Dog training isn’t always fun… sometimes it’s very boring. Sometimes it entails sitting on a bench for 30 minutes while a dog socializes at a park. Socialization isn’t about letting your dog play with other dogs and people, this is only a small part of it. Socialization is about letting your dog take in new experiences, places, smells, and sounds. Zagreus was out socializing at the part today. He saw some geese, other dogs, people fishing, and heard a baby cry for the first time.
Talvi practiced heeling with her handler’s wheelchair today. She has previously been weary of motorized carts at the grocery store, so we thought she may need multiple sessions to learn this. However, today was a walk in the park for her. A little desensitization and she was ready to go!
Talvi has been working on anxiety alerts. She alerts by pawing at her handler. Today, she practiced at a store that was busy. I don’t allow my dogs to eat off of store floors, so if a treat is dropped they are required to leave it. In this video, Talvi ate a treat that was dropped off the floor. This just shows we need to work on leaving dropped food alone. However, she did great with practicing alerts and DPT.
Ava visited one of our local parks that has a mountain bike course. Nobody was riding the trials, so I took the opportunity to desensitize her to the obstacles. She walked up the ramps with no hesitation. This is a very important step in her training that cannot be overlooked. Ava will certainly encounter obstacles that she will need to jump and climb over as a search and rescue dog.
Talvi learns so quick! At this point in her training, she is learning how to confidently walk past strangers, the touch command, and heel.
Lilo is starting to grasp the concept of intelligent disobedience. Intelligent disobedience occurs when a service dog goes directly against their handler’s commands in order to make a better decision. This requires them to think on their own.
Lilo practiced asthma alerts with her handler today. We are so proud of how far she has come since starting task training!
It has been a few weeks since Lilo has started task training along with more advanced public access outings. She has so much drive and motivation!
She is still working on her heel. At times, Lilo gets very excited to be working and walks too fast. Her “stay” has come very far within a month. It feels like just yesterday she was learning her name and now she’s learning how to mitigate her handler’s disabilities!
Lilo is learning how to alert to oncoming asthma attacks by giving a paw when she hears coughing.
Roux has been working on his off- leash skills. His focus is phenomenal for just turning 8 months old.
Lola is discovering how fun leaves can be!
Due to dogs being den animals, they naturally feel more secure in small spaces. Crating a dog when left alone can reduce anxiety, destructive behaviors, and keep them safe overall. At GBCA we incorporate praise, treats, and toys into crate training so the dogs can develop a positive association with the crate. Roux loves to fetch his toys that are thrown into the crate!
