moulting season seems to be almost constant. it’s important to check your bunnies’ eating. spotting them slowing down and sitting hunched is a time to act.

Stasis is unfortunately something that most rabbit guardians will have to deal with. Not all rabbits will experience it in their lifetime but it's certainly not uncommon.

The main sign of stasis is inappetence. If a rabbit is not interested in food then this means they are in stasis. Try to keep them warm and encourage them to move for an hour, offering all their favourite foods. If there is no improvement or they are clearly in a lot of pain, head straight to a rabbit savvy exotic vet.

It is so important that no treatment is given before a blockage is ruled out with a glucose reading. If a vet, nurse or receptionist tells you to treat stasis without ruling out a blockage, ask for another opinion or go immediately to a different vet. Syringe feeding, giving gut stimulants and massaging a rabbit with a blockage can be fatal.

Remember that stasis is always a symptom and never an illness in itself and investigations should always be taken seriously

If you’re considering adding pet rabbits to your home then please .

The UK is experiencing the worst rabbit rescue crisis ever & rescue centres are overwhelmed, you can help by adopting buns that are currently at these centres looking for new homes 🐰🐰

How rabbit adoption works.

- Most rescue centres will want to visit your home to see where the rabbits will live before letting you adopt.

- They will also ask you questions to make sure you fully understand what a commitment it is and what level of welfare is needed.

To educate yourself further & understand the level of commitment buns need, download your free copy of On The Hop here: https://rabbitwelfare.co.uk/rabbit-care-booklet/

Rabbits have the misfortune of being found in various locations, such as farm parks, mobile petting zoos, and animal encounters. These places should all be licenced and inspected, so they should have good welfare standards, but the truth is that we have yet to see one that we think meets the Animal....

i know this is in the States but it’s a small world and they are experiencing the same as pretty much all bunny rescues over here. so many in the uk are having to turn bunnies down every day or even close doors temporarily until they can sort their finances out somewhat. and i know it’s not just bunnies. so very sad.

We hate having to do this, but we have no other choice right now. Until we pull ourselves out of debt and have enough funds to take care of the rabbits already in our care, we cannot responsibly intake any more rabbits.

We owe at minimum $8000 right now between our outstanding vet bills and our credit card. A few of our rabbits have had very expensive medical issues lately that have cost us thousands. We can’t get ahead. We’re spending more than what we’re getting back in donations and we hate having to beg people for money when we know how high the cost of living is and how much others are struggling too.

We’re still getting owner surrender requests every day that we have to turn away. We’ve had to say no to a rabbit with a broken leg who wasn’t receiving medical care, rabbits who were losing their home due to their owner leaving the country, orphaned rabbits, rabbits with euthanasia dates at the shelters they’re at… Every day we have to say no to these animals, knowing there’s no solution we can offer to the people trying to find placement for them, and knowing some of them will likely end up not getting the second chance they deserve.

We want to be able to help more rabbits but we need to do right by the ones already in our care. Harvey, Eloise, Chewie, Berry, all of our dental buns, all the buns who still need to be spayed and neutered…

The reality right now is that many rescues are struggling in one way or another. Some rescues have funds but no fosters, others have fosters but no funds, others have neither, it’s just not a good situation right now for anyone.

I hope that we won’t have to remain closed for long, but it just depends on how quickly we can pay off our debt.

We hate having to ask, but please if you can spare anything to help us out, we would be extremely grateful. 100% of donations go directly towards our vet bills and donations over $20 are tax deductible.

Donations can be made via PayPal or etransfer to [email protected], or through our website at https://www.pumpkinsacres.ca/donate . No amount is too small - everything helps.

Thank you for understanding. 😞

Rabbits are healthier and happier in pairs 🐇🐇

If you're housing pet rabbits of the opposite s*x together, it's important to make sure they're neutered to prevent any unwanted litters.

To find out more information about neutering, contact your local vets for advice and guidance.

It goes without saying that reputable rescues are going to be anti breeding of all species. It blows my mind that despite having a wealth of information at our fingertips, still people choose breeders over rescue. And whilst we continue to line breeders pockets, we are encouraging them to carry on. If you believe that by going to a breeder you’ll get a healthier, friendlier rabbit, let me tell you that it couldn’t be further from the truth.

Ronnie is originally from a show breeder. He looks as far from a rabbit should do as he possibly could. His flat face and squashed up body, all in the name of looking cute, causes him no end of health issues. Is it his breeder forking out the thousands for faecal samples, xrays, blood tests, meds and the almost inevitable ct scan? No, of course not.

Another rabbit in our care came from a supposedly ‘ethical breeder’ (there is no such thing, in our opinion). Their reviews read that they are ‘highly recommended’, and that their rabbits are clearly well loved.

However…Did said breeder meet his welfare needs, in terms of space, diet and companionship?

No, they didn’t.

Did they address his arthritic joints and attempt to alleviate his pain?

No, they didn’t.

Did the breeder vaccinate him against deadly diseases? Or treat his severe mite infestation? Or his dental disease?

Well, I think you know the answer…no, they didn’t.

Did the breeder continue to use him; a chronically unwell, chronically poor example of a healthy rabbit to create more rabbits? Indeed they did.

Is it the breeder about to be broken hearted as he dies, having never known a happy loving home? No…it isn’t.

Please, please support reputable, ethical rescues instead of lining the pockets of breeders who have absolutely no care for the animals they are exploiting. If you don’t, who will pick up the pieces time and time again when we are no longer here? 💔

At 4:17am, Tom called and informed us that Jeff had suffered a fatal cardiac arrest. We cannot describe how heartbroken we are 😞 his blood pressure dropped dramatically and nothing could have been done any further.

Jeff was rescued from a reptile shop last year, from a fate far worse than how it’s ended with us. He was just a young chap, around the age of 2 with a big personality and much fluff. Everyone adored Jeff for the little character he was. Many people met him who’d been to visit the rescue over the past few months. He was truly adored.

We give every rabbit the best chance we possibly can, always where we feel it’s ethical to do so. I hope our commitment and devotion is seen by our wonderful supporters, we truly do our very, very best for all of them.

We haven’t received jeffs bill yet but the lower estimate was £1,000 so we expect to pay this for his care and treatment at great western exotics. Prior to this bill, his day admit for yesterday was £170.

We unfortunately and regrettably have no choice but to close our doors for the foreseeable, we need to get back on our feet.
We cannot viably and responsibly continue to work at such a dramatic loss. Our finances have taken blow after blow since November and we’re now at the point that we cannot continue to responsibly operate and take in more rabbits in need. It’s so painful to have to make this decision but ultimately, money isn’t a bottomless pit and we have to be sensible and ensure we can afford all of the rabbits currently in our care.
We are sorry, but we can no longer help them because we simply don’t have the funds.
We do not get funding from anywhere else, all we have is what we are personally able to put in and what you donate to us. There are no grants or government support, what we get is what we beg you all for. It’s simply how it works.

Next Friday is going to be incredibly expensive with 3 of our most complex sanctuary rabbits booked in at Rutland. Of course our page will still remain active and adoptions and care of the rabbits we have will still continue, we have a couple of rabbits to introduce to you still that have come to us over the last few weeks 🙂

We hope to be in a position soon to reopen to new intakes, we will continue to fundraise In order to get ourselves back on top again and to continue operating as we have until now.

Your support means the world to us and is literally the reason why we are able to exist in the first place. We cannot thank you all enough for your generosity. Please do continue to support us where you can, please do share our posts and please do invite your friends list to like/follow our page. The more supporters we have here, the more income we’re able to generate and the quicker we can get back to doing what we do best - helping Britain’s most neglected pets.

Thank you all for understanding ❤️

it’s been a dreadful end to the year for these wonderful people. it focuses the whole world of bunny (and other animal) rescues and what they deal with day in day out as a result of the way humans treat animals all too often- sometimes through lack of understanding, sometimes sadly not. please help if you can.

Decembers spend so far 😰😰😰 wow.

Jason is booked in for Thursday providing we can get transport for him 🙏 (I cannot have time off work 😞) we’re really hoping to be able to raise a decent chunk towards Jason’s costs but he’s probably the least favoured of our sanctuary rabbits, the least known. Jason is an aloof character, he doesn’t like people all too much, he doesn’t really ‘show’ himself for pictures around the rescue but he IS a wonderful and funny chap and he DOES deserve our help - just like we all rallied for penelope, for Peggy, for Iris, for honey, for Darby. Jason deserves this.

We’ll raid every piggy bank, pool every bit of spare change we have and any Christmas money we get will go towards Jason. We know many people aren’t in the position to donate right now, but you can still help. You can still share this post and spread the message far and wide 🛷

Hibernation questions answers and myths dispelled…

💤 I don’t hibernate for months on end and will wake to change nest and maybe forage.

⚖️ Weight is just a number… it won’t tell you about my health, hydration or condition so if I am out at night in Cornwall please DON’T weigh me as it will just cause stress!

🌙 I don’t have to hibernate and will be active during mild spells, please don’t panic or disturb me if I’m out at night and active in winter.

🏡 I will only hibernate within a nest, if I am out in the open I am definitely awake!

🌡 When hibernating my tempturate drops to conserve energy, it will mirror ambient down to 5 degrees or so.

🐾 It takes me up to 8 hours, if not longer, to raise my temperature to normal and be able to move around and forage.

❤️‍🩹If I am out during the daytime I am likely unwell and will need help.
