Wildlife season is upon us and the babies in need of help have started to arrive 🦉
This Tawney owlet came to us after being found on a road with no nest nearby 😞
It was a little weak and cold but after some TLC by our fabulous MiNight Vet North Devon team, it started to feed really well 🤩
Here it is enjoying some nice grub! 😋
The clicking sound that you hear means that it’s a little unsure about the person feeding it but nonetheless, food is way more important 🤤

Antibiotic Amnesty Video
Working together on the safe disposal of your pets’ unused antibiotics
Did you know that antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a world-wide health threat, as bacteria are becoming resistant to many antibiotics that we use in human and veterinary medicine?

🚨Unusual patient of the day 😍🦇
This juvenile common pipistrelle a.k.a Edward Cullen 🙊 was handed to our Roundswell branch after being found grounded.
We provided a small amount of oral rehydration and is now in the care of North Devon Bat Care. Here, he will continue his treatment for an injured wing and hopefully subsequent rehabilitation and release.
How cute is he! 🥰
Don't throw sticks for your dogs!
***Watch this video to see why throwing sticks for your dog is just not worth it! PLEASE share to spread the word 😳***
Apologies for the gruesome content but if this video saves just one life or a severe injury then it's most definitely worth it.
You may have got away with it hundreds of times before but it's dangerous. If the stick lands awkwardly or dogs carry it end on and the free end catches the ground or a tree, that stick can get rammed to the back of the throat. If this happens, the sticks typically cut open the soft tissues near the base of the tongue and then it's just luck as to whether the stick severs a major artery or vein. With enough force the stick can enter the chest cavity. This stick was millimeters from the carotid artery and close to entering the thorax. He was a very lucky dog and we anticipate a full recovery.
Bertie and her puppies
Bertie the French Bulldog and her beautiful new puppies, whelped at Mullacott Veterinary Hospital in the early hours of Saturday morning
Thank you!
We have the loveliest clients! A massive thank you to Mrs Gale (and her dog Sassy) for delivering a wonderful cake made especially for the team at Charter vets, to say a big thank you to us all, and the caring service we give.
It's delicious and we really appreciate it 😍
Brachycephalic airway surgery in dogs
This summer has been a hot one and whilst this has been fantastic for most of us, many of our brachycephalic (short faced) dogs have been struggling. Their short noses and compressed facial features can result in breathing difficulties that are more pronounced in warm weather. Luckily, at Charter Vets, we're able to offer the life altering 'brachycephalic airway surgery' that can make all the difference. Tom Williams tells the story of Hank, a young English Bulldog who was having a particularly tough life
More information about the story, including a write-up from Hank's owners, can be found here : http://www.chartervets.com/portfolio-items/boas-case-study/

Chenson the Staffie
As it's #VeterinaryNurseAwarenessMonth, we thought we'd take a look at one of the many and varied roles undertaken by our talented team - running the hydrotherapy unit at Charter Veterinary Hospital Roundswell.
Hydrotherapy is used as an alternative to, or to compliment weight bearing exercise. It has many uses such as to speed up recovery after operations, to relieve degenerative conditions such as osteoarthritis and is also used as a tool in overweight dogs to build fitness and aid weight loss.
The buoyancy of the water allows dogs to move more freely than they might otherwise do on land. It also builds up muscle mass, improves fitness and aids joint mobility. In the first instance, dogs are examined by a vet to check their suitability for hydrotherapy. Our team of qualified veterinary nurses then carry out the sessions and continuously assess the needs and ability of the individual patient to develop a programme that will be most beneficial.
Our RVN Angela gives us an insight into one of the tasks she finds most rewarding: "I really enjoy doing hydrotherapy. I get to see the dog for several weeks through the course of their therapy, and see it go from only being able to walk for 3-4 minutes at a time, to striding out and walking confidently for 20 minutes or more through the water."
This week, has Angela worked with Chenson the three-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier below. He has had an operation to repair a cruciate ligament in his knee in January and has been coming to weekly sessions to aid his recovery. Chenson is reaping huge benefit from the therapy and seems to be enjoying himself too!
For more information about our hydrotherapy service, call our Roundswell hospital on 01271 371115 or pop in and ask a member of our veterinary team.
Snoopy
Snoopy - This brave rescue dog has made a great start on his recovery.
Here she is with a few stories to tell !!!
A video of Rob Hawkins tortoises which he has agree to let us share.
We hope you enjoy, it certainly made us laugh.
This little man is Trix who had tremors and neurological signs after raiding the green bin at home.
Mouldy food contains mycotoxins which cause tremors, high heart rate and even seizures in some extreme cases. Signs develop within 30 minutes of ingestion.
Trix made a full recovery after staying overnight on fluids and muscle relaxants.
His owners have kindly agreed to let us share this video to highlight the danger of mouldy food to dogs.
With the large number of green bins about in Devon keep yours well out of the way of your dog.
If you suspect your dog may have consumed mouldy food give us a ring immediately.
Freddie came to see vet Alison earlier this week. He brought along his Teddy for company.
We though my Freddie was so sweet we just had to share a video!
