McKee's Pet of the Week

The Ferret (Mustela putorius furo)

Description:
The ferret is the domesticated form of the European polecat. They are mammals belonging to the same genus as the weasel.

Length: about 14 inches.
Weight: 1-3.5 lbs.
Lifespan: about 9-10 years.

Diet:
They are carnivores and need a high protein food source. A food that is specially formulated for ferrets is best.

Cage Requirements:
It is important to provide lots of climbing space for ferrets since they love to climb. A cage that is 2 feet by 3 feet and 3 to 6 feet tall is sufficient for one or two ferrets. Provide hammocks and shelves at different levels in the cage to prevent the ferret from falling from the top of the cage straight to the bottom.

Fascinating Facts:
1. Ferrets are natives of Africa.
2. Ferrets are used to hunt rabbits.
3. Females are jills, males are hobs, and babies are called kits.
4. A group of ferrets is called a business.
