Happy 4th of July!
We strive to improve the owner and dog’s relationship through communication and balanced training.
Happy 4th of July!
I just want to thank all my amazing clients for helping me through this rough time. Most of you know by now that I lost my personal dog who was a retired service dog two weeks ago. It was the hardest decision of my life to put him down, but I couldn’t be selfish and let him suffer. Again, I just want to thank everyone for giving me time to heal and checking in!
With Easter around the corner, make sure to keep plants away from your pets!
I have the best clients! My clients got me this sign today!😊
Brrrr it’s COLD! No better time to start potty training! Riley will be staying with me for 3 weeks to kick start potty training and crate training. He will also be starting to learn some other basic commands like his name and marker words.
I have the best clients! Everyone has been so supportive and understanding throughout my service dog’s diagnosis. One of my clients got my boys cookies from . I can’t thank everyone enough through this hard time.
Auggie did wonderful during his private training session today! Auggie is working on leash manners, markers, and socialization. He has so much motivation and focus!
Poppie did so well at her private training session. We are working on introducing marker words, crate training, and luring. Poppie is only 1.2 pounds at 11 weeks old!
Happy Thanksgiving!
Kasper and Finnegan are still looking for homes! These two have been pulled from the service dog program. Kasper went through a really rough fear period and hasn’t overcame it. He is shy around new people but once he warms up he is a really sweet and active dog. Finn used to nip when being groomed but through a lot of work he had been overcoming that. Last grooming session, Finn didn’t try to nip at all!
DO NOT BUY CHEAP ECOLLARS! This is why you spend the extra money and buy a quality ecollar rather than a $30 ecollar. Quality ecollars ($200+ new) will not do this. They are definitely worth the extra money. Good brands include, Garmin, Ecollar Technologies, and Dogtra. If you have questions regarding brands you should use please feel free to message the page.
Diggy did phenomenal when we went to Home Depot to train the other day. He worked around the Christmas decorations and rolling carts. Some of the decorations were moving and singing and he didn’t even care.
Happy Halloween from the GBCA pups! These pups have been working hard on their training. We have been working slowly on desensitization to Halloween decorations without overwhelming them.
Diggy is doing fantastic with his training. Today we worked on learning deep pressure therapy, come, and heel. This boy is always so eager to learn!
GBCA’s website is now published!
Unleashing Potential. Who are we? GBCA is a balanced dog training business based out of Toledo, OH. Private Dog Training We provide local private lessons, with a balanced...
The dogs were all busy training today! Ivy went to the craft store and TJ Maxx. She practiced heeling and focusing. Diggy went to the park and practiced heeling as well as laying down on command.
I am still looking for a Type 1 Diabetic Patient for my Diabetic Alert Dog Program. Ideally, this patient will be local to Toledo. However, this doesn’t have to be the case as scent samples can be shipped on ice. If you or someone you know is interested in the Diabetic Alert Dog Program please message GBCA.
All three of my boys got personal bests this past weekend! We had dock diving and fast CAT. Watson broke his personal record and ran 100 yards at 20.09 MPH. Koda got a personal best at dock diving at 11’9! Kenai also got a personal best at dock diving jumping 6’6! So proud of these boys!
Thank you to all who helped me get through this past week! I am truly grateful to have such supportive clients and partners. I am out of the hospital and back training. Please message me if you need to schedule a session!
Diabetic Alert Client Opportunity
I am opening up a spot for a special client at a discounted price. I am hoping to find a client that is willing to have me train my first diabetic alert service dog. Although I have never trained for this specially to date, I do have scent work experience with my one golden retriever who now has various AKC scent work titles. In the near future I am also hoping to attend a narcotics detection program. As I have not trained for diabetic alert specifically I am offering this program at a discounted rate from my normal service dog program. If you, or someone you know, may benefit from a diabetic alert dog and is interesting in this program, please reach out to us either via messaging the page or text or call us at 567-318-3631 to discuss in more detail. We hope to hear from you soon!
Did you know that 26% of adults in the United States have some type of disability? If that disability limits one or more major life activities then you may qualify for a service dog under the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act.) Service dogs significantly help the lives of their handlers through task work that is trained specifically for them. Tasks can include alerting to high or low blood sugar levels, alerting to anxiety, crowd control to mitigate PTSD, deep pressure therapy during a panic attack, turning off the lights, opening doors, ect. If you or someone you know is interested in applying for a service dog, please contact GBCA at (567)-318-3631.
Kasper has been working hard on overcoming his fear period. We are working on building confidence and desensitizing to things he finds scary. He is slowly taking steps in the right direction!
Finn is a 1 year old Rough Collie looking for a home! He does have some training. He is up to date on vaccinations.
Finnagen, or Finn, is a 1 year old Rough Collie who is being pulled from my service dog in training program. Finn is no longer a service dog candidate as he will occasionally try to nip when being brushed. He especially does not like slicker brushes. Extensive desensitization has gone into grooming sessions. He was doing a lot better for a period of time and has regressed again. With more desensitization and lots of patience, Finnagen could do very well during grooming sessions. Finn is very patient in the bath and does very well when being dried with the force dryer.
Finn loves to counter surf and find food. For this reason, I think Finn would excel at scent work.
Finn has been to a variety of places out in public for training. I rent property on a farm where I house my dogs so he has been exposed to chickens, goats, cows, small animals, other dogs, and cats. He will bark in his crate occasionally, especially if he can’t get settled. Finn knows touch, sit, down with luring, luring, yes marker, free marker, and no marker. Finn is working on stay, wait, come, leave it, and has a pretty good heel.
Finnagen has been one of my more difficult dogs to potty train. He will do absolutely amazing some days and have accidents on other days. When I am being diligent about keeping an eye on him and taking him out every two hours, he does great (this is hard with all my dogs sometimes!) He will pace very quickly right before he has to go potty.
Finn has a low - medium food drive and a low- medium toy drive depending on the day. The toy has to be moving and engaging for him to want to play with it. He could play with a flirt pole for hours. He will chase a ball, but usually won’t attempt to bring it back.
He is up to date on all vaccines and not neutered. If you have questions about his training or are interested please message Golden Behavior Canine Academy at (567)-318-3631.
Happy Fourth of July! 🇺🇸
My personal dogs had a busy weekend! Watson and Koda both participated in fast cat and then Koda went on to dock diving. Watson got his personal best in fast cat this weekend, while Koda got his personal best in dock diving at 8’10”. Koda also earned his DCAT. I’m so proud of these two! We had to reorganize the ribbon wall after this weekend.
Talvi May brushed up on some skills at Target yesterday. Even when a dog is trained, it’s important to keep working on skills they know to keep them sharp!
Ivy and Kasper enjoyed a day at the park. The both practiced their loose leash walking and basic obedience. We also did some confidence building on various big rocks and bridges. Both dogs did phenomenal!

Dog training isn’t always fun… sometimes it’s very boring. Sometimes it entails sitting on a bench for 30 minutes while a dog socializes at a park. Socialization isn’t about letting your dog play with other dogs and people, this is only a small part of it. Socialization is about letting your dog take in new experiences, places, smells, and sounds. Zagreus was out socializing at the part today. He saw some geese, other dogs, people fishing, and heard a baby cry for the first time.
Talvi practiced heeling with her handler’s wheelchair today. She has previously been weary of motorized carts at the grocery store, so we thought she may need multiple sessions to learn this. However, today was a walk in the park for her. A little desensitization and she was ready to go!
Talvi has been working on anxiety alerts. She alerts by pawing at her handler. Today, she practiced at a store that was busy. I don’t allow my dogs to eat off of store floors, so if a treat is dropped they are required to leave it. In this video, Talvi ate a treat that was dropped off the floor. This just shows we need to work on leaving dropped food alone. However, she did great with practicing alerts and DPT.
Ava visited one of our local parks that has a mountain bike course. Nobody was riding the trials, so I took the opportunity to desensitize her to the obstacles. She walked up the ramps with no hesitation. This is a very important step in her training that cannot be overlooked. Ava will certainly encounter obstacles that she will need to jump and climb over as a search and rescue dog.
Talvi learns so quick! At this point in her training, she is learning how to confidently walk past strangers, the touch command, and heel.
Lilo is starting to grasp the concept of intelligent disobedience. Intelligent disobedience occurs when a service dog goes directly against their handler’s commands in order to make a better decision. This requires them to think on their own.
Lilo practiced asthma alerts with her handler today. We are so proud of how far she has come since starting task training!
It has been a few weeks since Lilo has started task training along with more advanced public access outings. She has so much drive and motivation! She is still working on her heel. At times, Lilo gets very excited to be working and walks too fast. Her “stay” has come very far within a month. It feels like just yesterday she was learning her name and now she’s learning how to mitigate her handler’s disabilities!
Roux has been working on his off- leash skills. His focus is phenomenal for just turning 8 months old.
Due to dogs being den animals, they naturally feel more secure in small spaces. Crating a dog when left alone can reduce anxiety, destructive behaviors, and keep them safe overall. At GBCA we incorporate praise, treats, and toys into crate training so the dogs can develop a positive association with the crate. Roux loves to fetch his toys that are thrown into the crate!
