The Berkeley Animal Care Services shelter is responsible for the community's animals in need. We are the volunteers of Berkeley Animal Care Services.

If you are interested in adopting one of the animals featured on this page, please visit or call BACS directly. As we are only volunteers and not employees of the shelter, we may not have the most current information available, although we do try and keep this page as updated as possible. Information regarding adoption fees, criteria and special programs is provided as a courtesy for prospective a

dopters. It is set by the City of Berkeley and Berkeley Animal Care Services, not the volunteers who maintain this page.

Adoption Fees:
Dogs $125.00 / Cats $100 -- include shots, microchip, spay or neuter
Rabbits, BIrds, Exotics: $25
Rodents: $10

60/6/60 Adoption Program, Partnering Senior Animals with Senior Friends -- If you are 60 or older and adopt an animal who is 6 or older, you'll get 60% off the adoption fee! Adoption Criteria:
In order to qualify as an adopter, you must bring proof of home ownership or your rental contract showing you are allowed to have pets before the adoption can be completed. If you're coming to adopt a new family or household pet, please bring your family members or other members of the household with you to the shelter -- including any other dogs in the family. We want to make sure your new dog is a good fit for both 2-leggers and 4-leggers alike.

Here is Valentine’s Day love story from exactly a year ago today! Here is what Blondie’s mom Tatiana had to say:

“Blondie was our Valentine last year. We went and saw him a few times before that and decided on Feb 14 to just bring him home. As our family grew to 3, little did we know a new family would be coming at the end of the year. Now we are a family of 4, and Blondie has been so good with all the transitions. We remember when we picked him up, he barely knew how to jump in the car and was all nervous. Now he loves hiking, playing with his friends, cuddling up with his humans. He has always been a rambunctious dog, who always wants to give a lot of love, sometimes too much 😆 He is a great brother to his two sisters. He has been a great addition to our family and very grateful we picked him that day.”

Little Miss Piggy and Bear went home!!! Miss Piggy was here with her litter mates and mother, so it'll be nice she is going home with a more seasoned dog sibling who can she her the ropes. And Bear, now named Chacho, will have plenty of fun in his new home!! Thank you for adopting and braving the rain to find your new love!

What's that you ask? What day is it? Why, it's , and we have a delightful pup-date for you from Nori!

"Nori celebrated her 1st Gotcha day this past week. It's hard to believe a year has passed since she came into our lives! It's been a very exciting and crazy year with Nori as we learned and adjusted to her and Nori adjusting to her new life.

She is the center of our family now. She has always been good with my grandchildren and loves everyone. As BACA predicted she is totally good with being dressed up and my granddaughter loves dressing her up.

She is reactive to other animals and we have been working with trainers. We are aware she will probably never be a dog who we can take to a caffe but we will continue to work on modifying her behaviors. I personally rediscovered the fun of training a dog.

Thank you for allowing us to adopt her from BACS. I appreciate all you do for those precious lives.

Recently adopted Jackie, now Espresso, is settling in nicely to her new home! Her mom had this to say:

“She got really comfortable really quick, only took her a day to really open up and be silly. She’s in love with watching movies. She loves her water fountain and her cat tree. Thank you so much for helping me find her, I love her so much. She’s brought so much joy to my life.”

Evie (fka "Leva") Update!!

We love hearing updates about BACS alumni and how they're thriving in their new homes! Leva found her forever family last week, and her new parents just shared an exciting update about her first week at home: Hi BACS, This is Debbie and Ralph. 1 week ago today we came into the shelter and adopted little Leva. We just love her so much and she has fit into our family so well. She’s got plenty of energy- never a dull moment for the other dogs. She loves being outside. Even when the other dogs are sleeping in the garage, she’ll be out on the deck in the sun, laying in the dirt, or down the hill sitting in the leaves! It’s super cute. We wanted to thank everyone there for investing so much time and love into Leva. She is so gentle taking snacks, not food obsessed, potty trained, and is a good listener- and loves sleeping out in the sun on our deck. Both Ralph and I look at her and can’t believe she was there for so long- which shows what great care you all gave her. We realized when we got home that Leva sounds a lot like “leave it”- which is one of the commands we use with our dogs to leave something alone- so we shortened her name to Evie. She responded right away- so we felt good about the nickname. A special thanks to Nicki who was so patient with us and Wes our dog when we came into visit. Thank you all again!
