Over the past few weeks it’s been a very time for us. We had lamb marking, shearing our ewes, two new mobs of sheep being add to the mix as well as preg testing out heifer and not to mention all the fun family activities we jam in there as well.

Being very time poor you take every opportunity you can get to get a little bit training done to keep the dogs thinking and in there toes.

Mixed In all that I looked after my mates dog and put some train into him while he was away mustering for a couple weeks.

So to say the least it’s been busy. But with things staring to level off I should be able to really put some time into refining the edges and starting to make some steps forward.

Trex feeling pretty happy with him self after “helping” load a drenching race.

Peppa taking a break in an old water trough on a hot day

After a few really good days with peppa on the training mob we had a bit of set in the yards yesterday when I had our mob of ewes come through getting a check over for fly blow and a general look at health.

We had a few issues In the yard with go over the mob and going in the right direction.

Looking back and reflecting on the day I can honestly say that the issue was a number different factors, none of which were on Peppa.
I was frustrated because of the heat and a long week at work, which put me in a bit of mood in turn made me not work in calm manner and was getting irritated.
Animals are very good at picking up on body language and how we are feeling.
I had to remind myself through out the afternoon that 1 Peppa is still learning, 2 it’s hot and I’m tied so my dog must be tied and needs a break also, 3 my dog doesn’t understand what’s going wrong so there is no need to take it out on my dog she is doing her best.

In situations like this, and it’s easier said then done somedays, is to take a step back and re assess the approach your taking and readjust where needed. Even walk away and have breather.

At the end of the day I ended up having the dogs( all three of them, I’m looking after a mates dog for a week or two) tied in the corner and working my mob without the dogs for the last part of the day.

Once I had finished my work I made sure to do something positive with the dogs to end our day on a good note, so a simple run along side the bike as we put the sheep away was ample for them to be happy at the end of the day.

Bit these ”bad” days highlight areas to work on in the future. Weather it be with the dog or with myself there is always something to take out of bad days. ( that’s can even go for life in general really).

A failure is only that if you don’t learn anything from it.

This was Trex, I think third time looking at sheep, but first time with out the other puppies from the litter in the yard.
I used Peppa to just move the mob around so he had to do a little “work”
now Trex is only 8 weeks old in this video. No training, this is all natural ability he is showing.
What I liked most was how calm he was, how he didn’t sit there barking at them, he’s just slumped down and held them. Moved to block when needed and brought back when he noticed one had not come over.

Since this video I have done more with Peppa to stop her nipping so much and start using her pressure instead nipping as much.
When dealing with certain lines of lambs and ewes nipping is a big no no so we do use muzzles in the yards when this is a problem.

This was Peppa first run with me off lead with the sheep, I had only had her less then a week at this point, the purpose of doing this was to see what kind of natural ability she had and what I need to work on. It looks messy and unorganised but it showed me a lot and gave me confidence in her ability.
She is only around 8 months old in this video, so still young, I had to be careful not to over work and stress her out.
From this I went back home and started researching what I needed to learn to help train Peppa in the areas I needed.
I started with the basic, Sit, stay/stop and recall.

Having a good stop on your dog is, in my opinion, one of the most important things to have taught them, with a good stop if something goes wrong you can stop them and restart.

This is me( thank my wife for the photo, and Hide & Horn Australia, for the clothes and hat) I’m a father and husband working as farm hand on property in lower lakes region of South Australia. I started working stock full time about 18months ago. I’ve learnt a lot thanks to my wife who is very passionate about animal health and agricultural industry, and my boss for taking the time to teach me how to work stock and run a farm.
After a failed attempt at taking on a dog I decided to take a step back and learn more about the concepts of training dogs for stock work and working stock in general.
I’m still learning to this day how to train and how to work stock and am still making mistakes as I progress, but have learnt a lot on short amount of time and feel like I have matured a lot as stockman and dog trainer, still far from perfect but have come along way.
I have always enjoyed watching dogs work stock and seeing the bond between the dog and their handler.
When I first started looking into training dogs I found alot of course you watch online, and a schools to attend, but nothing really to show to “bad” days of training, nothing to help prepare you for the difficult days were the dog won’t listen or does the wrong thing, and how to over come these issues.
So I thought I would attempt to do a bit of diary to document my journey and in turn hope to help those in similar situations to me.

This is Trex, He was born In June this year(2023).
After working with Peppa and watching a few yard dog trails I decided I wanted a second dog to help Peppa out and also compete in once he is ready. Trex was one of 8 in his litter and from his first look at the sheep at 6 weeks old caught my eye with how he was calm but keen to hold the stock and track there movement.
Trex will be my first attempt at starting a puppy to work let alone compete in a competition, so I am excepting to make a few mistakes along the way but also learn from them and hopefully better my approach In the future.
Trex has had a few looks now at sheep along side Peppa and also a fe other trained stock dogs as guidance and has showed good instincts so far.
The plan is to get trexs basics down pat, recall, sit/stop and stay. And then work on his balance and then get him to back the sheep. And from there get him working the yards to complete a course similar to what would be in competition.

This Peppa, i got Peppa back in February this year (2023) at around the age of 8months old. She came to me lightly started with good instinct and eager to work.
from day one I knew I had to bond with her as much as possible given I didn’t get her till later on so I missed out on the chance to bond with her as a puppy. But this just gave me all the more motivation to get her straight into training, starting with basics, like recall, sit and stay.
From the first week she showed a lot of promise and eagerness to work and learn with me.
Peppa has good strength as a paddock dog and runs alot on instinct out in the paddock pushing the mob towards myself standing at the gateways or in the direction I need the mob to go.
Yard work was not her strong suit but I gave me something to work on and with time and consist training she has proven she can be a good all round work dog for me.
