Recall (coming when called) should, like all Commands, be responded to without decision-making. When the dog is trained to respond to Command properly, their response is a muscle reflex. We achieve this through direct conditioning practices.

Recall is one of the most important aspects of having a truly trained dog. When taught properly, there is no need for emotionality or hierarchy-based instruction from the handler & the dog responds properly with willingness and ease.

Through control comes freedom. The more you can trust your dog, the more free they can be. The more trained the dog is, the less you have to tell them.

True recall (coming when called) is one of the most important things to train. When you achieve a muscle reflex (and NOT a decision-based response) from the dog, you know that you can call the dog out of any situation and trust that the dog will come to you. Proper concept introduction and a clear/balanced relationship is absolutely vital in this aspect of training. Once achieved, life for both the dog and handler becomes unbelievably more enjoyable. •

There’s A LOT that we’re working on here with Grizzly. One thing that you will notice is that he’s on a longline. This dog can still be impulsive so until he’s completely trained he’s on the longline for safety. One other reason he’s on the longline is that we are working on getting reflex response with my commands. Once the dog is trained to not make decisions when receiving commands and operates on pure muscle reflex, we know that we can take them into pretty much any situation and steer the outcome.
Increasing Grizzly’s self-control is directly related to command & response. You’ll notice here that I am using “fetch” as a mechanism for physical and mental work. I want to make sure that I am getting immediate & proper response from the dog while also keeping this work fun and interesting for him.
The main goal here is to expand on his mental and physical work while increasing his obedience at the same time. •
