A winter storm is on the way, and we need to be sure our feline friends who live outdoors are protected. Our co-founder Ray and other CRU volunteers have built cat shelters for colonies of local feral kitties. These shelters are inexpensive and easy for you to make at home. Here’s what you need:

😺 A plastic bin. We buy ours at Ollie’s Bargain Outlet, but you can also find them at Lowe’s, Home Depot, and Target
😺 Straw: SAY NAY TO HAY! Hay absorbs moisture, while straw does not.
😺 Reflectix insulation: You can find this at Lowe’s.
😺 Plywood to place the shelter on
😺 Bricks or stones on top of the shelter so the lid doesn’t blow off.

When constructing the shelter, use a marker or pen to draw the lines for the entrance, keeping in mind that the bottom should be a couple of inches above the ground. Pro tip: Use a blow dryer to heat the lines you have drawn — this makes it easier to use a knife to cut out the entrance.

Let’s take good care of our outdoor kitties this season. Please SHARE and SAVE this post!

Hi everyone! I wanted to let you all know I am improving quite a bit and am so grateful to everyone who has helped me! I still have a few more weeks of antibiotics to get through, but am optimistic that I am on the mend! Love, Buddy the Elf 🧝😻

You have just a few more weeks to donate through the federal government’s Combined Federal Campaign!

Wondering how we use the funds we get through the CFC? Buddy the Elf is an example. He’s lived as part of an outdoor cat colony for more than 7 years, and his feeder reached out to CRU for help when it became apparent he was dehydrated and sick. He’s doing better, but has a long road ahead of him. We’re so grateful for all who have been so generous with donations!

The deadline to donate is January 15. Use the CFC code 23545. Please share with any federal workers you know!

Happy New Year! As we close out 2024, we wanted to thank you for all of your generous donations this year!

Thanks to you, we repaired the roof on the feral sanctuary shed at our Arnold shelter, ensuring its residents stay warm and dry. We’re also preparing for essential repairs at our two Eastern Shore locations to enhance these facilities to provide safer, more comfortable environments for our long- term resident community cats.

As of the end of November, we have spent $32,952 on medical services for the 50+ cats in our care and TNvR-M. As you are no doubt aware, the cost of veterinary services has skyrocketed! $19,000 of this total helped 11 cats with severe medical conditions, such as extensive dental work, a leg amputation and other dire health complications stemming from extended living outdoors. Thanks to your generosity, these cats now have a chance at a better, healthier life.

Our volunteers facilitated the spay and neuter of 30 community cats, preventing overpopulation and improving the quality of life for countless felines.

Thank you again for all you have done for CRU in 2024. We wish you all the best in 2025!

Hi! I’m Buddy the Elf 💚😻 and I need your help.

For seven years, I have been part of a feral colony cared for by a dedicated feeder. Just over a week ago, my feeder noticed I wasn’t myself. My eye looked funny and I was struggling to walk and falling over.

The kind people at CRU took me to the vet, where I was diagnosed with toxoplasmosis. I also tested positive for FIV.

To keep me safe during my recovery, I have been given a spacious new dog crate with plenty of room to rest. Due to my neurological symptoms, I am temporarily unable to climb, but I am making strides every day. My dizziness is improving, my appetite is strong, and my severe constipation is now under control with medication.

Despite all of this, I’m an affectionate kitty and I love people! I don’t always love other cats, but I would be a perfect companion for anyone looking for a loyal and loving friend. Once I am feeling better, I will be ready to find my forever home with my forever family!

All of this medical care has gotten expensive, with the bill reaching nearly $3,000. If you’d like to be my holiday hero, I would so appreciate a donation: https://catsrusrescue.org/support-us/donate/

And I’d love for you to consider adopting me when I am healthy.

I promise to deliver you holiday cheer all year round!

Three of our shelter kitties got exactly what they wanted for Christmas! 🎄

Fergie — now called Daisy — and Peaches (who had been at our shelter for nearly a year!) went to the same home and will continue to live as siblings! Boots also went to his fur-ever home! We couldn’t be happier for these kitties and their new families!

My name is Fergie, and please don’t let my age fool you! I’m 15, but have the energy and catitude of a cat half my age. Someone dumped me on the streets in Baltimore a few months ago and I am really hoping to find my family in the new year so I can spend my golden years in a comfortable home where I can be spoiled like the queen I am.

CRU success story: Bumpy!

Bumpy was in CRU care for 16 months, but didn’t fare well in a shelter environment. So she went home with a foster who with patience and care helped her blossom into a more confident cat!

A loving family adopted her and re-named her Lilly.

Her story is a good reminder that every cat deserves the chance to find a loving home, no matter how long it takes!
