After a looooong month, Missy is home!! Missy slipped out of her yard without anyone seeing her. She's elderly, vision impaired, hearing impaired, and has a chronic cough. She couldn't have gone far, right? The family searched everywhere, and Missy was no where to be found. Signs went up quickly -- in the neighborhood, on the main road, and to all of the stores in the vicinity, but nothing. They contacted us for help. Melissa and Laura both have tracking/trailing dogs now, but are "kindergarteners" (well, maybe middle schoolers) when it comes to working with the dogs. There's a lot to learn about reading their behaviors, knowing when they are on the scent and when they are not, so we are not yet "open for business". But, we need practice. We happened to be going within 10 minutes of where Missy lives for another reason, so we took the dogs with us. Both dogs picked up her scent and ended on the porch of the same house. Our conclusion? Either she was in the house (which we doubted) or someone picked her up and carried her off. Well, it turns out that a 17-year-old young lady from Maryland was in the area and saw Missy walking along the road and picked her up and took her home with her to Maryland! Although she took good care of her, she didn't know that, by law, you MUST report a found animal to the animal shelter in the county in which you found it. Luckily, a friend of hers was in the area yesterday, and happened to see the lost dog signs, and took a picture of one and sent it to her. She immediately contacted the owner and brought her back home to Virginia. Welcome home, Missy!!! (People, PLEASE talk to you kids, siblings, parents, friends about doing the right thing if they find and animal and report is as "found" in the county in which they found it!!)

Real talk …… people seem to think that they can 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 a scared dog ….. So … 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗿𝘂𝗻 𝟭𝟵 𝗠𝗣𝗛?

That is the 𝗔𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗔𝗚𝗘 speed for dogs. More importantly, can you 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗱 over 𝘀𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘀? 𝗗𝗢𝗚𝗦 𝗖𝗔𝗡‼️

Consider these 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀:

🐾 Greyhounds: 40-45 mph

🐾 Jack Russell Terriers: 38 mph

🐾 Poodles: 30 mph

🐾 Slowest Dogs: 5-10 mph

💥 Fastest Humans on Earth: 23 mph, sprinting

This is a reminder that you 𝗖𝗔𝗡𝗡𝗢𝗧 "catch" a scared, panicked dog that does not want to be caught!

However, you may run that dog out onto a 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘄𝗮𝘆, to be hit by a car. At the very least, you will likely chase it away from the area where people know it is staying, to a new, unknown area.

𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿, this advice given in the practice of medicine: " First, do no harm." Then, if you really want to help that panicked dog, 𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗣, 𝗗𝗥𝗢𝗣, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗔𝗞𝗘 𝗡𝗢 𝗘𝗬𝗘 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗧𝗔𝗖𝗧.

For the safety of all our lost, scared dogs, please 𝗗𝗢 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗦𝗘 a lost dog.

REUNITED!
“Well, what a wonderful way to start off July 5! Millie, a German Shepherd, got scared from the noise of fireworks on Sunday, and took off. The family searched on Monday, ordered signs and started putting them up on Tuesday early morning. They started getting sightings! (SIGNS WORK BETTER THAN ANYTHING!!!). She was 5 miles from home. Well, being the 4th of July, and fireworks going off every night (and I'm sure it will continue for at least another week), she kept moving. But, as frequently happens, she doubled back and headed towards home. This morning, there was a sighting at 4:00 a.m. about a mile past their house. The owner headed out around 6:00 (when he saw the message), and he saw her! He got out of the car, sat down, and started to cry (pretend). Well, it scared her and she ran off again. The wife called me, and I told her MY WAY of doing calming techniques (normal tone, normal volume and just talk. Recite Mary had a Little Lamb. Go over your grocery list. Use buzz words like "Mollie is a good girl". Don't look at her! Then, she had to hang up because she saw Millie! She did exactly what I told her, and within a minute or two recognition hit, and Mollie was safe!!! Great job, family!!”
