If you follow us on social media, you may have seen members our feathered flock make an appearance or two. But, did you know that Collars by Kylie works closely with Parrot Education, Adoption, & Rehoming League (PEARL)? When we first opened Collars by Kylie our goal was to partner with local dog shelters, but our feathered friends guided us in a different direction. While we still work with and support several local dog and cat rescues, a main facet of our organization has been to help spread awareness and raise funds for the third most popular pet, the parrot.
Collars by Kylie is about creating more than just an accessory for your pet. We believe dogs are more than pets and that their collars should be a representation of everything that they are. In providing you and your beloved dog with fashionable collars and accessories, we aim for you to be ecstatic with the quality products we hand craft. Our collars and accessories are of the highest quality - by using 100% cotton fabrics, nickel plated metal hardware, high quality thread and sewn on an industrial strength sewing machine. What sets us apart from other dog collar creators is the material we use. We sew our stylish cotton fabrics over a strong polypropylene webbing, which is how we produce stylish products without sacrificing strength and durability. Thought and excitement goes into every detail from planning our collections, carefully sewing each collar, coming up with new products to offer, and shipping our collars out to their new owners. PEARL is a 501(c) nonprofit organization. They are a parrot rescue and education organization and the only rescue dedicated to parrots in Western Pennsylvania. They rescue and rehome parrots from all over and adopt them to qualified, loving homes. All adopters are required to attend educational programs to ensure they are set up for success when brining a parrot into their home. Parrots are the third most popular pet in the United States, and unfortunately approximately 85% of birds purchased are rehomed or abandoned within the first year. PEARL takes in these birds, rehabilitate them, and find them stable, prepared homes. Because of this statistic a central tenet of their mission is education. They want to make sure that everyone who is interested in bringing a companion parrot into their lives is prepared and aware of the challenges associated with having a bird in the home. Like dogs and cats there is a parrot overpopulation problem. Unlike dogs and cats there are not many places for birds to go once they are no longer wanted. PEARL is the inspiration behind all of the art featured in this shop. Each painting is done on the feathers from the birds in PEARL’s program. These feathers are from various species of parrots and are all naturally molted. Partial proceeds from each painting sold goes directly to PEARL Parrot Rescue. In addition to the feathers paintings, Collars by Kylie and PEARL often team up at events, with the goal of attracting as many people possible to the mission of the rescue.
