Merry Christmas all and happy new year’s! We were planning to offer on farm training sessions for backyard chicken keeping, but with the rise in COVID cases, we decided to offer them online for free! This will also allow people to participate who do not live near to us. If the timing of this presentation doesn’t work for you, please message us as we expect to present this multiple times. Please feel free to share this post with your friends and family that you think may be interested. We hope we are able to present some thoughts, concepts and experiences and then open it to questions and answers.

The mature Barnevelder ladies out for a spring stroll among the flowers...after several months of laying for hatching eggs sales the breeding flock females gets a well deserved summer off of free ranging in the yard, while the Roosters are in their spacious loft bachelor pad in an old barn.

I’m in hatching mode and the sportsman has lots of space, so I can do custom hatches if you have fertile eggs or if you want a select numbers of birds 🐥 hatched out to a specific deadline. With lots of hatching experience, I get consistently good results with my own eggs 80-96% on average. Please note: Good hatching results depend on breeder health and diet of your breeder flock.

Going to put on a hatch this week, and will be selecting only the darkest eggs. I am Focusing on upping the ante on egg colour this year 😜 The cockerels from this hatch will pass on the dark egg laying genetics to their daughters.
Note: Eggs in the yellow turner are my silver Barnevelders that I just got last year and their egg colours generally are much lighter ... they need lots of work to get to the shade I want.

It’s spring and I’m getting ready for the hatching season to begin. Two of my breeding pens are doing well, productive and fertile. The other two ... well, off to a slow start because I messed up their light timer on them.. fixed now so I hope they get the message soon 😜

Breeding pens all set up, getting the incubators up and running. fertility is excellent with the silver Barnevelders so will be putting on a test hatch by mid week.

It is with much sadness, that I have decided to let go of my flock of DLB Standard Barnevelders. I am keeping my silvers, so just the DLB's are to go. I have been breeding to the SOP and showing my STANDARD Black DL Barnevelders for about 10 years now. I have a breeding flock of about 25-30 birds: 24 Hens and 6 roosters/cockerels (don't have a full count yet). I keep a closed flock and am following a spiral breeding plan, so my flock is divided into four separate breeding families. Naturally, I would prefer to have the flock go to people who are understand the Barnevelder breed, know the SOP and something about selective breeding and also someone who will show them.
