Introducing the newest recruit!

Norman joined the team before Christmas, he’s super cheeky, likes to check that I’m getting the admin done correctly but is often found sleeping on the job 🤦🏼‍♀️

Of course Neville is still the chief supervisor but hasn’t been thrilled about Norman’s work ethic…

Happy New Year! I’m a bit late to the party but it’s been a busy start to 2025! 🪩 🎆

I’ve visited some lovely horses already this year, Herrbee being one them. Can you believe he’ll be turning 20 soon?!

Herrbee has been feeling a bit stiff during this cold snap so we got him feeling a bit more comfortable and I’ll visit him again in a few weeks time. ❄️

Please get in touch if you need some advice on keeping your horses feeling good in the cold. I have limited availability left for January.

An old post but one worth revisiting !

Horses when felt to be strong are often placed in a ‘stronger’ bit.

The horse may be pulling, grabbing the bit, throwing their head in the air and running or bearing down on it.

A stronger bit, although sometimes needed isn’t always the answer.

Horses react to pressure and when a pressure in their mouth is causing them discomfort we often see some of the behaviors described above.

We would always encourage you to strip your bits and bridles back to basics.

Assess the horses mouth confirmation, is the bit suitable for your horses particular mouth confirmation ?

Would your horse be more comfortable in a different bit ?

Once your horse is in a bit that suits the conformation of its mouth the unwanted behavior should stop.

You may need a stronger cheekpiece for faster work but not always, often once comfortable they stop pulling against unwanted pressures and start to listen to the riders aids.

Once you know that your horse is comfortable in its mouthpiece you can introduce a stronger cheekpiece knowing that the mouthpiece is comfortable.

if you would like any advice please DM us or email us.

Winters here which means wet and muddy weather! 🌧️

I can completely appreciate how difficult it can be to keep your horse looking like a horse and not a hippo 🦛.

Here are some pointers to think about before I visit:

🐴 Pick your horses feet out
🐴 I can’t massage a wet horse so ensure they’ve had time to dry after turnout/being washed off
🐴 Brush as much mud off as possible
🐴 I’m happy for your horse to wear a little rug to keep them warm whilst I work on them
🐴 You can exercise your horse before I visit, but they need to be dry and have sweat brushed/washed off
🐴 Research has shown horses are more relaxed when they have a friend nearby, let them be near a friend if possible
🐴 I’m more than happy for your horse to be eating their forage whilst I’m with them

This will all help to prevent delays and ensure your horse is getting the best treatment possible! Get in touch if you have any concerns.

🤔 So we’ve spoken about the forelimb, but what about the hindlimb?

The muscles in the hind quarters create the motion and flexion needed for movement. But we already know that there are no muscles in the distal limb, so how does this move? 🏃‍♀️

The suspensory apparatus made up of tendons and ligaments is able to store energy and then release it to assist the hoof in leaving the ground.

🐎When you jump on a pogo stick you contract the spring (storing the energy) which then propels you back up off of the ground. The hindlimb of the horse works in the same way!

🤔 How many muscles are in the horses lower limb ❓

I asked this question a few days ago and the answer is….. 0! 😮

The horse has no muscles below their knee/hock joint, but they do have tendons and ligaments.

Did you answer correctly?
