Hear what our clients have to say about their training experience👇

"I’ve owned and trained dogs for many years but training with Jean was my first, 100% positive, reward based experience and there’s no turning back. I recently moved into the area and I’m so glad I found Jean. I had her come to the house for a consult three days after my Berner pup came home and I’m so glad I did.

Together we’ve done two sets of classes and not only is my pup thriving from what I’ve learned and am training, but Jean is wonderful to work with, professional, patient, understanding, and flexible. I highly recommend!!"

Did you know that dogs are incredible at sensing our energy? When we train, our attitude matters because a happy dog is a learning dog!

✨ Our emotions reinforce the behaviors you’re working on with your dog, which is why training should be fun and light-hearted! This positive energy encourages them to repeat those behaviors, strengthening your bond and making learning more effective. And in the long run, you’ll see more of the desired behaviors you’re training in the real world!

🐶 Duke’s Progress: From Reactive to Relaxed 🌟

I’m thrilled to share an update from Duke’s mom! After working with Duke in the Wonder Dog Day Training Program, they’ve both made incredible strides. Duke, once reactive and anxious around other dogs, now shows confidence during their walks.

Duke’s mom recently shared this heartwarming news:

“Hi Jean, Hope all is well! I wanted to share some pics of Duke at the vet today. While he's still a nervous boy, he took treats for the first time and quickly realized that sitting calmly was the way to get them. He also hopped on the scale and followed my guidance to stay calm between me and the check-out desk. Thank you for helping us get here!”

Check out the photos in the photography section to see Duke’s progress!

What Most Dog Owners Think Loose Leash Walking Is… vs. What It Actually Is 🐾

Many believe loose leash walking is just about their dog’s training skills. In reality, it’s about what we, as handlers, can do to help our dogs navigate these walks successfully. Here’s how we can make loose leash walking work:

✨ Be Aware of the Environment: Our awareness of surroundings helps us manage our dog’s focus and reactions. It’s not just about the dog—our attention plays a big role!

🌟 Avoid Leash Tension: Keeping the leash slack is crucial. When we maintain a loose leash, our dog can walk comfortably and stay engaged.

🧘‍♂️ Stay Calm: Our dogs pick up on our stress. By remaining calm and relaxed, we help our dogs stay calm and attentive.

🚶‍♂️ Respect Their Threshold: Understand and respect our dog’s limits. Avoid pushing them beyond their ability to stay focused, especially with distractions.

👁️ Encourage Focus on Us: A successful loose leash walk means guiding our dogs to stay engaged with us, even amidst distractions.

By incorporating these practices, we can create a positive and enjoyable walking experience for both ends of the leash. Are you ready to find enjoyable walks with your "big feelings" dog.

Ready to make playtime more engaging? 🎉 Grab a dedicated tug toy and follow these simple rules for a fun, safe tug game with your dog:

1️⃣ Use a special tug toy just for playtime.
2️⃣ Put the toy away when you’re done.
3️⃣ Ask for a behavior like 'sit' or 'down' before giving the toy.
4️⃣ Play tug side to side, not up and down to keep their neck safe.
5️⃣ Teach your dog to drop the toy when asked.
6️⃣ Remember: teeth on skin means game over!

And don’t forget Hudson Valley Dog Parents—sometimes it’s okay to let your dog win!
