Bunny Rabbit

Bunny Rabbit "Bunny Rabbit" is a wild Desert Cottontail that happened upon our backyard around July 2016 and beca He became a regular visitor much to my delight.

Backstory:
This page is dedicated to a wild neighborhood Cottontail rabbit who wandered into our backyard in mid summer 2016. I don't know whether Bunny is a he or a she. We suspected it was a he and for the sake of this page I'll refer to bunny as a he. From day 1 my intention was to not to feed, tame or shape his character in any way. I wanted him to stay wild and come and go as he pleased. I n

amed him "Bunny Rabbit" in tribute to the famous character puppet from the Captain Kangaroo children's TV show. I felt that was the least humanizing and most generic name possible. Bunny visited almost daily for nearly 1 year. Last spotted in the yard on May 17th, 2017 coincidentally it was during an unseasonably hot spell. He vacated his usual napping spot in the shade. He was then spotted in the front yard on May 23rd munching a little grass in our side yard then wandering over to where we suspect he had his den. I will always remember fondly the time I spent watching and visiting Bunny. He liked to relax and nap in front of the deck close to where I sat. At night he regularly moved to a spot on the grass directly in front of the kitchen window. I swear he did it to peak inside as it got pitch dark. As an orphan I like to believe he enjoyed the company. I felt a sort of responsibility to welcome and spend time with him and it was totally a pleasure doing so. I suspected he would not be around too long so I wanted to spend as much time around him as possible. It's not everyday that a wild animal chooses to spend his time in one's own yard. I like to believe he enjoyed and felt safe there. What happened to Bunny and why did he suddenly disappear? That's the million $ question and I don't have anything but a couple of theories. He was healthy and happy the last time I saw him. Other than scratching more often than usual. Possibly due to lawn fleas or ticks? The weather was unseasonably HOT that week with temps hitting mid 90's so it could have been that. However, he was here the last summer even during the heat spells. My best guess is that he was looking to mate. Bunnies do what bunnies do right? My wife and I noticed several cottontails at the local church and across the street from the church at a closed down golf course. Some where juvenile (although weened) and a couple were mature. The time of the year fits the mating theory. Will he / she return? I hope so but have no idea. I miss Bunny !

I want to thank everyone who stopped by here to visit Bunny Rabbit. It has been a fantastic journey but all good things must come to an end at some point. Bunny stopped coming around a couple of years ago and I can only assume that it was his time to visit the giant bunny playground in the sky. I'm glad we got to spend over 7 years with our visiting wild cottontail. The average lifespan of a cottontail in the wild is 2 years or less. Even today, I still look to see if he is around whenever I'm in the yard. It's a hard habit to break. This page lives on and there are plenty of pics and video that I haven't gotten around to posting. Stay tuned.

Poem: The Girl with Golden Hair
Artist: Ronald Bowser

Note: Ronald is a Bunny Besties Community member and we are honored to share his art and poetry. ❤️

The bunny loves the girl with golden hair, For she is kind and gentle, sweet and fair, She gives him treats and strokes his fur, And never once does she make him stir.

She talks to him with a soothing voice, And makes his little bunny heart rejoice, For in her presence he feels at ease, And all his worries and fears do freeze.

So the bunny loves the girl with all his might, And stays by her side both day and night, For she is his friend, his world, his all, And without her, he'd be nothing at all.

Great news to report! After nearly a year with no backyard sighting guess who passed through this morning? Either Bunny or Peanut but not sure which.

A TBT favorite from a few years ago. While Bunny and Peanut have been no shows for the last 6 months I have seen a couple of bunnies down the street. Could be them. Not sure.

It’s been a while since my last posting and wanted to give an update to all you Bunny followers. It’s been at least 3-4 months since Bunny and Peanut have come around. That is an unusually long period. See no signs of munching on the grass which is always a good indicator. Bunny holes under the fence also look unused so I’m assuming they are not coming by at night either. Hopefully both are okay and relocated for whatever reason. We have seen two Bunny’s in the front yard about 8 houses away on another street. Could be them since ive not seen these two before. Unfortunately couldn’t get a pic as it’s on a busier street. Hopefully one or both will return. At my best guess Bunny is about 7 years old which is a long time for a wild cottontail. Till next update that’s it for now.

"You go" "No YOU go" Bunny demonstrating the freeze move. It's a self defense tactic and apparently also a deterrent to horses. LOL
