Here in Louisiana, our leaves really don’t change. They die, then they fall. So I’m pretty excited about how beautiful the trees are getting. Granted, it’s December…not fall. 🍁 🍃 🍂
IYKYK 🤦🏼♀️ We all start somewhere and there is no judgement here for people still learning! But I’ve seen way too many posts from people who do this as a way of operation.
To borrow the words of a farmer with more years experience than I have alive - it works until it doesn’t.
1) Sows DO come back into heat within weeks of farrowing and a boar WILL rebreed them immediately. Thats dangerous for the sow! I’ve seen sows who could not get back into condition after continuous nursing/breeding. I’ve seen sows suffer from uterine prolapse and had to be put down due to repeated breeding.
2) Pigs housed together can get friend zoned. Not every case but it does happen frequently.
3) You have zero control over when your sow will be bred or farrow and chances are you won’t have an idea of the due date.
Everyone has their own way, and I am sure several farms will say it works best for them. But I don’t believe it is the BEST breeding practice and that’s what I work for here, what’s BEST for the pigs and the breed.

The very last of our livestock guardian pups is still looking for a home for the holidays. She’s well started with training. She stays with the piglets at night and is very protective of them.
We would love to bless a military or first responder (active or retired) farm with this sweet girl. She is available to other good homes at a reduced rehoming fee. PM for more information.

Thought I would share one of my favorite kunekune pork recipes!
Pork Eggroll in a Bowl
1lb of ground kunekune pork (you COULD use another pork or beef, but why would you???)
2 bags shredded cole slaw cabbage
Low Sodium Soy Sauce
Seasonings - garlic, ginger, pepper to taste, can use fresh or dried
Brown ground pork, and drain if necessary. Add about 3 tablespoons of soy sauce, cabbage and seasoning. Stir together. Reduce heat to medium and cover pot with lid to cook/steam cabbage stirring occasionally until cabbage is soft.
This recipe is so flexible! You can add any additional veggies you like, carrot shreds, baby corn, etc. Top them with fried wonton strips. Serve it on top of ramen. Lots of possibilities. Even my youngest who is very particular about veggies asks for this all the time!

Do you know where your meat comes from or what’s in it?? We have local, pasture raised, heritage pork available.
Kunekunes are a small, heritage breed, grazing pig that provide a flavorful pork! The meat is dark and marbled and they provide a beautiful lard, a clean fat for cooking and baking, as well as crafting. We have three pigs, around 200lbs each, ready to process. We take care of everything, you just pick up your meat from the processor!

Headlines today about meat production are increasingly disturbing. Thats one of the many reasons we are raising our Kunekunes. They are wonderful, and cute. But they also provide our family with healthy, ethically raised, pastured pork. There are no growth hormones, or farrowing cages. Even pigs raised to be processed have sunshine, mud wallows, open spaces, and the best life we can provide. Thats a huge part of WHY we farm!

As the number of Kunekunes in the United States grows, it’s becoming easier to find them closer to home. When we started there were literally 2 people with registered pigs in the STATE!
I still see the importance of traveling a bit or transporting in new pigs. If we are buying and selling to our immediate neighbors, we end up like Family Dollar and Dollar General, selling the exact same things next door to each other.
We’ve gone on some crazy adventures to bring pigs home! 9 hours one way to bring home a trio, 4 hours having to stop almost hourly to get after and cool the pigs because it was so hot! But I don’t know if anything beats 8 hours home with a grown boar in the back seat.
What are your thoughts? Are you willing to travel to bring home the right pig? Or have it transported to you? How far have you gone to get that perfect porcine? Any funny stories you’d like to share?

Holy cow! 🐮 I told you Ivy’s babies were big?!?! All of them weighed in over 2lbs. The smallest was 2 lbs 6 oz. The largest is 2 lbs 11.8 oz!! 🏋🏼
One year and one week, exactly to the day since we brought Ivy home. Since we made it Facebook official, she didn’t want to wait any more!
Welcome Ivy’s litter! 4 very robust gilts!! They are sired by our very first retained pig, Binx. And this will be his last litter as we are retiring him. Ivy did an amazing job of farrowing piglets this size for a first time sow. ❤️🐽🥰

During the summer, we were so disappointed when Ivy miscarried. We bred her back the next cycle and we’ve held our breath!

LOCAL FOLLOWERS - We NEED URGENT help! This guy made his way into our animal pen yesterday. We kept him in a cage in the garage overnight to get him to animal control. But the shelter is full and will not take him. With all our dogs and livestock, we physically can not keep him. He NEEDS help! He is missing all his front teeth, we are assuming due to malnutrition. If anyone local could foster until animal control will take him, or if you know a rescue, please let us know ASAP!

Following up on the Retriever dog food recall - I as ASSURED by this TFP Nutrition / Texas Farm Products employee that the contaminated products were pulled from the stores BY October 19th. But someone in Jena, LA commented that their store didn't pull the dog food until YESTERDAY, November 14th! The store in Amite, LA was just NOTIFIED TODAY to pull their product! But yet they want to tell me that there is NO WAY that I got contaminated food when we purchased the bags on October 20 and November 3??? 😡😡😡

PLEASE check your dog food if you use Retriever Brand dog food from Tractor Supply. One of our dogs is at the vet right now and they think this is probably the cause. Our store never even put up a recall notice. If your store doesn't have a notice up, PLEASE speak to the manager!

Hydration is key when it’s hot outside! 🥵 ☀️ Disclaimer- Gatorade is not recommended for pigs in any large quantities! It has a lot of sodium which can be dangerous to pigs especially if they are dehydrated. Edna was just being super cute! And she had some water right after. If you suspect that your pig is dehydrated or overheated, move them to a shady area with good air flow, offer water, sodium free electrolytes, or fruit with high water content. Never spray cold water on any animal that’s overheated- it can send them into shock.
We did our good deed for the day! Because of all the rain, frogs had decided that the water collected on our pool cover made a good nursery. So we carefully collected as many of the tadpoles as we could catch and moved them out to the pond. They will probably be duck food in the pond. But we did our best! 🤷🏼♀️ 🦆 🐸
Boys will be boys. This is what it can look like when you’ve got boars showing off. Seminole, on the left, has been in the breeding pen with his lady and the boar pen was all jealous. Boars release pheromones from glands in their mouth and legs so you will often see boars chomping and frothing or “patty-caking” to spread their scent.

Peaches went on an adventure last night! The Natchitoches Central Tribal Fire Colorguard had a kiss the pig fundraiser. NCHS Principal Coach Coleman got the most donations and had to give Peaches a little 💋 We do it for free all the time! Peaches was a wonderful breed ambassador and enjoyed all the extra attention. Thanks for having us Chiefs!
