February 2018 Biodynamic Compost
We spent a day making this biodynamic compost pile not long ago - here's the video of the end result. This is a hot compost method, with thin layers packed down to stay compact. The biodynamic preparations are added at the end, and so the pile should really be built all in one go.
Here at Katrina's Kitchen Garden, we need many of these on the go, to develop the soil we want to grow our crops. Each month, we'll do one in the descending phase of the moon, and if you'd like us to come and host a compost building workshop in your garden, just get in touch, we'd love to share this practice with gardeners everywhere!
Next descending moon is: March 12-24, 2018.
We'll be building a pile on Friday March 16th, and extra help is always welcome.

Worm Farm with Vertical Hugelkultr experiment
Here's my latest gardening experiment - it's a worm tower in a container garden, but with the added bonus of vertical hugelkultr. We'd love to test this set-up in an indoor setting, or see pictures of how other people have tried this combination.
Please share your ideas, suggestions, and adaptations.

KKG Chicken
Our chickens love getting food scraps. We've registered with ShareWaste, and encourage other chicken owners to do likewise. Then, anyone anywhere can find chooks to give their food scraps to.
Together we can stop organic waste going into landfill.

The moon is entering a descending phase soon, and from January 17-29 our focus at Katrina's Kitchen Garden is on where we can stir 500, and where we can complete a compost pile.
Want to be part of this? Please either let us know if you'd like:
- some BD500 for your garden.
- to come and stir with us.
- to have us come and stir in your garden and spread it for you.
- to have a compost pile made on your property.
Happy composting!

The experiment begins this week - does biodynamic compost grow better vegetables?
Hoping my bias won’t show too much, as we want all our vegetable boxes to be scrumptious...
Compost making workshops coming soon: watch this space for dates.

Today was about replenishing the worm farm, and we brought back a nice big load kof worm castings for making our own seed raising mix tomorrow.
Great work by the team!
One of the many new things learned today on the school holiday programme.

Steve here building the urbam farm, with a new compost bay pallet system. This is hands on urban farm training, we'd love to share this knowledge with more families.
Steve and I made this pallet compost system a few months ago, and I am totally hooked! It's so simple, but you can keep your compost nicely layered, most of it 'cooking', and develop a rotating method so there's always something to use.
Want some help building one? Get in touch, we'd love to support you.
So today Steve, Connor & I got to work transplanting trays of seedlings.
This kind of teamwork makes our goal of 30 vegetable boxes by autumn more achievable.

Steve’s awesome little edible courtyard garden, now producing more food than weeds.
He’s ready to share his skills with the youth of West Auckland.

Thanks to Kiwi Valley Farm for the awesome compost!!
Great work here from from Connor and Steve. Keeping all our garden beds well netted, so the pukekos stay out of the vegetable patch.
Let us know if you need help with netting parts of your garden, we are happy to install setups like this for you.
Happy gardening!
Beautiful weather today at the Oratia Farmers Market, the trees are blossoming, no sign of rain (or hail!), and it seems spring has finally arrived.
We have loads of microgreens, worm tea for your garden, freshly cut herb boxes, and are always happy to offer our foodscaping services for your garden.
