A massive thank you to everyone who attended our client evening last night at Saddlesdane Equestrian Centre. It was lovely to see you so many of you.
Well done to Matteo for two excellent talks, and thank you to Sammy and Flick for helping organise and the Saddlesdane team for making us feel so welcome.
Finally congratulations to Kate Spillet for winning the saddle pad - we look forward to seeing it in use!

What a difference a year makes!

We saw this little pony last year which had, despite recent dental care being provided, a very large overgrowth of its first upper right cheek tooth that had been left untreated.

With appropriate reduction using water cooled instruments used in stages three times over the past 12 months we have been able to get things back to normal!

Getting the basics right is so important in dentistry, it is the foundation to successful outcomes in all cases, yet sadly we see time and time again cases where overgrowths and sharp edges are ignored. This is particularly sad when it has been done in favour of more expensive treatments. Please check the credentials of your dental practitioner to ensure they are properly qualified and have had their routine dentistry independently assessed.

A day of reflection on the life of HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. A measure that he was a true horseman was the sight of his carriage, with the treat pot full of sugar lumps on the seat. It is such a small item, the importance of which will have been lost on so many watching today, but for all horse owners will have shown his horses came first.
We shall not see his like again.
RIP.

For those clients based in Kent, we are sad to share the news there has been a suspected neurological EHV case in Bredhurst. This is not believed to be linked to the recent cases in continental Europe.
As we recently shared vaccinations for EHV in the face of a potential outbreak are contraindicated.

There has been a lot of discussion regarding EHV recently in light of the cases of a neurological cases which started in Spain but have spread across continental Europe. We have been asked this week about EHV vaccinations and whether they are a good idea to protect your horse in the current circumstances.
This summary from Rainbow Equine Hospital’s medicine specialist, Matthew Robin, makes it very clear, at the current time vaccinations for EHV for most horses (pregnant mares are the exception) are not indicated, and potentially make the situation worse if your horse comes in to contact with the neurological strain.

Currently, there is a Europe-wide alert of increased risk of disease associated with Equine Herpes Virus (EHV-1), which originated in Valencia (ESP) and has already resulted in related outbreaks in at least three other countries in Europe.

Not really dentistry related, but such an important safety matter for our patients! This new video, part of the BHS “Dead? Or Dead Slow” campaign, really gets the message across.

Here’s something a bit different for you! I knew next to nothing about horses before filming this video and I learnt a lot, so I hope you do too. In 2020, t...

This week we managed to follow up on a case we have been treating for the past 18mths. When we first saw this 2.5yo Arab Gelding he was quidding and had bilateral jaw swellings caused by deep periodontal disease. There was concern that the periodontal disease if left untreated might affect the developing adult teeth. Now 18mths later following treatment to prevent the food packing, the deciduous (baby) teeth have been lost and the healthy permanent dentition have erupted in to position.
Managing periodontal disease can be really challenging and require considerable experience in treatment selection to acheive the best outcomes. We are delighted with the result in this case 😊

Overgrowths as large as this one we saw in a child’s pony last summer fortunately are rare - in this case arising due to a missing lower tooth.
Fortunately with a couple of treatments over 6months we are getting close to a normal occlusal level. By watching the colour change in the secondary dentine during each treatment we can recognise where to stop and prevent pulp exposure whilst still being effective in our treatment.
We cannot stress enough how important it is for your horses that dentistry is carried out by appropriately trained and qualified individuals who will understand how to undertake these effectively and safely. Sadly this case had received a “dental” only a few weeks before our first visit 😞

A couple of similar cases from the past two weeks. Traumatic fractures to the teeth don’t necessarily mean an extraction. In these cases after debriding the damaged pulp it was possible place a pulp cap (effectively a dressing) to give the tooth the best chance of survival. Thank you to Walls Equine Dental Services,
Sussex Equine Hospital and Riverside Vets for referring these cases.

Just got back from the British Veterinary Dental Association Annual Scientific Meeting. These meetings allow us to gain perspective from the comparative aspect of veterinary dentistry in other species which is always useful when considering advanced dentistry procedures such as endodontics and restorative dentistry in horses.

We are off to Utrecht this weekend to teach practical aspects of equine cheek tooth extraction to vets from across Europe. This is part of our ethos of ensuring we share our experience in equine dentistry with others to help advance equine dentistry. It also enables us to meet other veterinary surgeons specialising in this field, exchange ideas to ensure we remain at the forefront of equine dentistry in the UK and Europe.
