Happy national dog day! How did we humans get so lucky to have these wonderful four legged creatures love us? This dog makes me laugh and feel so loved every day. Last night was extra special with so many wonderful dog smiles and snuggles. This little rescue guy stole the show (and a piece of my heart). From puppy mill to strutting his stuff around truckee in his new bandana, he is one happy, lucky dog with some very lucky people. I love them all, but rescues like this have a special place in my heart. Thank you all for an extra special final night! Your support means the world to me.

At WanderDog, we strive to make products that are beautiful and unique. With that in mind, we added a new length option to all our standard leashes and slip leads. You can now purchase these leashes in an 8ft option!
Why 8ft you may ask? The extra length gives your pup room to sniff and roam without them going too far. It is also excellent for training dogs who are shy or potentially reactive on leash because they have space to move without the leash accidentally tightening and causing them to panic. 8ft is also not so long that you have loops of rope to wrangle along with an excited dog. Give it a try and see how much more your puppy enjoys the daily wanders!
As a dog brand I am not sure if I should say Happy 4th of July! or here we go again… Sorry for the cynicism. There are many ways to celebrate this holiday that do not involve terrified dogs. Here are some tips for making this holiday as safe and relaxed as possible for you and your dog.
For those of us who live where fireworks are inevitable here are some steps I take to make this a less traumatic day.
1. Relaxation drops from and cbd treats. I have noticed these can take the edge off but may not completely calm your dog.
2. Create a safe space in the quietest part of the house. As you can see in the second photo, Kona prefers to hide in the closet under a shelf. I make sure her space is open and add a blanket curtain to make it feel extra cave like. If you have a crate your dog feels safe in, you can put it in a quiet room with a blanket draped over it. I also close the curtains to keep out any flashing lights.
3. Calming music. I play music to help drown out some of the booms and crackling. This seemed to help our dogs relax a bit and be less jumpy for every boom. There are also studies that found animals find classical music to be calming.
4. Kong or chew if your dog will eat it. Our dogs are too terrified to eat so it is not always effective for them but it can help calm your dog while creating a positive association. Loud booms=awesome special occasion tasty treat.
5. Anti anxiety medication if prescribed by your veterinarian. We have given both our dogs trazadone for super stressful situations. This is the most effective treatment I have used. If you go this route remember to give your dog the anti anxiety meds early because it takes hours for these meds to have an effect.
Other safety precautions for this day:
Keep your dog on leash at all times. You never know when someone might find it fun to set off a bottle rocket🙄. Even dogs with the most reliable recall do not listen when they go into fight or flight mode.
Make sure to keep windows and doors closed at all times. I have picked up at least one dog who bolted through an open door on the 4th and was panic sprinting through town.

Lake days are the best days😎.
The amount of joy bursting from this dog while we humans sat by the lake was hilarious to watch. Splashing, biting sticks, zooming through the woods, flopping in the dirt, then shaking mud and water all over us before zooming off to do it all again with a manic gleam in his eye. Leon’s celebration of lake days was infectious and makes me very excited for the summer of adventures ahead.

Kona may look skeptical of the spring snow, but in reality, she loves playing in it. I, on the other hand, am anxiously awaiting the day I can start playing in the garden and wear something other than flannel lined pants and multiple sweaters and jackets.

As a woman and girl from the south who never fit the mold of what women are “supposed” to act like, dress like, or enjoy doing, I love seeing how much support women get and give each other to get out there, be themselves and do every badass, powerful thing they dream up. We still have a way to go to being treated as equals in all industries but let’s keep pushing those boundaries and breaking down barriers.
