How do we reduce the environmental footprint of our favourite Wampum Conditioning Shampoo?
The best way to calculate the environmental footprint of a shampoo is done with a method called life cycle analysis. This means we take into account (1) the raw materials, how they are made, are they sustainable or fossil fuel based, (2) how the product is transported to the user and how it is used, and finally, (3) how does it affect the water supply when it is discharged.
At Wampum we therefore have a multi-dimensional approach and we have done this for much longer than everyone else (since 2005).
REDUCED PLASTIC & REDUCED TRANSPORT
Wampum shampoos are all concentrates thus (1) reducing the plastic bottles needed to pack it in and (2) reducing transport costs to the user.
NATURAL SUSTAINABLE INGREDIENTS
Wampum Conditioning Shampoo is made from 100% coconut oil, with no use of fossil fuel derived ingredients.
NO ADDED PRESERVATIVES
Wampum Conditioning Shampoo also has no added preservatives because we don’t add water containing microbes.
BIODEGRADABLE
Lastly, Wampum Conditioning Shampoo is 100% biodegradable and has no added fragrance. In any case animals hate fragrance as it masks their primary smell organ and can make them nervous.
PERFORMANCE
But, we do not compromise on performance!!! The shampoo is mild and hypoallergenic, cleans well, leaves the hair soft and conditioned, has the correct pH of 7.5 for most animal skin, contains a powerful skin refatting agent (coconut oil) and works out very affordable because you dilute it at the point of use (500ml makes 2.5 litres of still very concentrated shampoo and you can dilute even more if you want).

Dental Care – an alternative approach

It’s winter; our pets are cuddling up really close, and healthy teeth and gums have never been more important! Here is an alternative to costly dentals, involving anesthetic.

The Kit
- A toothbrush
- Table salt or dog toothpaste
- Wampum Anti-Bacterial Mouth Spray R123.00
- Wampum Fragaria Vesca 30x (Wild Strawberry) R232.00

The Routine

Morning
- Brush teeth with salt water or toothpaste (1/2 teaspoon salt in a glass of water)
- Spray the gums with the Mouth Spray by lifting the lips on either side

Afternoon
- Give your dog or cat 20 granules of Fragaria Vesca 30x by placing it on the tongue. Do not touch the homeopathic granules with your fingers; pour the granules into the lid and drop them into the mouth

The Fragaria will soften the existing tartar, making it easier to remove with brushing and the Mouth Spray will kill the bacteria that cause tartar and bad breath, also healing the gums of gingivitis.

Over a period of 4 to 6 weeks, the teeth will become progressively cleaner, until all the tartar is eventually removed.

Wampum Products has been granted permission by the CIPC to operate with regards to all our health, hygiene and animal care products. Our factory is in an isolated farming area in the East of Pretoria (our staff all live in the same agricultural estate) and we take the utmost care in how we handle the goods we manufacture and ship. The Courier Guy (our courier service) is also operational and Postnet will open on 1 May. 🙂

pH is a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of water or of an aqueous environment. Pure water is pH neutral. 1-6 (acidic), 7 (neutral), 8-14 (basic)

Humans have “acidic” hair, pets have “alkaline” hair. The actual pH of your dog’s and cat’s skin and hair will be between 7.2 and 7.8. Human skin pH is 4.9. People have one hair per follicle, dogs and cats have between 7 and 15.

Wampum Conditioning Shampoo when diluted in the bath water has a pH of ~7.5, depending on the pH of the tap water. It restores the correct pH and refats the skin. That is why it works so well!! Not just to clean, but to treat allergies and sensitive skins and prevent flaking and irritation.

The importance of proper conditioning

All hair is made up of a medulla, the cortex (the inside) and a surface layer of cuticles. All hair is dead. Stress of heat, repeated brushing, stripping shampoos, chemical treatments, and the sun and environment are all able to damage the hair, leach protein and strip the lipids from the surface. A proper conditioner can replace protein, repair bonds and replace the surface lipids.
Cheap conditioners are purely anti-statics and do not repair the hair shaft. They merely counteract the effect of anionic shampoos.
Common conditioners contain cationic compounds that bond to the hair surface and make brushing easier. They also do not repair the hair shaft.
The best conditioners contain protein to replace the leached proteins and lipids (structured oils) to replace and repair the lipids on the hair surface that have been damaged. Good conditioners also contain molecules like Panthenol that can pe*****te the shaft, repair bonds and elasticize the embrittled hair again.
Wampum Conditioning Rinse (our light conditioner) and Wampum Limited Edition Conditioner (our strong conditioner) both contain cationic compounds to condition, protein to repair, oil to relipidise the surface and Panthenol to re-elasticise the hair. Wampum Magic Rinse also contains a silicone wax to give additional surface slip for very fine and dull hair. In addition, all the Wampum conditioners contain humectants to stop the hair from drying out between baths and being damaged by the sun.

Let us help dogs that itch and scratch now and forever!!
Did you know that more than 50% of all visits to a veterinary surgeon is for skin irritations, scratching, itching and related allergies? The usual prescription is cortisone (and antibiotics if there is an associated infection). Anyone who has experienced a dog scratching continuously, will know the skin just feels better while on cortisone and soon after the cortisone is finished, the scratching just starts again. Poor babies 
Wampum Soothing Skin Spray can completely solve 85% of all skin itching cases and alleviate the balance to a very large extent. The spray contains 4 skin actives, 2 natural ones and two conventional medicinal ones: comfrey extract, witch hazel extract, salicylic acid and allantoin. It can be used safely with any other medication. It is water-based so there is no residual cream base for the dog to keep licking at.
Spray the skin by parting the coat and leave to dry. Apply as often as necessary but in the beginning when the skin is red, at least three times a day.
For best results, bath the affected dogs with Wampum Conditioning Shampoo Concentrate, leave on for 3 minutes in the bath to re-fat the skin, rinse very well, spray Wampum Soothing Skin Spray on the skin and dry or let dry. Then re-apply Wampum Soothing Skin Spray once, twice or three times a day until the next bath.

Wampum Conditioning Shampoo Concentrate is made from 100% coconut oil and has no added preservatives, no added fragrance or added pigments and dyes. It is 100% biodegradable. On top of this, coconut oil in known to be one of the best oils for hair and skin. The pH of the shampoo is just over 7 which is exactly the pH of dog, cat and horse skin (human skin pH=5.5).

And last but not least, the shampoo is a concentrate that dilutes 1:4 to 1:8 with water meaning you use between 4 and 8 times less plastic when you buy and use our shampoo. In addition, the bottle, label and top are all made of polyolefins (polyethylene and polypropylene) and can be recycled directly into the recycled polyolefin stream.
