Great information from Veterinary Poisons Information Service and Animal PoisonLine about JELLYFISH if you're heading to the coast with your furbabies ❤️
We have had a number of enquires about pets being stung by jellyfish recently.
Jellyfish can still sting, even when they have been dead for weeks. In dogs, stings may occur on the nose, mouth, paws and on areas of skin with little fur to protect them. A jellyfish sting can cause vomiting or retching, swelling, distress and pain. If the jellyfish has been swallowed there may be drooling, irritation in the mouth, swelling in the throat and difficulty breathing and swallowing.
What should I do if I think my pet has been stung by a jellyfish?
Take care not to get stung.
If your dog has been stung on the skin:
• If it is safe to do so pull any remaining tentacles off the skin
with a towel or stick.
• Do not rub the tentacles off or rub the area with sand (this
may cause the stinger cells to fire).
• If possible flush the area with seawater not fresh water
(fresh water can also cause the stinger cells to fire).
If your dog has eaten a jelly fish:
• Do not attempt to make your dog vomit.
If your dog has a jelly fish in the mouth:
• Do not attempt to remove it as you may get stung. Encourage
your dog to drop the jellyfish.
Take your dog to the vet for a check-up, since there may be pain and local swelling could develop.

To be aware if you're heading to the beach....
Dogs will explore and play with material they find on beaches and this includes rubbish. There is a concern in recent years about palm oil.
Palm oil is extracted from the now widely grown African palm and related species. The oil is edible and used very extensively in food and toiletries and cosmetics.
Palm oil from ships washing out their tanks off the coast of the UK is making landfall and is found on beaches.
We have reports of Palm Oil being present along the Brighton coast today.
There is an increased likelihood of beaches being contaminated after storms.
The palm oil will have been in the sea for a considerable amount of time and is ‘denatured’ and may become rancid. The material that ends up on the beach may be a white or yellow waxy substance described as lard-like with a smell like diesel or firelighters – it is possible that the fatty material has adsorbed other material while in the sea. Lumps vary from golf-ball to boulder sized.
Most of the dogs have no or mild effects - vomiting, diarrhoea and lethargy. Vomiting after eating an oily substance carries some risk of aspiration – for this reason we would not advise making dogs sick after possible palm oil ingestion.

Hope you've managed to stay cool today ☀️
📍 Keep dogs indoors & limit their time outside to toilet trips only.
📍DO NOT walk dogs in the heat of the day. Very early morning, or very late at night tend to be cooler - but do watch the actual temperature even at these times.
📍DO NOT take your dog in the car.
📍REMEMBER: Certain breeds will suffer more in the heat: Black dogs, elderley dogs, young dogs, dogs with heart or respiratory conditions, Brachycephalic breeds (Short Snouted)
Keep cool indoors and enjoy some good canine enrichment games and feeding methods instead.
10-15 minutes of mind work is equal to a 35minute walk.

Having brought a new puppy into the family I felt I needed to brush up my own skills so I could safeguard our latest furbaby to the best of my abilities.
