we don't know for absolute certain we do know that shy lost dogs use train tracks to travel quietly and quickly between locations. Train tracks are usually level and provide the lost dog with an easy walking path where they can avoid humans. Also railroad tracks provide an easy food source for hungry lost dogs. Wild animals are frequently hit and killed by trains so lost dogs may be attracted to the carcasses to eat.

If your dog is missing make sure you thoroughly check out the possibility that they could be travelling the train tracks in your community. But remember, railroad tracks are private property and it is illegal to trespass and dangerous to walk on them. By the time a locomotive engineer sees a trespasser or vehicle on the tracks it's too late. It can take a mile or more to stop a train.

Instead, contact your local railroad yard office to give them a flyer and inquire if they have any information about your missing dog. Consider where the tracks lead and flyer the towns along the line in both directions.

Never Give Up! Until you have confirmed proof that your dog is deceased, continue your search. Your dog is relying on YOU to bring him safely home.

Newly adopted dogs and foster dogs may be shy, fearful, or stressed by the changes in their lives and at high risk for running away. If your new adoptee or foster is missing, here are some tips:

Appeal to their sense of smell – Put out scent articles such as the dog’s bed, crate, toys, and clothing from the person most bonded with the dog. If the dog is not yet bonded with you, ask the shelter, rescue, or previous foster to provide items. Place the scent articles somewhere safe along with strong smelling food and water.

Spread the word – Distribute flyers and use intersection signs to alert passing motorists. Post on social media and the Pet FBI database.

Do NOT chase – Instruct everyone helping you to NOT call, whistle, approach, or pursue your dog. If you see your dog, immediately sit down and toss a few tasty treats out around you. Be patient and speak softly or not at all.

Keep your pets safe this holiday season with these six tips. 🐈🐕❄️

1. Avoid Hazardous Foods - Keep chocolate, alcohol, grapes, raisins, and other holiday treats out of reach. Limit table scraps and stick to pet-friendly treats.
2. Secure Decorations - Use pet-safe ornaments and secure trees to prevent tipping. Avoid tinsel, which can be harmful if swallowed. Hide electrical cords and never leave lit candles unattended around curious pets.
3. Mindful with Plants - Keep poinsettias, holly, and mistletoe away from pets—they’re toxic.
4. Provide a Safe Space - With guests and noise, ensure pets have a quiet area to retreat and relax. Keep pets indoors during New Year's Eve fireworks or other loud events.
5. Secure Fencing and Gates - To prevent accidental escapes, check doors, fences, and gates to be sure they are secure.
6. ID is Key - Make sure your pet is wearing an ID tag and their microchip registration is up to date.

Lost dogs often survive by finding natural food sources, scavenging, and relying on their instincts. They may eat small animals, insects, plants, and garbage if available. Many lost dogs also find regular sources of food, like outdoor pet food left on porches or barns, farms with scraps, or areas where people leave food out for wildlife.
