Dogs, like people, love to get away from it all! Why not bring your dog hill walking but remember that dogs like humans need some training before going on a walking adventure. Fitness doesn’t come overnight, so start the process well before your trip. At any time of year, remember to pack enough water for you and your dog.

Did you know dogs do dream. Dogs and humans have the same type of slow wave sleep SWS and rapid eye movement REM. Twitching and paw movements during REM indicate they are dreaming.

These dogs are a lifeline to people........ but that others are as fortunate as us

Some Very Sad news!

Following a meeting this morning it was decided to close our waiting list. This decision was a hard one to make however due to the fact that our income from collection has been cut by between 30-40% we have been left with no choice as this is a main source of income for us. It is truly unfair that our charity and other charities like us have been the victims of other larger charities behaviours and in turn affecting the trust and goodwill of the public. We receive no government funding and only have a few months reserves unlike many charities having years of reserves sitting in bank accounts often in the millions.

We will however continue to provide assistance dogs to those currently on our 5 year waiting list. If you can HELP please get in touch as only with your help can we change this situation.

With Spring now truly in the air, remember that with warmer weather fleas can now become an issue for your dog. Fleas are truly devoted to their work. In one day, a single flea can bite your cat or dog more than 400 times.
Spot on flea prevention treatments are easy to apply and provide about one months flea protection for your dog and are available in pet shops. Remember your local vet will be able to help you with any queries.

Puppy Training : Remember, training is not about dominating our pets, it's about communicating with them. ---Plan to devote 10-15 minutes every day to training. Puppies get bored very easily so make sure you keep them entertained or enthused in the training. This should create good results.

Keep your dog occupied on a rainy day and make him house proud with the "Put it away" Game

How to play :
This game is easy — just scatter the toys all over the house and have your dog find each one and put it away in a basket to earn a reward. Start out by first training your dog to know what "put it away" means. Work on teaching your dog to pick up a toy, carry it to a basket or box, and drop it in the box. This alone will be a fun challenge for both of you if you're new to this trick. Then to play the game, scatter a bunch of toys in a small area, point to one and say "put it away" until all the toys are back in their basket. Increase the difficulty of the game as your dog gets better at it by scattering the toys farther around the room, scattering them throughout multiple rooms, or even hiding them!

The great escape ...please keep your eyes peeled for Lachlan.

Lachlan escaped from his foster home in Moycullen this evening - he was last spotted on the Moycullen to Spiddal Road. He managed to escape through a hole in the gate that you wouldn't imagine a jack russell could fit through, never mind a collie the size of Lachlan. He bolted and there was no turning back once this boy got a taste of the freedom he had been pining for since he came into our care with his leg injury over Xmas. We think he may have gone back to where he had been living as a semi-feral dog in the Barna area, so we ask those of you in the area to keep an eye out for him. Lachlan was a resourceful boy before he came to us, having lived as a bit of free spirit, so hopefully we will be able to track him down over the coming days and take him back into our care. If you do see Lachlan please text Marina on 086 8149026 and leave some food and water out for him.

Remember Guys a tired dog is generally a good dog! Dogs need physical exercise. The average dog benefits from a minimum of two outings per day. If left to their own devices, dogs tend to be most active morning and evening, choosing to sleep mid-day.

Here's a great game to challenge your dog intellectually.
DIY Muffin Tin Dog Brain Game

Simply put small training treats or pieces of kibble in a muffin tin and place tennis balls or other balls of similar size on top. Your pet then must figure out how to remove the balls to get the treats. The difficulty level is also fairly easy, making it a good beginner game.

Recent research has shown that dogs can actually see in colour, but do not see the colours as bright or distintive as humans, this is because we have 3 colour senses cones in our eyes and dogs only have two

With the weather pretty miserable outside here's a lovely quote to warm the heart -
"For me a house or an apartment becomes a home when you add one set of four legs, a happy tail, and that indescribable measure of love that we call a dog." ~ Roger Caras

Contrary to popular belief dogs do not know naturally how to swim and need to be taught this skill. When teaching use the same patience and encouragement as when teaching him any new skill. Remember every dog is different and some will take to swimming with more enthusiasm than others. Ideally start by introducing your dog to shallow calm water and go into the water with him. Make sure your dog is safe at all times a life jacket is an excellent safety measure.
