Great education for some of our Gordons that are out there doing performance sports, therapy work and service dogs work!!
Dr. Erin Perry was one of the Search and Rescue teams that was called into action during the Joplin Tornado recovery effort. Unfortunately, she learned the hard way how fast dogs can become ill due to contaminants as her dog searched a local Home Depot and almost lost her partner. Thankfully, Veterinarians were able to treat and recover her K9 partner but the realization of how little is known about correct Canine Decontamination was obvious and she has created a webinar to help resolve this issue after many years of research. This is a great education session for search and rescue dogs, police K9s, Service dogs, trialing dogs, competition dogs and even pets. Our dogs come into contact with natural toxins, chemical contaminants and general irritants all the time and this online course can help minimize short and long term damage. Check out this 90 minute course hosted by the Center for Forensic Training and Education Online by scanning the QR code or head to https://thecfte.thinkific.com/courses/decon
There is a fee for the webinar but it's well worth the knowledge you will gain.

Flyball practice. We are converting to a fenced in field. As you can see, Maverick has no where to go except down and back. We added distractions.

Maverick learning to take a ball in flyball. We started at a low incline and kept moving up. I also added a jump so he knows to start looking for the first jump from the flyball box. This is just a ramp. The jump in front teaches them to hop and turn. We teach the turn part before we add a ball.

Your Gordon Setter can participate in a variety events. In my area in Illinois, events can include park district community fun days where animal-related groups and businesses can set up an informational tent or groups of owners can exalt the virtues of their breed. All-breed shelters may sponsor walk/run fundraiser events and invite rescues and owners to talk about their breed. Today a group of Gordon Setter owners attended our regional annual Highland Games sporting event organized by the Chicago Scots benevolent organization. We participated in their Dogs of Scotland exhibit which we have attended almost every year for the past 10 years. These events are a great opportunity for families to learn about our breed. They could be the adopters or the puppy-buyers of the future with the helpful information you provide. Think "outside the box" about how you can tell people about life with a Gordon Setter!

Here is a video of an AKC Scent Work Exterior Excellent fail! As you can see, the trial goes on in most conditions and I wasn't prepared as well as I could have been. My treats were in my pocket and it took too long to deliver them when Skye alerted. Also, the leash I was using was made of biothane and it was very slippery! She finds two of the three hides with no issue. You can't see why she failed on the video, but it was a breakfast sandwich wrapper inside of a plastic tacklebox. This is like kryptonite to a Gordon Setter! I know now what we need to practice on.

How about this new performance sport for your Gordon Setter!!

We are pleased to announce the newest addition to the AKC Family Dog lineup – AKC Fetch.
In AKC Fetch, dogs and their handlers have fun, get exercise, and they can earn four levels of AKC titles by demonstrating retrieving skills.
AKC Fetch is designed for all breeds.
Dogs who are at least six months of age are eligible to take the AKC Fetch test as long as they are registered or enrolled with AKC and have an AKC, PAL, or AKC Canine Partners number.
AKC Fetch is a pass-fail noncompetitive test. The four levels of titles (Novice [FTN] Intermediate [FTI], Advanced [FTA], and Retriever [FTR]) assess the ability of the dog to retrieve a ball or bumper. Toys may be used in the Novice and Intermediate levels. For each of the four titles, the dog must pass the test twice under two different approved AKC Fetch judges.
CGC Evaluators or AKC judges of any type may be judges for AKC Fetch if they have completed the Fetch training in Canine College. To become a Fetch judge, go to Canine College here.
AKC Fetch tests may be hosted by AKC licensed or member clubs or AKC Approved (current) Canine Good Citizen Evaluators who are approved as Fetch judges.
For a club or Fetch judge to hold a test, they must fill out an Event Application.
• There is an event application fee of $35.
• The application must be submitted one month in advance.
• AKC Fetch tests will be listed on the AKC Events Calendar here.
When dog owners are asked about activities they like to do with their dogs, the most common responses are to take their dog for a walk and to play ball (fetch) with the dog. Get on the ball and plan your Fetch tests soon! For information about the new AKC Fetch program, click here.
