Here's Jojo today. I thought I was going to lose her at one point. I believe that not only her high nutrition food and medicine played a part in saving her but so did our relationship. I treat the whole bird, love and connection are important. She regained a nice amount of weight

Jackie always chooses a nut first. Gracie goes for the red sweet seasonal fruits first, right now Pomegranate. Tooky is a switch hitter: sometimes it's a nut, or a red pepper, today it was corn

Update on Churchie

04/10/2020

Another update on Charlie Churchie. His personality is starting to come through now

25/09/2020

Among other things that I feed the birds are foods such as kale, spinach, zucchini, cucumber, sweet potato, Etc. I also feed them cooked frozen vegetables that we are eating. I save some before they are seasoned. I give them things such as broccoli, cauliflower, legumes, peas, sweet potato white potatoes Etc. Since the cold weather is coming I will also begin to make their bird bread again. I used lots of Frozen things to make these bird breads, or bird bars, I include the eggs shells in the breads. In addition to this, occasionally I cook whole grains such as wheat, oats, or barley and added that to the tops of their bowls. About once a month I add cooked eggs, shredded chicken, or small chicken bones

Another update on Charlie Churchie. He decided to make his debut today

A check up on Charlie Churchill. I gave him 2 names because half of the time I call him Charlie for some reason unknown to me

We have a new permanent resident. Churchill 'Churchie' for short. Church is has one leg. He was a breder bird. His first owner put him and his mate in a cage with macaws. The result was Churchie's mate was killed. Church lost his foot and his face was gashed open when his second owner saw him and bought him. Churchie's second owners says Churchie was dying with heavy labored breathing. Churchie survived physically but emotionally he is mostly closed off. His unfortunate accident was 5months ago. He resucer and second owner realized Churchie needs more than he can give the parrot.

I will be documenting the progress of Churchie the eclectus over the next year.

There are some days that you need to do what is good for your parrots even if it's not what they want. This is where trust and relationship with your birds play a vile part of your lives together. I can place my hands inside of each cage without threat of being bit. Nothing is ever forced on them unless there is a true emergency and they know those times, they sense it from you when they have that kind of relationship with you.

Here in Israel we have had extreme temperature over the last few days and they are predicted to continue for a while. My sanctuary is currently in a part of my house that was built for indoor-outdoor living. There is zero insulation and it has huge gaps in the exterior doors.

Because of these factors my decision was to keep them cages until the heat breaks because yesterday the portable a/c unit was not doing the job.

I have them close together. The backs of their cages are draped with layers of bedsheets. The portable unit is in the center with a fan behind pushing them the cold air. It's working well.

Yes, they would rather have their normal freedom from sun up to sun down. But I rather know that they will remain cool enough to survive

Wonderful news.

Good morning. I realize it's been a long time since I've posted to this page. That's probably not going to change in the foreseeable future but I'm still here with the parrots.

Today, I have a moment and wanted to show you what a difference a year of good nutrition can make in a parrot.

Gracie came to stay at the end of June 2019. Compare her feather at the time of her arrival, how light grey they were. It was shocking when I saw her she was ghost grey. Today she is a beautiful deep grey, almost black on her feather tips. With a brilliant red tail.

What's her success? Soaked seeds, no pellets and the atleast 'seven rule'. Seven rule: at least a daily variety of three fruit and four vegetables or four vegetable and three fruits.

Today there is mangold/chard, green and red pepper, cucumber, apple, pear, green and red grapes, cauliflower, and plums. A variety of 10 fresh foods.

It's all about the colors of the fresh foods, lots of colors in their food make for beautiful feather.

We can see the same with the Quaker named Tookie. Tookie's mom and Dad did a GREAT job. But flock life has added interest and competition into Tookie's life and this has benefited Tookie. Picky Tookie now eats everything the African Greys eat and her feathers are more brilliant.

In the video I caught Lorie grinding her beak which is a sign of a very happy Grey. Another way she's telling me she is happy is by the feathers that are regrowing and she is allowing to remain without pulling them. I counted about 30 new feathers coming in on her chest and belly.

I'm so happy that she is feeling so much better

Lorie continues to adjust to her new home. Ten years is a long time to be with a family and then need to learn a new enviroment. We have had only one glitch. Jako had a scare and after he flew climbed up on Lorie's cage. Since Lorie can't see she relies highly on the direction that sounds come at her from. So I needed to brake up a bird fight between blind Lorie and one eyed Jako. Thankfully their strikes at each were missing by a few inches but it bought me a good bite out of Lorie who didn't know what she was biting she was just guarding her territory.

In this video you will see her with her toy. She can't always find it with her mouth but it doesn't stop her from having fun

Please consider donating the link is in the video description. Please share the video to your timeline and other parrot or animal groups you belong to. Thanks

The new arrival came today. Lorie. She is the sweetest 10-year-old girl....but....she is blind. I'm not even sure her owners knew this. One thing is for sure they loved her and cried when they left her with me.

If an African Grey is acclimated to their cage and surrounding you might not know or notice something isn't right. They kept telling me 'she is scared'. No, those big eyes are not full of fear they are without vision.

Lorie doesn't turn her head towards movements. She does not look at objects. She searches for things with an open beak. If she hears a noise she turns her head towards the noise. She can even be touched and doesn't know that you are going to touch her. No wonder she is a feather plucker. She breaks my heart.

Lorie will be here forever. With time, trust, and patience I hope to make her world a happier, safer place in which she will thrive.

It's going to be ok Lorie you are home now.

The owners of Lorie did donate NIS200 about $56 that will be saved towards the HEPA filter that's needed for the bird-room. The HEPA filter is $245. Please consider donating and share this post. Thank you for caring.

Jako arrived today. I don't know much about the history of this Grey other than he/she has a blind left eye from an eye infection. Beautiful bird. His feathers say a lot about his health.
