The Philosophy of Purring:
Why We're Drawn to the Sound of Serenity

There's a magic to purring that seems almost ineffable. That soft, rhythmic hum—a sound that speaks without words, embodying a universal language of comfort & peace. For cat lovers, or ailurophiles, the purr is more than just a noise; it's a balm, an elixir for the soul. But why are we so enchanted by this seemingly simple vibration? The philosophy of purring invites us to explore not only the science behind the sound but also the ancient, almost mystical allure it holds over humans.

The Mystery in the Mechanics

The science of purring is as fascinating as it is mysterious. Despite decades of study, the exact mechanics remain somewhat elusive, as if cats themselves are guarding their secret. What we do know is that the purr is produced through rapid movements of the laryngeal muscles within the voice box, which vibrate as a cat breathes in & out. It's a unique ability, one that scientists believe may have evolved for a range of reasons—healing, soothing & bonding.

Research has shown that purring can serve as a form of self-healing, with vibrations ranging from 25 to 150 hertz, frequencies associated with tissue repair, bone healing & pain relief. For cats, this may be a survival mechanism, a way to recuperate without expending too much energy. But while the purr may have evolved to soothe the cat itself, it also seems to have an uncanny ability to soothe those around it.

The Human Connection to Purring

For ailurophiles, purring is nothing short of a symphony for the soul. It's a sound that calls to our primal instincts, evoking a deep-seated sense of calm & connection. There is something profoundly therapeutic about the vibrations, a resonance that settles our minds & eases our anxieties. Studies suggest that petting a purring cat can lower blood pressure, reduce stress & even release serotonin, the brain's "happiness" chemical. In a world that moves ever faster, the purr reminds us to slow down, to savour a moment of stillness & simplicity.

This response may be rooted in our evolutionary history. As early humans formed bonds with animals, perhaps cats & their soothing purrs provided companionship & comfort, helping people relax after long days of hunting & gathering. To be drawn to the purr is, in some ways, to answer an ancient call, a whisper of a bond that stretches across millenia.

Purring as a Philosophy:
The Art of Being

Perhaps the purr resonates with us because it embodies a state of being we often strive for—a harmony of presence, contentment & serenity. Cats purr not just in joy but also in pain or discomfort, suggesting a profound acceptance of each moment. They embody resilience, finding a place of comfort even in difficult times. In that way, the purr is more than a sound; it is a philosophy, an art of living in which peace can be found no matter the circumstance.

To sit with a purring cat is to be invited into a moment of mindfulness. There is no urgency, no expectation—just the rise & fall of a creature perfectly at ease, unburdened by the weight of past or future. It's a lesson in presence, a gentle reminder that we, too, can find contentment simply by being. Cats teach us that tranquility is not something to chase but rather something we cultivate within ourselves.

Purring & the Ailurophile's Heart

For ailurophiles, the sound of a purr becomes part of life's quiet poetry, a melody that weaves through our days & reminds us of the beauty in simplicity. It is a privilege to share a space with a creature who chooses to offer us that peace, to include us in a moment of unguarded vulnerability. Purring is the cat's gift to us, a gesture of trust & connection that transcends words.

At Ailuro, we celebrate these subtle, powerful moments between humans & cats—the ones that are felt rather than spoken. In our journal, we explore these intricate bonds, offering insights that honour the philosophy of purring as more than just a sound but as an art of living. For every ailurophile who has found comfort in the soft rumble of a purr, know that you are part of a timeless tradition, one that reminds us all of the healing power of serenity.

Let the purr be your guide, an invitation to embrace a life that values presence, connection & quiet joy. After all, in a world full of noise, sometimes the softest sound carries the most profound wisdom.

Just call me the feline gadget girl! If there’s a gadget designed to enhance your feline’s natural instinct; to hunt, catch, kill {& often eat} aka. your feline’s daily playtime routine, you can bet your b***y I’ve got it, I’ve tried it or at the very least, it’s on my wish list!

I love using gadgets to establish what makes the individual feline tick. Every little lion has their unique play/prey style.

What’s your feline’s favourite toy?

More often than not, people adopt the cat with very limited understanding of what a feline is & what their requirements are.

The cat is the only domesticated species in the feline family — that is to say, the cat has been tamed to need & accept the care of humans — but they have not strayed far from their ancestors. In fact, the cat is physically & behaviourally identical.

There is no such thing as
“my cat doesn’t play”.

Your cat is a hunter.
& to play is to hunt.

Why is it so important to correct this commonly perpetuated misconception?

If you were to ask me what the top 5 frequently asked questions I receive as a feline behaviourist are, you bet your b***y “My cat keeps me up all night! How can I get more sleep?” is right up there {more like in the top 3!}

Hiring a feline behaviourist to solve a common issue, that can easily be resolved, should not have to cost you a pretty penny.

Felines are generally most active 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 at dusk & dawn, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 throughout the night.

Our little house lions are even further from being nocturnal; they build their routine around us, therefore making them diurnal {like us!}

If you have a nocturnal kitty on your hands, this is a problem. Your feline needs enrichment; dawn, morning, midday, evening & dusk.

Where you cannot provide it yourself, hire a sitter {who goes above the traditional basics of feed & scoop} or strategically place problem-solving puzzles, motion censored &/or timed gadgets your feline can interact with & release the built up energy, accumulated throughout the day, which leads them to blow off stream during the night time hours. 𝑺𝒊𝒎𝒑𝒍𝒆𝒔!

Every once in a while, I’ll turn up to an initial consultation, & their little house lion will be so excited; whizzing back & forth; putting on a show. I’ll get asked “what even are the zoomies?!”

Zoomies {Frenetic Random Activity Periods or “FRAP”} a felines healthy way of releasing stored up energy that hasn’t been used throughout the day. This happens most commonly at night, if the feline hasn’t received an adequate amount of play. If you find yourself being woken up by your little terror, be sure to set aside 15 minutes in the evenings. Not only will you relieve them by defusing their stored up energy, but you should have them adjusted to your sleeping schedule too.

Whilst the question as to whether or not felines experience SAD currently remains unconfirmed, given what we know {previous post; Autumn Equinox & How It Affects} The answer to this question should be a no-brainer;

Felines are at risk of SAD. After all, what defines SAD?

Seasonal Affective Disorder {SAD} is a type of depression or depressive-like state that occurs seasonally — typically beginning around fall & winter, & lasting into spring.

Symptoms commonly consist of;
✫ Low energy &/or lack of motivation
✫ Reduced social interactions
✫ Change in appetite &/or weight
✫ Increased restlessness, anxiety
&/or aggression.

Helping your feline overcome seasonal depression is very similar to how we would treat the disorder in ourselves; light therapy, physical activity & a solid routine!

Oh! Side note! I know I received a few DMs’ curious & asking if I plan to bring tarot to IG {given that I’ve made the one or two posts in the past} I very much doubt it, as I’d like to keep the 𝐓𝐖𝐁 feed as feline-focused as possible …I’d be more than happy to share through my stories from time to time though?!

01/10/2021

The spring & fall equinox, winter & summer solstice & the forming & melting of snow - these are the significant events that impact all life that surrounds us.

It is these continual changes, occurring slowly over time, which control our circadian rhythms. This rhythm typically occurs over a 24 hour period & ensures that our bodies take the time to complete various physiological & behavioural processes. All of these processes are completed in an effort to promote personal health & wellbeing. Once we start looking beyond our daily circadian rhythm the human internal calendar begins to fall apart. We must then rely on various other natural indicators to determine date & time accurately.

Amazingly though, in the natural world, it is these subtle changes that living things rely on as their internal clock. Changes in star location, & day & night length, all combine to provide living things with the cues they need to signal the appropriate time to change various physiological or behavioural processes. If these cues were not cyclic & relatively constant, living things would not be able to determine the appropriate time to start hibernating, migrating, caching food, changing colours, losing leaves, or reproducing; making survival that much harder.

I’ll be going into more depth as to how this affects our domestic little lions, because believe it or not, regardless of indoor/outdoor access, seasonal changes can play a significant role in their mental & physical health!
