Here is Hunter (named after Dr Lisa as she successfully trapped him!) He was found outside Midtown Plaza on the morning of H Beryl, scared and lost. KV took him and his buddy in out of the storm (aptly named Beryl). He has since been neutered, microchipped and vaccinated and now ready for a new adventure… a loving home. He is a shy little guy but increadibly sweet natured. Please come and meet him 😻

Preparing for the Vet TIP 1

Socialise your Puppy 😊

The most common reason that dogs may be fearful of vet visits is because they are shy and uncomfortable around new people and places. Your dog may react with fear or even aggressive behaviour when put in a situation that is foreign to him. Even if your dog doesn’t behave this way at home, you may be surprised at how much his behaviour changes when he is in a stressful situation.

This is one of the reasons that it is so important to SOCIALISE your dog from an early age. Meeting new people, visiting lots of different places and being in various situations will help your dog to be less fearful and be more relaxed in new situations, including vet visits. You could even visit your local vet clinic in a social manner with your puppy and make it a calm and enjoyable experience with lots of positive reinforcement and treats. This is a win-win for both you and your dog as vet visits will be far less stressful and may even be an exciting outing for your pup!

First Things First: Understanding Why Your Dog Doesn’t like the Vet

A trip to the vet for your dog is the equivalent of you paying a trip to the dentist – unpleasant but necessary. The huge difference is that you are aware of the importance, whereas your dog is not. All that your dog knows is that he’ll be in a strange place with unfamiliar humans and smells, being poked, prodded and pricked for no good reason. Our pets are not human and so it is really important to understand that they do not experience things as we do 🧡

It is important to understand that even if your dog is sick or in pain, he does not recognize the value in seeing a doctor, regardless of whether it helps him to feel better in the end. Your pet may fight tooth and nail to escape a vet visit but we’ll be posting a few helpful tips in the next few days to make these important and unavoidable visits a lot less stressful and even a relaxed and pleasant time for you and your furry family member.
