Rabies roundup for June 2023. There have been fourteen new confirmed cases of rabies in KZN this month. These include a cat from eThekwini metro, and a pig from King Cetshwayo district. Another case was a stray dog from eThekwini metro that was giving birth to a litter of pups…a reality check that even tiny puppies (and kittens) can contract, transmit and die of rabies. Vaccination history of puppies, as well as a thorough background check including vaccination status of their mother, is very important when deciding on a new family pet.

Puppies can also get rabies. A recent rabies vaccine does not mean that an animal cannot already be incubating the virus and develop rabies. Do your homework before adopting a pet into your household. Background of the puppy and vaccination status of the mother dog are key factors. Don't put your pets and your family at unnecessary risk.
Regular, timeous vaccinations before exposure to the virus are what prevent disease. Make sure your pets' vaccines are up to date and please spread the word.
