- The Off Command

If there’s one thing most hyperactive dogs need to learn, it’s the “off” command. When initially practising this command make sure your dog has had plenty of exercise and stimulation, so is more likely to be a bit calmer and therefore more likely to succeed. We always want our dogs to succeed especially when we’re first teaching a command!

DOG JUMPING ON YOU
As your dog rushes up to jump on you, put your hand out flat in front of you and say “OFF!” in a firm tone. If it stops and keeps all four paws on the ground, click and reward it. If it continues to jump, say “NO” and turn your back. Whenever all four paws return to the ground, turn back to face your dog and click and reward. Throw the treat on the ground rather than giving it from your hand to discourage your dog from jumping to get it.

Then every time your dog approaches you, ask for a “sit” and when it does, click and reward with a treat and praise. If your dog is sitting, you can give it the treat directly from your hand.

Continue doing this until your dog is keeping its paws on the ground consistently - it can help to leave treats and clicker in pouch by the front door ready for when you arrive home.

If your dog does get his paws up on you, say “Off” again and push your dog back down to the ground, then click and reward as soon as your dog’s paws are all on the ground again.

DOG JUMPING ON OTHERS
If your dog is rushing to jump on someone else, put your dog on a lead attached to a nylon slip collar (this helps to discourage lunging or pulling). When you hear the door, ask your dog to sit and click and reward it with a treat when it does. Continue to click and reward as the guest enters the house and your dog remains sitting or standing on all four paws. If your dog tries to jump, say “off” in a firm tone of voice, and if it keeps doing it give a snappy effective check (short sharp tug on the lead) while saying “NO”, then ask your dog for a sit again and reward it.

Ask guests to engage with your dog only when it’s calm and sitting nicely - then they can pat it and give it a treat. Invite lots of people over so you have opportunities to practise!

DOG JUMPING ON FURNITURE
If your pup jumps on the couch while you are sitting on it, say "Off" in a firm tone of voice and push her off. Click and reward when she's on the ground again. Ask her for a sit and a Zen Down, click and reward when she obeys and continue to click and reward her if she stays in a sit or Zen Down position on the ground beside the couch. Repeat if she tries to jump up again.

- Treating hyperactivity

In my next few posts I’ll address how to work through specific behaviour issues such as lead pulling and jumping up, but for this post I’ll just go through a few general recommendations for training when working with a hyperactive dog.

EXERCISE AND STIMULATION
Make sure your dog is getting an appropriate level of exercise, play and mental stimulation. As a general rule, most dogs will need at least 30 - 60 minutes of exercise and play per day, while high energy dogs will need this twice a day. Your dog should have slowed down and be content to relax once you’ve returned home after some exercise. Try giving your dog a combo of aerobic exercise and exercise that is both mentally and physically stimulating: chasing a ball, exploring a walking trail with new scents, engaging in a game, agility work etc. Training sessions with a clicker are also good mental stimulation. I find swimming great for high energy dogs as it’s easy on joints but very tiring!

PLAY VS HYPERACTIVITY
There’s a fine line between excitable play and hyperactivity, watch that you don’t cross that line. You need to be in control of any play activity and be able to turn it off when you want to. If you can’t, you have crossed over to hyperactivity and will be rewarding the wrong behaviours. If you want to play with your hyperactive dog, make sure it is a clearly defined activity, so give the beginning and end a clear signal and have a dedicated toy that denotes that this is play. Also have a ready supply of toys to leave with your dog for entertainment when you’re not home (a Kong toy stuffed with food works well!).

ZEN DOWN
The Zen Down position relaxes the dorsal muscles (the ones down the middle of your dog’s back) and activates the vagal nervous system, which enhances learning and induces a state of calm in your dog. So teach the Zen Down command and practise it as often as possible using a clicker and food rewards. Extend the amount of time you wait before clicking then giving a food reward when your dog is in the Zen Down, so that you gradually extend the amount of time he stays in this calming position.

CLIP STATION
A clip station is a short lead clipped to the wall (or tied around a very heavy piece of furniture) with a mat or bed beside it. We use it to help re-create the concept of a den (like we do with a crate), it’s a safe, controlled, quiet space. I like to have a few clip stations set up around my house in the main social areas, then I can put a dog on the clip station to spend time with the family but in a calm, controlled way. Clip stations sound simple but they are an incredible tool and should be used often when training a hyperactive dog for some time out. But keep in mind that your dog will need to be trained onto the clip station in the right way so that they accept it, then come to love it as a safe space. Once well established, you'll likely find your dog goes and lies on the clip station mat even when not clipped up!

LEARNING STATE
This is the calm, focused state that your dog must be in to learn. I did a series on Learning State in November so scroll back through my page to find that set of content and learn about what a learning state is, how to recognise it and how to put your dog in it. This will make a HUGE difference to the success of your training sessions.

In my next post, I’ll teach you how to do one of my signature techniques - Joining Up - which is highly useful for hyperactive dogs (as well as all others!).

- Rewarding hyperactivity

We often accidentally reward and encourage hyperactive behaviours.

Some ways we do this are:
+ by talking to or handling your dog when it behaves hyperactively e.g by lavishing your dog with attention when you arrive home at the end of the day, even if she’s jumping up on you
+ by over-stimulating your dog when you come home, with your own excitement at seeing her
+ by giving your dog the outcome she desires when she’s acting hyperactively e.g. by letting her outside when she’s jumping up at the door or letting her push through a door before you, or letting her off-lead when she’s pulling on the lead
+ by turning hyperactive tendencies into a game. If you want to play with your hyperactive dog, make sure it is a clearly defined activity, so give the beginning and end a clear signal and have a dedicated toy that denotes that this is play

When your dog is hyperactive, they are trying to solicit a reward from you - whether that be some of your attention, hearing your voice, feeling your touch, getting a treat or being let off a lead. We want to shape and reward calm, loving behaviours but not excessively high-energy hyperactive ones.

So well explained, particularly with relation to Husky behaviours and our breeding program where our dogs get to live and socialize as a pack rather than a puppy mill situation (caged living). Our dogs get fed, hunt, play, socialize and have supportive whelping amongst each other with enforced hierarchy.
Understanding dog behavior is the key to training successfully of the why's and how's.
