Hello humans, it’s giveaway time! As some of you already know I recently consulted with Gretchen from on the design of their new treat pouch, the “Penny Changer”. Even before I got involved this pouch was perfection and the few alterations I did suggest, she nailed. Without going into all the aspects that elevate this pouch from the rest, I do have to share my favorite feature. The double treat pouch with the removable silicone insert. Now, not only can I separate the treats from the meat, but at the end of the day I can simply pull out the insert and throw it in the fridge. There are some dogs that just get to you. There’s a kindness about them. Even when they’re acting out you can see they don’t mean it. They’re not committed to that behavior, they just came up with it and now don’t know how to get out of it. Bentley is a great dog with a great owner who wants to learn how to make her dogs life better. There is nothing more I could ask of someone.

Genetics. Maybe I never had a choice. Maybe my style, my taste in music, choice in friends, likes, dislikes, career, even my core beliefs, are all just genetics. It definitely makes it easier to forgive those around us with different beliefs, no matter how abhorrent they may seem to you. And maybe your dog is no different. Maybe when your dog is growling at strangers, taking off after a squirrel, or guarding your couch, it’s all just their internal predispositions coming through. Giving back to the community that supports us has always been important to us. Recently I had the privilege of addressing this group of Girl Scouts and answering all their questions about dog psychology, genetics, training, and rescue. I was incredibly impressed by these young women and their thoughtful questions and commentary. If this is the future of dog ownership, we are in good hands.

A very special thank you to Outrider Dogs Rehab and Rescue for letting us use the “Dessert” litter. Socialization and learning about your environment is just as important for kids as it is for dogs and it’s safe to say this was a mutually beneficial experience for both.

Training reduces anxiety. That’s it. That’s the only reason you should need. It’s not about control, it’s not about dominance, it’s about making your dogs life the best it can be. The better the boundaries, structure, positive associations and leadership your dog has, the more they can relax knowing that they have someone who will take care of the things they don’t understand that are happening around them. Everything in behavior is interrelated. The way you handle something in one moment will effect how they respond in another. Rehabilitation is about a collection of moments, not a single moment. Your issue is not that you have a dog that pulls on leash, or steals food, or jumps on people. It is that you have a dog that is used to getting what it wants through excited assertion. The connection being, if it works here, in relation to these things of value, then it will work in relation to other things of value. You’d be surprised how many issues go away, without addressing them directly, by simply redefining your dogs relationship with getting what they want.

There are elements in all methods of dog training that have value. The key is finding what works for you and your dog.

Do not limit yourselves by subscribing to the polarization of methodologies.
Share, collaborate, and be confident enough in your beliefs to also question them. As a community of dog trainers we should spend less time attacking each other and more time helping dogs.

Hatchet loves to help his dad during training appointments, but in order for it to stay that way, it’s important that it doesn’t just become being barked at, lunged at, snapped at, and potentially negative for him all the time. Sometimes you just gotta give a little boy time to play on a truck.
